Search for a Hemagglutinin Derived from Seaweed and Its Mitogenic Activity
Carbohydrate is now recognized as one of the most important informational transmitters after the three major informational macromolecules (DNA, RNA, and proteins). Hemagglutinins are the focus of research aimed at developing new
industrial tools (detection, staining and separating agents), medicines, and health food products of using their specific carbohydrate binding abilities. It was first discovered in 1966 that marine algae also contain hemagglutinins. In the last 50
years, the discovery of biologically active metabolites derived from marine algae, including seaweed hemagglutinin, has
increased significantly. However, despite extensive research efforts by academic and corporate institutions, industrial raw
materials derived from marine algae are considerably less abundant than industrial raw materials derived from land
plants. The discovery of new biologically active substances from marine algae and the establishment of their extraction
and fractionation techniques should contribute to the development of the seaweed industry. Therefore, fifteen species of
edible seaweeds were surveyed for hemagglutinins. Rabbit erythrocytes were used as standard erythrocytes. The efficiency of five fractionation methods were compared in order to selects a suitable extraction procedure for the screening.
The following five methods were tested: ethanol fractionation method 1 (ethanol 20% - 83% ), ethanol fractionation method 2 (ethanol 50% - 83% ), ammonium sulfate fractionation method 1 after buffer extraction (ammonium sulfate 20% saturation – 75% saturation), ammonium sulfate fractionation method 2 after buffer extraction (ammonium sulfate 35% saturation – 70% saturation), ethanol precipitation method after buffer extraction (ethanol 50% ). Marine algal fractions with
high specific activity (specific activity over 100 units/mg) were obtained from Ulva lactuca, Gelidium elegans, Gracilariopsis chorda and Gracilaria vermiculophylla.Among the marine algal fractionations investigated, a Gracilariopsis chorda fraction obtained by the fractionation method 4 had the highest specific activity. The Gracilariopsis chorda fraction stimulated
mitogenesis in human peripheral blood lymphocytes, and suppressed the degree of decline in the cellular immune capacity of human lymphocytes due to long-term (16 hours) UV irradiation. These properties may be useful when applying the
marine algal hemagglutinin as an industrial material.departmental bulletin pape

The Transformation and Background of National Recreation Conventions from the Post-high Economic Growth Period to the Bubble Economy
This study examines the transformation and background of national recreation conventions during the period in question by analyzing changes in major themes and events from 1974 to 1993. The term hometown was the most frequently used in the main theme of conventions during this period. Moreover, the terms region and local were most frequently used in the names of sections and agendas. In terms of events at each convention, Japanese folk dance was performed at each convention and was regarded as one of the representative events of the period. Recreational and ballroom dances were also presented, and camping and indiaca were added to other events. The reasons for these changes were the encouragement of the president and experts of the association at the time, the influence of localism and the Sports for All movement, and the desire of various ministries to promote outdoor activities by bridging educational and leisure policies. In contrast to the focus on labor issues during the period of rapid economic growth, the contents of national recreation conventions during this period were altered to promote regional and local recreation. Furthermore, the activities were diversified by incorporating new activities as encouraged by experts and related ministries such as the Ministry of Education.departmental bulletin pape
