Local SDGs for the Future: Implications from Bottom-Up Practices in Ishigaki Island
The year 2023 marks the turning point for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which set 2030 as the deadline for achieving the goals. However, achieving these goals requires confronting a significant crisis in a world grappling with the COVID-19 pandemic, armed conflicts, and the climate crisis. This paper will discuss the importance of bottom-up practices in achieving the SDGs in these times of crisis. While we accept that the global situation in relation to the SDGs is challenging, we believe that concrete practices in education and local communities are essential to make positive changes toward these goals. Therefore, we will present a case study of local initiatives on Ishigaki Island, Okinawa Prefecture, as part of a joint research project to explore the challenges of education for sustainable development. Ishigaki Island’s practice differs slightly from conventional approaches, as it relies not on a local government-led SDG initiative but rather on the activities of local residents, which may not necessarily align with the SDGs. This paper will detail how key individuals who relocated to Ishigaki Island “discovered” activities that locals deemed “interesting” and “important” and visualized them using the “SDGs” tool.departmental bulletin pape
