The fate conjugally transferred R64-11 plasmid DNA in the recipient cell of E. Coli K12, 1981

Transfer replication of the R64-11 plasmid DNA was examined in recipient cells of coli K12 during interrupted mating experiments. A system was employed to specifically label plasmid DNA during conjugation in order to study the incorporation of radioactive label in the recipient cell. Replication in the recipient cell was monitored by utilizing a recipient cell inactivated for repair replication of thymine dimers produced following exposure to ultraviolet radiation. The results indicate, upon initiation of the conjugal process, that newly replicated forms of the R64-11 plasmid DNA in the recipient cell is associated with the chromosomal complex (membrane and chromosome). Recircularization occurs in non-UV treated cells 30 min following initiation of the conjugal process

A dysfunctional planning and research unit, Department of Public Safety, city of Atlanta: its causes and effects, 1979

The primary intent of this thesis is to analyze to what degree the Planning and Research Unit, Department of Public Safety is operating in a dysfunctional manner. In particular, the problem of the Planning and Research Unit's inability to successfully complete many of its projects and assignments will be the main focus of this study. The inability of the Planning and Research Unit to success-fully complete many of its projects and assignments is significant for many reasons: the problem has placed the Commissioner of Public Safety in a position of not being able to rely on the caliber of information generated by the Planning and Research Unit; many activities of the agency are delayed because information upon which to base decisions is not forthcoming; timetables cannot be followed because information is not forthcoming ; and the criminal justice system is unable to realize growth and future development because the Planning and Research Unit is a nonfunctional entity. The main sources of information were interviews with Joan Botts, Supervisor of the Planning and Research Unit, Lee P. Brown, Commissioner of Public Safety, City of Atlanta, representatives of the Bureaus of Fire, Corrections, Police Services, and Civil Defense and a survey, that was administered to all professional staff persons of the Planning and Research Unit. Also a wide variety of secondary information, books, periodicals and unpublished materials was used

The purpose of this study was to determine and compare perceptions of the ideal and actual roles of resource teachers held by elementary school administrators and resource teachers. The population sample consisted of 46 elementary school administrators and 19 resource teachers employed by the Atlanta Public Schools. A 47-item questionnaire requiring respondents to rate items on a 5-point scale was distributed, collected, and analyzed using t: tests and analysis of variance to compare mean scores. Of the seven major findings, three were statistically significant and four were not. The three statistically significant findings were that administrators had different perceptions of ideal and actual roles of resource teachers, resource teachers had different perceptions of their ideal and actual roles, and both groups had different perceptions of the actual and ideal roles in specific job tasks. Of the four findings that were not statistically significant, the first was that administrators and resource teachers did not differ in their perceptions of the roles of resource teachers. The second was the lack of perceptual differences based on gender. The third was the lack of differences in perceptions of the roles of resource teachers based on the educational background of respondents. The fourth was the lack of perceptual differences based on experiential levels. The data confirmed that differences between ideal and actual roles of resource teachers as perceived by administrators and resource teachers do exist and are significant. However, these perceptual differences are not influenced by gender, experiential background, or education. Further analysis of the data revealed that administrators and resource teachers had differing perceptions of the resource teachers' role regarding classroom supervision, curriculum development, and personnel evaluation

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between family support and the self-esteem of gay African American males living in the Atlanta area. Survey research was conducted at AID Atlanta, a community AIDS service organization that provides numerous services for persons living with HIV/AIDS. The study surveyed fifty African American males from under the age of twenty to over the age of fifty, who identified themselves as gay and HIV positive. Twenty-eight percent of the respondents identified themselves as college graduates while twenty percent identified their education level as less than high school. The dependent variables were cross-tabulated with the independent variables to determine if a significant statistical relationship existed. It was determined that the higher the income, the higher the self-esteem and the lower the family support. In conclusion, the results revealed there was no significant statistical relationship between family support and self-esteem of gay African American males living with HIV/AIDS in the Atlanta area
