A descriptive case study to identify the impactful instructional strategies that support arabic students between six to twelve year olds in becoming proficient in the development of oral and written Arabic language, 2018

There are many Arab families who come every year to the United States either to study or to work. Most of these families have school-age children who were born in the United States or in their native countries. Accordingly, most of them have plans to go back to their countries, and a few are staying in the U.S. The absence of communicating in the Arabic language might cause a big problem to their children upon returning to their native country. This mixed-methods study focused on the impactful instructional strategies that support Arabic students between six to twelve years old in becoming proficient in the development of oral and written Arabic language. The central research question was, what were the instructional strategies that helped Arabic students become proficient in the written and oral Arabic language when they have limited Arabic language skills? The research concluded that Arab children will not reach the Arabic proficiency without collaboration among teachers, administrators and the most important key element of parental engagement. Mass balance change at Engabreen

The purpose of this research is to identify trends in ablation and accumulation in Engabreen, a glacier in the Svartisen Ice cap in Norway. While glaciers worldwide are retreating at an alarming rate, some glaciers are advancing. This research looks at what factors have contributed to Engabreen having a positive mass balance most years since 1970. Looking at data compiled from 1970-2005 it is clear that while the glacier Engabreen is indeed still advancing, the rate of accumulation is decreasing with each year and shall eventually cease to advance. Data has been collected on overall mass balance, annual and seasonal precipitation, and summer temperature. The data collected has shown that precipitation over Engabreen has increased overtime and that the mass balance of Engabreen has gotten less positive over the past 40 years. Though Engabreen is growing, as temperatures continue to rise they will cause an increasing amount of ablation. Although Engabreen is likely to see more precipitation in the coming years, increased temperatures will likely cause more ablation than accumulation and Engabreen will retreat like many glaciers around the world

The extent and impact of direct private foreign investment in Africa: the case of Nigeria, 1987

There has been concern on the part of Nigerians, in particular, and Africans, in general, as to who is controlling the economic activities in Nigeria and Africa. This concern has caused some governments in Africa to initiate laws and regulations that tilt toward the encouragement of Africans to invest or buy shares in areas that are known to be controlled by foreign investors. This study examines the extent and the impact of direct private foreign investment in Nigeria. Data obtained on Nigeria and other African countries were employed. The result suggests that there is foreign investment in the major economic activities in Nigeria and that the inflow foreign investment has not helped the economic development of Nigeria

A descriptive study of substance abuse by parents who abuse and neglect their children, 1991

The overall objective of this study was to present characteristics of parents with substance abuse problems and how these relate to child abuse and neglect. To attain this objective, the literature addressed the following areas: a) parent-child communication, b) family break up c) more coordination between professionals d) relapse, e) permanency planning and f) parental failure. The study's survey of parents focused upon: a.) Demographics b.) Use of substance and frequency of relapse c.) Childrearing practices and d.) parents beliefs about the understanding of their case welfare caseworkers and substance abuse counselors. A survey was administered to parents who were clients of a child welfare agency in the Atlanta metropolitan area. The study was an attempt to provide a clearer understanding of families who are confronted with the dual problems of substance abuse and child abuse and neglect

A process evaluation of the recovery process among Fulton County family drug court program participants, 2005

This study evaluates the Fulton County Juvenile Court's Family Drug Court Program (FDC). The program was established under an initiative to provide substance abusing mothers a chance through recovery from the disease of chemical dependence. Specifically, this evaluation examines participants' perceptions of their recovery process and implications for maintaining sobriety. Sobriety is measured by the participating mothers' perception of the interventions and sanctions provided to them during each phase of their recovery process. A sample of adult files (N=20) were drawn from the FDC program. Demographic and other data were collected from the courts Juvenile Court Automated Tracking System (JCATS). The frequency distributions of positive and negative responses were examined. The researcher found that overall, interventions provided by the Futon County Juvenile's Family Drug Court program demonstrated a positive impact on participating mothers' ability to maintain sobriety. Symbolic Interaction theory explains the use of Social Work skills through family preservation. This theory is used to assess the efficacy of the Family Drug Court's process. The results of this study can be used to improve the services offered by the Family Drug Court team and ultimately reduce relapse rates. It is this study's intent to inform program administrators of how recovery is perceived by their clients

An analysis of Georgia's energy demand (a case study of gasoline and residential demand for electricity): a quantitative approach, 1985

This thesis analyzed Georgia's pre and post embargo consumption of gasoline and residential electricity from 1960 to 1982 to determine: 1) if the structure of gasoline demand was stable; 2) to investigate the arguments for conservation; and 3) to ascertain that the pricing mechanism is indeed able to adjust consumption to levels of supply. Elasticities were computed and they were used to address simple tax issues. The study was significant for several reasons: 1) it is the first ever known study of its kind done on Georgia; 2) Georgia has a ninety five percent dependence rate on other states and foreign countries (indirectly) for her supply of energy resources; 3) the impact of the oil embargo on consumption, prices and the economy at large is necessary both as a post moterm and for future policy decisions. The results overwhelmingly favored stability in the structure of these demands. As such, the restricted model was valid for any projections and conclusions. The short-term price and income elasticities for gasoline were .30 and .06 and the long-term coefficients were 1.5 and .20 respectively. For electricity, the short-term price and income elasticities were .22 and .37 and the long-term estimates were .81 and 1.33 respectively. The weather variables were very inelastic. All coefficients were significant by the usual criteria. With inelastic demands for these energy resources, taxation seemed a welcome proposition for controlling prices and consumption and for generating revenue. However, it is only to the extent that other monetary, fiscal and economic objectives of the government are not jeopardized. Thus, the arguments for conservation holds to a good degree. A hybrid of a comprehensive tax-pricing policy and conservation efforts is necessary for stability in the energy sector
