    Slavery in Georgia, 1850-1860, as reflected in selected newspapers and other related sources, 1977

    The primary purpose of this study is to ascertain whether an examination of newspapers account, advertisements, notices, and general items regarding slavery could shed new light on the institution in the state of Georgia. Special attention has been given to runaway notices, advertisements of slaves for hire and for sale, as well as those items dealing with more general aspects of Georgia's institution. An attempt has been made to acquaint the reader with the various laws which governed the institution of slavery in Georgia. Throughout the years 1850-1860 slavery played an important role in the life of antebellum Georgia. The state was constantly confronted with the problems of fugitive slaves. Georgia's economy was centered around the use of slave labor. The ownership of slaves afforded an individual with economic and social advantages. The main sources of information were selected newspapers which included the Albany Patriot, Columbus Enquirer, Milledgeville Federal Union, Rome Courier, and the Savannah Daily Georgian. Federal census reports, Georgia laws and city ordinances were utilized.     Microbial mats are natural heterotrophic and autotrophic communities dominated by cyanobacteria (blue-green algae). These constructed mats are durable, tolerant to a variety of toxins and resilient under changing environmental conditions. This research demonstrates that microbial mats provide an effective remediation treatment for 2,4,6 Trinitrotoluene (TNT) in water and soil. It showed that TNT is removed to undetectable limits after 5 days of treatment under any of the following conditions: light/dark; total light; total dark. This work also shows that in the presence of an inorganic material (lead), mats were able to remove both contaminants efficiently, thus making the microbial mat a good choice for mixed waste remediation. Kinetic studies performed during the first five hours of microbial treatment showed a pseudo first order reaction indicating that TNT removal is initially proportional to the concentration of TNT. The major metabolites detected after 24 hour of treatment were 4-amino-2,6- dinitrotoluene, 2-amino-4,6-dinitrotoluene, and 2,4-diamine-6-nitrotoluene. These metabolites have a toxicity level similar to TNT. However, mat extracts and growth medium concentrates taken after 24 hours treatment of TNT showed little or no toxicity. The lack of toxicity demonstrated by treated mat extracts and media concentrates suggest that these metabolites are not the final metabolic products. The chemical nature of these metabolites suggests that the chemical mechanism of biotransformation involves reduction of the nitro groups at the ortho and para position of the TNT structure. Results obtained from light and dark experiment suggest that photooxidation or photodegradation is not an important mechanism for degradation of TNT by mats. Results show that live mats likely degrade TNT via a biotransformation process. In comparison, heat killed mats show a much slower removal of TNT than live mats. TNT was the only species found in the water column and extracts of heat killed mats, which indicates that TNT is removed by a passive absorption process, but no evidence of biodegradation was observed

    Leaders Needed: Experimental Evidence from Rural Producer Organizations in Senegal

    Most decisions are taken in group contexts where one persons behavior is affected by others. We explore drivers of coordination in Rural Producer Organizations (RPOs) of groundnut farmers in Senegal. We conduct a randomized controlled trial motivated by a theoretical model, where we varied the number and type of individuals invited to a training on collective commercialization. We use this variation to identify effects on subsequent commercialization behavior of members who did not attend the training. Our results suggest that non-trained individuals are likely to sell more through the group if a sufficient number of group leaders attended the training.     "Funk is its own reward" : an analysis of selected lyrics in popular funk music of the 1970s, 2008

    This research examined popular funk music as the social and political voice of African Americans during the era of the seventies. The objective of this research was to reveal the messages found in the lyrics as they commented on the climate of the times for African Americans of that era. A content analysis method was used to study the lyrics of popular funk music. This method allowed the researcher to scrutinize the lyrics in the context of their creation. When theories on the black vernacular and its historical roles found in African-American literature and music respectively were used in tandem with content analysis, it brought to light the voice of popular funk music of the seventies. This research will be useful in terms of using popular funk music as a tool to research the history of African Americans from the seventies to the present. The research herein concludes that popular funk music lyrics espoused the sentiments of the African-American community as it utilized a culturally familiar vernacular and prose to express the evolving sociopolitical themes amid the changing conditions of the seventies era

    Establishment of CRISPR/Cas-9 Aided Knockout of the ZIC2 Gene in the African-American Prostate Cancer Cell Line E006AA-PR, 2019

    The largest U.S. cancer health disparity exists in prostate cancer, with African American men having the highest incidence and mortality rates. The present study evaluated the effects of ZIC2 and the underlying mechanisms in the E006 parental African-American cell line that produces tumors at accelerated growth rates because of the increase of ZIC2 genes in African-American males. We analyzed the experimental research that the overexpression of ZIC2 contributes to progression of prostate cancer. E006AA cells with overexpressed or suppressed ZIC2 were analyzed to determine phenotypic differences, PCR, cell proliferation and immunoblot assays. The expression levels of ZIC2 were analyzed by CRISPR-Cas9, Western blot and proliferation growth curves. We discovered using these experimental techniques to knockout ZIC2, reduced cell proliferation occurred. This research investigated the role of ZIC2 in prostate cancer progression and the effects of the loss or gain of function of ZIC2 by using CRISPR-Cas 9 genome editing technology.
