    Structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of graphene-based nanomaterials, 2013

    The binding of radical groups such as hydrogen, hydroxyl, epoxide, or fluorine to the graphene surface, forms covalent bonds and transforms the trigonal sp2 orbital to the tetragonal sp3 orbital. Such a transformation drastically modifies electronic properties, which leads to the opening of a bandgap through the removal of the bands near the Fermi level of the pristine graphene. We have investigated the structural, electronic, magnetic, and vibrational properties of functionalized graphene based on first-principles densityfunctional calculations. A twist-boat conformation is identified as the energetically most favorable nonmetallic configuration for fully oxidized graphene. The calculated Raman G-band blue shift is in very good agreement with experimental observations. A detailed analysis of fluorographene membranes indicates that there exist prominent chair and stirrup conformations, which correlate with the experimentally observed in-plane lattice expansion contrary to a contraction in graphane. The optical response of fluorographene is investigated using the GW-Bethe-Salpeter equation approach. The results are in good conformity with the experimentally observed optical gap and reveal predominant chargetransfer excitations arising from strong electron-hole interactions. The appearance of bounded excitons in the ultraviolet region can result in an excitonic Bose-Einstein condensate in fluorographene. Hydrogenated epitaxial graphene has distinctive electronic properties compared to the two-sided hydrogenated graphene. The stability of a given hydrogenation pattern is strongly influenced by the amount of sp2-hybridized bonding in the structure. A trigonal planar networked hydrogenation pattern is identified as an intrinsic ferromagnetic semiconductor, which is in good conformity with experimental observations. The electronic structure of graphite and rotational-stacked multilayer epitaxial graphene as a function of the applied electric bias is investigated using dispersion-corrected density-functional theory. The tailoring of electronic band structure correlates with the interlayer coupling tuned by the applied bias. The implications of controllable electronic structure of rotationally fault-stacked epitaxial graphene grown on the C-face of SiC for future device applications are discussed. We have also investigated the electronic properties of fully hydrogenated boron-nitride (BN) layer and zigzag-edged nanoribbons using dispersion-corrected density-functional calculations. Among various low-energy hydrogenated membranes referred to as chair, boat, twist-boat, and stirrup, the stirrup conformation is the most energetically favorable one. The zigzag-edged BN nanoribbon, prominently fabricated in experiments, possesses intrinsic half-metallicity with full hydrogenation. The half-metallicity can be tuned by applying a transverse electric bias, thereby providing a promising route for spintronics device applications

    A descriptive study of medical social workers' perceptions of HIV/AIDS, older adults and service delivery, 2001

    This study examines the HIV/AIDS knowledge, attitudes and perceptions of medical social workers that provide services to older adult populations and the effects that may impact service delivery. It was hypothesized that medical social workers believe that they lack sufficient knowledge to provide social work services to older adults with HIV/ AIDS. The study sample consists of medical social workers who work with older adult patients and residents at a southeast Atlanta hospital and nursing home. The study reported the findings of a 23-item questionnaire that measured knowledge of HIV/AIDS older adult related issues, professional preparation and attitudes regarding sexuality and older adults. A descriptive approach was used to analyze the data and report significant findings. Findings showed that social workers were knowledgeable, yet lacked knowledge in critical areas. Overall social workers believed that they were not prepared to provide effective service delivery. This research is of importance because in order to enhance the quality of life for at risk older adults, social workers need to evaluate their level of knowledge, their attitudes and become aware of any gaps in knowledge or biases that may impede effective service delivery

    An exploratory study of African-American women infected with HIV/AIDS and risky sexual behaviors, 2000

    This study examined the relationship between African American women diagnosed with HIV/AIDS and risky sexual behaviors. The aims of the study were: (1) to describe knowledge related to sexual transmission of HIV/AIDS; (2) to determine high-risk sexual behaviors; and (3) to discuss intervention needed to reduce risky sexual behaviors. The setting was Positive Impact, a non-profit agency located in Atlanta, Georgia that provides counseling to those diagnosed with HIV/AIDS. The sample consisted of 25 African American women between the ages of 18 to 50. The participants were given a 97-item questionnaire to asses demographics, knowledge about the sexual transmission of HIV/AIDS, and risky sexual behaviors. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics and the chi-square goodness-of-fit test. The findings indicated that although the participants had a high level of knowledge about the sexual transmission of HIV/AIDS, they still engaged in risky sexual behaviors. The results are valuable for clinicians because it will aid in educating individuals about risky sexual behaviors. Also, it will be useful for developing intervention programs and implementing policies that may eventually decrease risky sexual behaviors and the spread of HIV/AIDS among African American women

    In vivo and in vitro evidence for the synthesis and processing of a styrene oxide induced form of epoxide hydrolase, 1985

    In vivo and in vitro studies have been done to determine the site of biosynthesis and processing of styrene oxide (SO) induced epoxide hydrolase (EH). Adult male LongEvans rats were used to induce a form of epoxide hydrolase using styrene oxide as the inducing agent. Rats were administered 500 milligrams of SO per milliliter of corn oil intraperitoneally per day. They were sacrificed forty-eight hours post-injections and the livers were quickly removed, homogenized and fractionated on a sucrose discontinuous density gradient to obtain the microsomal fraction. Epoxide Hydrolase was synthesized in a cellfree system using a rabbit reticulocyte lysate system. EH50 was partially purified using lubrol WX detergent solubilization and ion exchange chromatography. Analysis of EHsubS0 using SDS-PAGE showed the in vivo synthesis of a microsomal form of the enzyme. Autoradiography of the in vitro synthesis product (EHsubSO) showed that the enzyme is processed on RER-niembrane bound polysomes. The results suggest that EHsubS0 is synthesized on membrane-bound polysomes and follows the regulatory processing pathway of secretory proteins and,putatively, integral membrane proteins
