Juvenile gang delinquency in the United States of America, 1991
Get PDFThis study analyzes the sociological literature pertaining to juvenile gang delinquency in the United States. Charter 1, Introduction and Definitions, includes definitions of juvenile delinquency, gangs, youth gangs, social gangs, delinquent gangs, violent gangs, and gangs in general, and closes with a discussion of juvenile gang typologies. Chapter 2, Gang Structure, addresses the history of gangs, the characteristics of gang delinquency, the prevalence of juvenile gang delinquency, and gang locations. Chapter 3, Gang Recruitment, explores the factors related to youth entrance into gangs. Chapter 4, The "Causes" of Gang Delinquency, examines the major sociological theories related to the formation of gangs (status frustration, sex and gangs, differential opportunity, lower-class culture, and group process). An investigation of suicidal tendencies of upper level adolescent African American freshman college female students, 1989
Get PDFStatement of Purpose. This study was designed to determine the extent to which suicidal symptoms were manifested by a random sample of female freshman college students. Method. The survey research technique was used. Subjects. The eighty-four subjects, volunteered from a female freshman college class. A representative sample was randomly selected from a large female freshman population. Their chronological ages ranged from 17 to 19 years of age. All subjects were native citizens of the U.S. and its territories. Their socioeconomic status ranged from lower-middle to upper-middle class. Materials. A questionnaire used in this study was developed by the writer. The content of this questionnaire was selected from research findings reported in research literature. Procedure. A copy of the questionnaire was distributed to the subjects by the researcher. The researcher gave each subject instructions for completing the questionnaire and returning it. A minimum level of 75 percent returned questionnaires was set as the decision rule. Findings. The findings from this study were correlated positively with pertinent variables throughout the literature. Conclusions. These subjects manifested no suicidal symptoms
Public policies and the juvenile justice system, with a focus on 1960-1990, 1996
Get PDFFocusing on the period 1960 - 1990, this study explored the impact of common and statutory public policies on the juvenile justice system in the United States. Critical content analysis was employed in the study. As a supplement, questionnaires were administered to selected juvenile court jurists and professionals, and other individuals concerned with juvenile affairs. Employing Richard Quinney1s social reality of crime, the researcher sought to discover the social reality of juvenile offenses. Our findings mirror those in the model. The findings reveal that: dominant elements of society define behavior and establish and manage policies; behavior is affected by structures of society; dominant elements diffuse an ideology of crime; the use of common policies resulted in unfair treatment of juveniles and led to the U. S. Supreme Court's establishment of Constitutional rights of juveniles; current policies show movement toward more punishment of juveniles
