A comparative study of chromatographic patterns of rhizomes in several varieties of cyperus esculentus, 1964
Some recent studies employing paper chromatography have demon-strated how related species of plants can be easily distinguished by the distributional pattern of their biochemical components. Employing this technique, an attempt has been made to compare biochemical dis-tributional patterns in two unnamed varieties of Cyperus ewculentus L. Tubers of these varieties have been used as part of the plant analyzed. These tubers were obtained from Ghana in West Africa and the Southern United States. The tubers were analyzed for two groups of compounds; the nin- hydrin positive compounds (amino acids and indoles) and the ultraviolet positive compounds (phenol compounds). Extracts obtained from the tubers were applied as spots on sheets of Whatman No. 1 chromato- grahic paper. Descending chromatograms were run. Both one-dimensional and two-dimensional patterns were obtained. Standard solvent systems, recommended for separating ninhydrin-positive and phenolic compounds, were employed but the proportions of the solvent system components were varied. Chromatograms were prepared by developing the ninhydrin- positive compounds in 2$% ninhydrin in acetone and by viewing the fluorescence of ultra-violet positive compounds in the presence of ammonia fumes. It was observed that while the biochemical profile of the ninhydrin positive compounds were all similar, that of the ultra-violet positive patterns indicated a similarity between the different samples of tubers from this country and a difference was also apparent in the profiles of the two varieties obtained from Ghana, The American material appeared to be the same as one of the Ghana varieties, the brown form. For the three collections of this variety analyzed, all exhibited similar profiles and similar values according to their ninhydrin-positive patterns. The other variety from Ghana, the black form exhibited a bio-chemical profile for the ultra-violet positive patterns that was different from both the American forms and the brown Ghana variety
A survey of the policies and practices of a selected group of elementary school principals as they relate to school libraries, 1965
The trustees' fiduciary responsibilities: a study of selected private historically black colleges and universities, 1988
The purpose of this study was to investigate the fiduciary responsibilities of governing boards of selected private historically black colleges and universities and, second, to determine the relationship between the fulfillment of fiduciary roles and the financial stability of the institutions. The data presented were derived from a questionnaire/opinionnaire administered to 33 chairpersons of boards of trustees, 33 college and university presidents, 33 secretaries of boards of trustees, 33 chairpersons of the boards' finance committees, and 165 other board members selected from the Directory of Historically Black Colleges and Universities in the United States who became the subjects to be used in this study. Their responses were treated as two units. To maximize cooperation, the instrument was designed to be completed in about thirty minutes or less. Respondents' names did not appear on the instrument to insure complete anonymity. Specifically, the study investigated five research questions: (1) What is the relationship between the type of board and the trustees1 fulfillment of their fiduciary responsibilities? (2) What is the relationship between the financial stability of the institutions and trustees1 fiduciary responsibilities? (3) What is the relationship between the adoption of an institutional development plan and trustees' fiduciary responsibilities? (4) What is the relationship between board members' perceptions of the president's role and trustees' fiduciary responsibilities? and (5) What is the relationship between trustees' involvement in fund-raising activities and their fiduciary responsibilities? The findings revealed that there was a relationship between the type of boards and the trustees' fulfillment of their fiduciary responsibilities and the adoption of an institutional development plan and trustees' fiduciary responsibilities. Furthermore, the study showed that most private historically black college presidents were males, and the majority of trustees were either clergy or educators. The study also showed that most of the trustees studied were 60 years or older, while most of the college presidents were between the ages of 50 and 59. Blacks constituted the majority of members of the governing boards of the institutions studied; all of the presidents were black. The majority of trustees held bachelor's degrees, while the presidents had either specialized (Ed.D., M.D., J.D., etc.) or Ph.D. degrees. The findings of the study lead to the following conclusions: 1. The acceptance of Hypothesis 1 leads to the conclusion that the type of the boards of trustees of historically black colleges is a significant determinant of the extent to which these boards fulfill financial obligations. 2. The rejection of Hypothesis 2 leads to the conclusion that there is little relationship between the fiscal stability of historically black colleges and board of trustees' fulfillment of financial obligations. 3. The acceptance of Hypothesis 3 leads to the conclusion that historically black colleges which have a structured development plan are more likely to have financially committed boards of trustees. 4. The rejection of Hypothesis 4 leads to the conclusion that the trustee board's view/opinion of the president's job responsibilities has little relationship to their fiscal commitment to the college. 5. The rejection of Hypothesis 5 leads to the conclusion that there is little relationship between trustees' fiscal commitment to historically black colleges and their involvement in fund-raising activities. The outcomes of the study are insightful and have significant implications for the composition and attitudes of boards of trustees of historically black colleges. The major implications relate to those findings which were statistically significant. Based on the research conducted, three major recommendations are made to historically black colleges: 1. Colleges which are concerned about and committed to fiscal stability should select some trustees who are in corporate occupations. 2. Colleges should encourage trustees to assist in the development of structured development plans. 3. Further research should be conducted to include public historically black colleges to provide a wider sample
Probationary freshmen success: testing a self-esteem intervention with African American students, 1990
Freshmen on academic probation may require intervention strategies to improve freshman success. The Barksdale Self-Esteem Program was used and evaluated as such an academic probation intervention method. The study examined: Self-Esteem, Life Style and Freshman Success. The sample of 24 African American freshmen on academic probation comprised the treatment and control groups. Results showed highly significant differences between pretest and posttests. Implications for African American students, self-esteem interventions, probationary freshmen, probationary students and retention are also included
Increasing managerial effectiveness through the utilization of computer technology, 1987
This study examined the utilization of computer technology by managers in two organizations. The empirical reference for this study included a cluster sample of two selected organizations in Atlanta, Georgia. Percentages and tables were used to analyze the study area. Samples consisted of a population of fifty-seven managers from a statewide human service organization and thirty-one managers from a regional utility firm. A questionnaire was distributed by mail to the two respective groups for the purpose of collecting respondent's data to the research questions. Finally, statistical package for the social sciences (SPSSx) was used to analyze the data. The major findings of this study were as follows: (1) social agency administrators use computer software for various managerial applications; (2) in selected social organizations there were principal factors such as lack of familiarity with the computer, skills, time, and limited financial resources that adversely affected the application of specific computer technology; (3) regarding information technology, few differences were found between the two distinctly different organizations
The relationship between attitudes towards violence, peer pressure and environment among adolescents, 1996
The overall objective of this descriptive research was to show that there is no statistically significant relationship between adolescents' attitudes towards violence, peer pressure and environment. The population was comprised of a total of 41 subjects, 14 - 19 years of age, from a high school located in Atlanta, Georgia. The findings of this study indicated that no correlation was found between the attitude of adolescents toward violence and the majority of the items related to the environment and peer pressure. The study only indicated a slight correlation between adolescents attitudes toward violence and the item associated with helping a friend fight. A slight correlation was found between attitudes toward violence and knowing someone who owns a gun. The theoretical approach of this study contradicts the findings in this particular study. This study failed to reject the null hypothesis. Therefore according to this study there is no statistically significant relationship between adolescents' attitudes towards violence the environment and peer pressure
Preliminary investigations of a nonlinear differential equation arising in the study of vortex generation, 1989
Vortex shedding from a plate can be modeled by a nonlinear oscillator differential equation. We investigate the general properties of a certain approximation to this differential equation. In particular, detailed consideration is given to the number of possible limit-cycles and their stability properties. The method of slowly varying amplitude and phase is used for the mathematical analysis of the problem
