Modulation of adenylate cyclase gene (cya) expression and cyclic amp production in escherichia coli k-12, 1991
In this study, adenylate cyclase regulatory mutants were isolated from HB101 and CA8300 strains. The cva gene fragment was used to transform several cva mutants, via pBR322 plasmid. From these studies, a direct correlation between the levels of intracellular cAMP, adenylate cyclase and j8-galactosidase was found. The cloned cva fragment restored the level of cAMP to above normal range within these cva mutant strains subsequent to transformation. Indole acetic acid (IAA) significantly elevated the levels of adenylate cyclase and cAMP in cell cultures. Growth studies indicated that IAA served as a modulator of cva gene expression at the transcriptional level. Gel retardation experiment suggested that IAA appeared to bind to cva gene fragment. Glucose catabolite repression studies suggested that IAA can substitute cAMP in eliciting gene expression of the lac operon
The effects of computer-assisted instruction on reading performance of middle grade learners, 1988
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of computer-assisted instruction as an adjunct to reading instruction for a select group of fifth graders during the 1987-88 school year. The experimental method was used to investigate if there was a significant difference between the post test scores of reading achievement as measured by the Iowa Test of Basic Skills where the experimental group received computer-assisted instruction and regular classroom reading instruction and the Control Group received only regular classroom reading instruction. The t-test was used to test the null hypothesis. The null hypothesis was rejected at the 0.05 level of significance. It was concluded that the use of computer-assisted instruction and regular classroom reading instruction resulted in greater gains in reading achievement as measured by the Iowa Test of Basic Skills than regular classroom reading instruction. Computer-assisted instruction is an effective delivery strategy for reinforcing reading skills. Computer-assisted instruction serves as a meaningful complement to regular classroom reading instruction. The major recommendation was that the Atlanta Public Schools should phase in computers in all the elementary schools to improve reading achievement as measured by the Iowa Test of Basic Skills
An exploratory descriptive study on the assessment awareness and compliance of the elderly African American males and females toward the diabetic treatment regimen, 1999
This exploratory descriptive study explored the relationship between the assessment, awareness, and compliance with diabetic treatment regimen of elderly African American females and males. There were thirty participants, aged 65 - 85 who were randomly selected for the study. Simple descriptive statistics, Pearson's R and T Tests were used to analyze the data, employing the SPSS Software. The instrument was a forty item questionnaire, consisting of seven (7) Demographics, six (6) Physical Self Maintenance Scale, (Assessment) eight (8) Activities of Daily Living Scale, (Awareness) and nineteen (19) Compliance and Illness Attitudes Scale making a total of forty. The findings revealed that there is no statistically significant differences between the elderly African American females and males assessment, awareness and compliance with treatment of diabetes
Use of the circulation department of the Trevor Arnett Library by Morehouse College undergraduate students September 1951 through May 1955, 1959
A study of the relationships of a selected group of high school principals with the guidance program in their schools, 1961
An analysis of attitudes towards marriage among African Americans male college students: a test of four perspectives, 2000
Marriage patterns among African Americans have changed drastically over the past three decades. The decline of marriage among African Americans currently is occurring at a rapid speed. Research on the decline in marriage among African Americans has focused mostly on economic factors. This study assessed the association between parental education, religiosity, and perception of mate availability have on perceptions of marriage among African American male college students. Four theoretical perspectives were used for analysis and interpretation of results. The results indicated that various socio-economic factors must be included in the discussion of marriage among African American men
Implementing uncertainty management in fuzzy relational databases, 1995
This thesis describes various mathematical models used to represent uncertain information in relational databases. It is motivated by the increasing number of applications requiring approximate query matching. A fuzzy query requires data retrieval of this type. An application using similarity relations to represent information useful in establishing an export policy with the United States is implemented using a similarity based model in dBASE 5 for Windows
An exploratory study to determine the impact of religiosity and academic commitment on juvenile delinquency among African American adolescents, 1995
The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of religiosity and academic commitment on juvenile delinquency. The sample for this study consisted of fifty-nine eighth-grade students from Turner Middle School in Atlanta, Georgia. They resided in Fulton County and DeKalb County of Georgia. A three page questionnaire, consisting of forty questions was administered by two social work interns, to all students in attendance in the selected classrooms. The results were analyzed utilizing frequency distributions, means, standard deviation and Pearson's r Correlation Coefficient. The findings indicate that there is a moderately strong, negative and statistically significant relationship between religiosity and juvenile delinquency. The findings further indicate that there is a moderately strong, negative and statistically significant relationship between and academic commitment and juvenile delinquency
