The Political Career of Joseph Merriwether Terrell 1884-1912, 1977
Joseph Merriwether Terrell served as governor of Georgia from 1902-07. The purpose of this thesis is to give a general account of Governor Terrell's political career from his election to the Georgia House of Representatives to his appointment to the United States Senate. The writer has examined numerous primary sources including the state Journal of the House of Representatives, Journal of the Senate, Prison Commission Reports, Attorney General Reports, newspapers and other sources. Georgia has had many important governors in its history, some who pushed the state forward have not been given their just recognition. Consequently, this study attempts to shed some light on the forgotten Governor Joseph M. Terrell who left an imprint on the history of Georgia during his administrations
Measuring the impact of hostage negotiations in the U.S. criminal justice system, 1985
The present study measures the impact of hostage negotiation training among law enforcement officers. The controlling variables are: (a) the mode of their initiation in the area of hostage situations; and (b) the number of hostage situations that a given officer has participated in during the year 1984. One hundred respondents were drawn at the national level , but only sixty-eight responses were received. The data collection was done through mailed questionnaires. The study employed the discriminant and Pearson's correlation analyses at its inferential level. The study found that as the officers' mode of initiation to receive hostage negotiation training shifts from 'psychological testing' to 'volunteer', they tend to receive special training for hostage situations. A significant negative relationship was observed between the number of hostage situations that a given respondent has participated in during the year 1984 and (a) department on-going training programs for hostage situations, and (b) respondent's feelings on the adequacy of the training. Thus, volunteers have more positive attitudes toward hostage negotiation training than the other groups (whose mode of initiation was in the following areas: board interview, special training, experience in actual cases, appointment from rank, psychological interview, and psychological testing). In addition, those who had the facility of offering hostage negotiation training in their departments could participate more often than others

A comparative analysis of the effectiveness of selected variables from two preschool program models for children with developmental delays, 1975
American education is committed to the development of the indi-vidual; and one of the responsibilities the country has accepted in ful-filling this commitment is that of free public education for all children of all people. It is, therefore, from the framework of America's professed commit-ment as set forth in its goals of education: self realization, human relationships, effective citizenship, and economic efficiency that the defense for a downward extension of free public education to include early childhood education is supported. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the Center Based and Home Based Parent Training Models on the selected vari-ables: developmental gains of children, parent involvement, administration, and cost-effectiveness; and the relationship of these variables to the growth gains of focal children. The experimental method of research was used in this study. The procedures used to obtain data for this research report were: (1) To test the null hypotheses that there are no significant differences between the developmental gains of randomly selected subjects in the two experimental programs; and between each experimental group and the randomly selected subjects in the control group. (2) To analyze the Quarterly Evaluation Reports of the Regional Evaluation Team for each project under the headings: Administration, Parent Involvement and Budget. Selected Findings 1. There was a significant difference between the growth gains of focal children enrolled in the Home Based Parent Training Program as against the focal children enrolled in the Center Based Program in com-munication skills. 2. There were significant differences between each experimental group and the control group in the five areas of growth and development identified in the study. 3. The administration of the projects was given low priority in the Quarterly Evaluation Reports. The Parent Child Center administrator was cited as 'above average' in the Parent Child Center Evaluation Report, but administration was not mentioned in the Home Based Parent Training Quarterly Evaluation Reports. 4. Since parent participation was part of the selection criteria, the parents were actively involved in both of the experimental programs. The data from the Parent Response Forms indicated that eighty-eight percent (88) of the Center Based parents, and one hundred percent (100) of the Home Based parents would continue to teach their children a period each day if the projects were discontinued. 5. An analysis of the budgets showed that there was a cost differ-ence of 270.00 per child and 155.00 6. There tended to be a relationship between the variables: admin-istrative process and parent involvement as evidenced by the growth gains of the focal children enrolled in the experimental programs. Conclusions There were no significant differences between the two delivery systems for children with developmental delays except in the area of communication skills. Comparisons of the experimental group with the control group indicated that early intervention can accelerate learning. The parents involved in the experimental programs understood the projects* philosophy, goals and objectives. Parents were positive in their attitudes toward their project. The capable administration (management) of the projects assured the public that the services for which the programs were designed were delivered in a manner that stimulated growth for the program participants and its personnel. The study pointed out that the needs of focal children with develop-mental delays are many, but to meet these needs, careful-attention must be given to purpose (overall growth and development) administration, parent participation, and cost-effectiveness to gather the information necessary for future planning of early intervention programs

Conformational studies on turkey liver fructose 1,6-bisphos-phatase using the fluorescent hydrophobic probe, 1-anilino-naphthalene- 8 -sulfonate., 1976
The fluorescence emission of the hydrophobic probe, 1-anilinonaphthalene-8-sulfonate (ANS) was used to monitor conformational changes of turkey liver fructose 1,6-bispbos- phatase (FbPase) as a function of changes in pH, addition of substrate (fructose 1,6-bisphosphate), inhibitor (adenosine monophosphate), and the divalent cations Mg2+, Mn2+, and Co2+. Changes in the ANS fluorescence emission spectra indicate that conformational changes in the enzyme occur under the above conditions. The fluorescence emission of the hydro phobic probe., was markedly increased in the presence of turkey liver FbPase. All enzyme modifications reflect conformational changes in the enzyme
Tensile fracture and scanning electron microscopy of polymers, 1982
Fracture surface topography for Nylon 66, Fluorel, Kel-Teflon, Fluorogold, Fluorogreen, Garlock 8S73 and Roulon A has been studied and characterized. The methodology for the investigation includes fracture of the polymers under tension with the Instron, coating with gold using the EMS-76 sputtering unit and subsequent observation with the Omniscan Scanning Electron Microscope. Some fracture mechanisms are discussed in the paper. Breaking stress, strain and elongation data are reported. Classification of the polymer fractures are also reported
A comparative analysis of depression between incarcerated and unincarcerated juvenile delinquents, 1994
The overall objective of this study is to compare the relationship between depression and juvenile delinquents in both the incarcerated and unincarcerated populations. In comparing these two groups, the juveniles were categorized as being mildly, moderately and severely depressed. A descriptive research design was used in the study. A self-administered questionnaire was given to 25 incarcerated juveniles at the Lorenzo Benn Detention Center in Atlanta, Georgia, while the same questionnaire was given to 25 youth from a local Atlanta Outreach Program at the Y.M.C.A. Results indicate that a significant difference exists between the level of depression among incarcerated and unincarcerated juvenile delinquents
