Porter came to NBS in 1950 and was Chief of the Personnel Division from 1951-1974. Porter discusses the attitudes of scientists at the Bureau towards the civil service system in the 1950s and 1960s, management and staff relations, and notable events including the AD-X2 controversy. Also mentioned are the NBS Graduate School Program, the relocation of the Bureau from Washington, D.C. to Gaithersburg, and the role of women in the Bureau

    We report precision measurements by Fourier transform spectroscopy of the vacuum wavenumber, line width, and relative signal strength of 928 lines in the Ar I spectrum. Wavelength in air and classification of the transition are supplied for each line. A comparison of our results with other precision measurements illustrates the sensitivity of Ar I wavelengths to conditions in the light source

    A method to include the influence of the vertical electron beam emittance onto the calculability of synchrotron radiation is introduced. It accounts for the finite vertical size and angular spread of the electron beam through a convolution procedure. The resulting angular spread of synchrotron radiation can differ significantly from the ideal Schwinger result, depending on the conditions. For the Synchrotron Ultraviolet Radiation Facility detailed results on the influence of the electron emittance for total power and polarization calculations are presented

    Microbeam characterization of corning archeological reference glasses: New additions to the Smithsonian Microbeam Standard collection

    An initial study of the minor element, trace element, and impurities in Corning archeological references glasses have been performed using three microbeam techniques: electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), laser ablation ICP-mass spectrometry (LA ICP-MS), and secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS). The EPMA results suggest a significant level of heterogeneity for a number of metals. Conversely, higher precision and a larger sampling volume analysis by LA ICP-MS indicates a high degree of chemical uniformity within all glasses, typically <2 % relative (1 &sigma;). SIMS data reveal that small but measurable quantities of volatile impurities are present in the glasses, including H at roughly the 0.0001 mass fraction level. These glasses show promise for use as secondary standards for minor and trace element analyses of insulating materials such as synthetic ceramics, minerals, and silicate glasses
