The Strategies Reducing the Negative Externalities of Semi-trailer Truck Transportation in Eastern Economic Corridor Area

    No full text
The rising demand for sea-container transportation in most developing countries escalates the number of semi-trailer trucks (STTs) on the road resulting in air pollution, road accident, and traffic congestion. To address these negative externalities, this study originally identified a set of traffic control strategies and adopted the ordered logit model to analyze its effectiveness in reducing the STTs’ externalities in Laem Chabang municipality where many large seaports are located. The existing literature was used as the reference to generate the relevant attributions used to develop a questionnaire survey randomly distributed to the respondents in five communities. Based on 414 responses, the immediate lane changing was ranked the first, followed by the violation of speed limit, and the unsafe parking, while the defect of vehicle, support equipment, and coupling device was ranked in the top five potential causes of STTs’ externalities. The ordered logit model revealed that the non-engineering strategies, especially legal enforcement and driving skill improvement, had a larger impact on the reduction of negative externalities caused by both drivers and their vehicles, while the engineering strategies, such as rumble strips, and automatic speed camera, tended to reduce only the driver-generated externalities. Poor and Hunger: How Do Indigenous Peoples’ Respond to COVID-19 in Indonesia?

    No full text
Indigenous Dayaks in Balai District, Sanggau Regency West Kalimantan, Indonesia has a vulnerability and is at risk of Coronavirus exposure, especially for Dayaks aged 50 years and over. Since March, the COVID-19 outbreak was already a national disaster by the Indonesian National Disaster Management Agency. However, today, there is no specific operational guideline relevant to the COVID-19 response to indigenous people issued by national authorities. This means that guidelines for handling the health sector based on cultural approaches to indigenous people do not yet exist. This is an additional challenge for indigenous communities facing the Coronavirus outbreak (COVID-19). The research method uses qualitative. The data collection is an interview by phone and sourcing online. The data is also furnished with secondary data from various sources such as online news, proceedings and scientific journals, and books. Since the COVID-19 outbreak was discovered in Indonesia last March 2020, indigenous tribes in rural areas have not been urged to be prepared to deal with this virus. In the indigenous Dayak Benawan tribe, they were only alerted about the COVID-19 outbreak after this epidemic was a national disaster. Forms of public anticipation include spraying disinfectant liquid in every home and an appeal for handwashing with soap. Besides, the form of response of the local community is by carrying out the Nyapet ritual (warding off illness entering their village). This ritual requires that everyone stays at home for three days and three nights. They may not visit other people’s houses and may not receive guests. The Nyapet concept is the same as the local lockdown carried out by the Dayak Benawan community. Assistance from the government is only targeted at participating in social security participants and the Family of Hope Program or Program Kelurga Harapan. This means that government assistance is not comprehensive to the indigenous people of Dayak Benawan. On the other hand, some poor Dayak Benawan indigenous people are not registered as social security participants by the government. Keywords: Indigenous People, Dayak Benawan, Poor, Hunger, COVID-1

Mentoring Model through Professional Learning Community with Information and Communication Technology via Cloud Computing for Pre-Service Teachers

This study aims to (1) develop mentoring model through Professional Learning Community (PLC) with Information and Communication Technology (ICT) via Cloud Computing for pre-service teachers and (2) evaluate an appropriateness of the mentoring model through PLC with ICT via Cloud Computing for pre-service teachers. Seven information technology and education experts selected by purposive sampling method were participate in the study. Moreover, they evaluated the appropriate of the design and provided suggestions. The research instruments used were: (1) a draft of Mentoring model through PLC with ICT via Cloud Computing for pre-service teachers’ model. (2) an appropriate evaluation forms. Data analysis was done by mean (x̄), standard deviation (S.D.), and content analysis. From the results research, the draft of model was found to be high appropriate (x̄ = 4.15, S.D.= 0.38). A model for mentoring through PLC in 6 steps was obtained, including community, analysis, design, practice, reflection and evaluation. All these steps have been operated with the ICT system via Cloud Computing including E-Management, E-Meeting, E-Coaching and Mentoring, E-Documents, and E- Evaluation. Similarities or Differences: The Exposure to Media Messages among Thai-So Women, Kusuman District, Sakon Nakhon Province, Thailand

The objective of this research was to investigate the types of mass media and media messages exposed to each generation of the Thai-So women across three villages. Purposive sampling technique was used for selecting 30 key informants. The research instrument was semi-structured interview guideline. Data were analyzed by content analysis. The research results could be divided into two parts. Firstly, the exposure to mass media, all three generations did not read a newspaper, but they listened to the radio and watched television. Some Generation X-ers started to use the internet while baby boomers did not. Generation Y-ers were ‘digital natives’, so it was not surprising that they chose to use the internet to a greater extent than traditional media. Interestingly, the smart phone became the most important device for accessing the internet; Generation X-ers and Generation Y-ers were exposed to content through those platforms – namely Youtube, Joox, Line TV, Facebook and Line. Secondly, regarding the exposure to media messages, the characteristics of media messages exposed to them were similar – that is entertainment, knowledge, and news programs. However, when the researcher considered the details of the media messages, it was found that there were differences. As such, the media messages most popular with the baby boomers were those presented in a Thai series format, while Indian series and Korean series were popular with Generation X-ers and Generation Y-ers respectively. Consequently, the research results concluded that there were both similarities and differences regarding the exposure to mass media, and the media message content, among the three generations. Evaluation of Probiotic Properties of Lactic Acid Bacteria Isolated from Fermented Fish

    Get PDF
The present study describes the potential probiotic lactic acid bacteria isolated from fermented fish. A total of 23 isolates of lactic acid bacteria were purified using MRS medium. All the isolates were assessed for tolerance to low pH. It was observed that only 4 isolates (UP2, UP9, UP16, and UP20) could survive at pH 2. These isolates further evaluated in vitro for bile salts tolerance, NaCl tolerance, phenol tolerance, antagonistic activity, b-Galactosidase production, and cell surface hydrophobicity. Based on results, all selected isolates possessed a b-galactosidase and showed an ability to tolerate in bile salt, NaCl, and phenol. Among 4 selected LABs, isolates UP 20 and UP2 showed the higher cell hydrophobicity as 81% and 68.8%, respectively. These results indicate that isolate UP20 and UP2 might be useful as probiotics. However, further studies may be performed to confirm their potential health benefits and applications. Keywords: probiotic properties, lactic acid bacteria, fermented fish &nbsp
