Alternative tourism for sustainability has been in operation, but not truly successful, because of the lack of effective concepts. This research, therefore, reviews and analyzes a new concept using localization as a platform and selects a prominent local capital as a powerful tourism resource. Further, it investigates and synthesizes deeper into the ‘virtue’, a powerful driving operation of the capital independent from controls of capitalism and globalization. To become a promising alternative tourism, this research tests this concept by inventing an innovative package and community-based management to transform the ‘virtue’ into the ‘value’ of this tourism resource.      This research uses Mae Kampong, one of the famous tourist attractions in Chiang Mai, but without appropriate concepts, as the case study. Within a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach, qualitative, quantitative and spatial methodologies are employed in a two-fold purpose. Firstly, the analysis of components and conditions guiding holistic operations of the Meang system is the prominent local capital. Secondly, interrelationships between three main components, forest ecology, Meang production, and socio-cultural aspects of Meang people are synthesized using logical fitness of operations and their utilities for derivation of the ‘virtue’. Finally, findings from such analyses are used as a conceptual guide for inventing and testing a community-based tourism package as the transformation into the value of this resource.      This research finds that Meang system at Mae Kampong has been sustainable from balanced interactions among the three main components, resulting in good production of Meang, ecological balance of forest, and sufficient socio-cultural livelihood. From synthesis of ‘virtue’, it finds that the thinking system leading to on-going operation is the combination of long adaptation of local wisdom through learning process. This thinking system has been the core guiding power for maintaining the balance of the three interrelated components and the impacts on livelihood of the Meang people. In addition, the observable holistic utility from which the Meang people benefit, is good mental and physical health with long life span. When tourist packages are invented such as the ‘Natural Therapy’ tourism scheme, the value of this capital has the capacity to flow on as tourists from the big cities come to appreciate the balance of these three components to recharge their battery lives.      The new concept that this research proposes and tests is an attempt to open the new dimension of sustainable tourism managed by community. Its implication requires more sample sites to test the concept, and more and effective adoption and action to materialize such a tourism scheme by policy makers and tourism supporting organizations in the future. No full text
Melanoidins are brown recalcitrant compounds present in the effluents of ethanol production, and brewery industry. It is difficult to biodegrade by the conventional treatment processes. Adsorption process was reported to have achieved more than 90% of melanoidin removal. However, due to its high operating cost has limited its use for wastewater treatment, alternative low-cost adsorbents are finding from various materials such as plant waste. The L. leucocephala was reported as a potential material for adsorbent due to their properties. The aim of this work was to produce the low-cost adsorbent L. leucocephala activated carbon (LAC) derive from L. leucocephala char by CO2 activation method. Batch experiments were carried out to determine the optimum conditions for melanoidin adsorbed on LAC samples. Kinetic data and adsorption equilibrium isotherm were done in the batch experiments. The results showed the LAC samples had the high surface areas in the range of 823.63-1,596.20 m2/g. Maximum adsorption capacity of melanoidin on the LAC samples were found in the range of 588.24-1,666.67 mg/g. The optimum adsorption conditions of the LAC were obtained at the contact time of 480 min, the initial melanoidin concentration of 1,000 mg/L, the initial solution pH of 2, the agitation speed of 100 rpm and the temperature of 65˚C. This finding is a useful tool for scale-up and design purposes to apply for wastewater treatment of industry. It can be concluded that the LAC is a potential material to produce as a low-cost adsorbent for the removal of melanoidin from wastewater.  Keywords: Melanoidin, Adsorption, Leucocephala, Activated carbon, Low-cost adsorben

It aimed to outline policy suggestions on land utilization in Thailand. The research was conducted with the mixed method of behavioral science research and social sciences methods, as well as quantitative and qualitative methods, in target provinces: Tak, Songkhla, Sakaew, Mukdaharn, Chiangrai, Kanchanaburi and Phitsanulok. The findings revealed that the economy in the target areas had the tendency to expand and grow due to influential factors: increase in gross provincial products, trade value rise at the boundary, area development strategies, infrastructure development in the special economic zones, and development of communication routes and transportation systems. However, it was found that land administration and management still lacked operational units; rights document systems were of many standards; most lands were in the possession of public sectors and capitalist groups; there were lacks of planning and supervision; and covert land possession of aliens. The policy suggestions are to provide opportunity and fairness in land tenure and land use, enhance land-use efficiency and improve land management systems sustainably.
