James Mackintosh and early nineteenth-century English criminal law
This article examines the criminal law reform career of James Mackintosh (1765–1832). As Recorder of Bombay (1804–11), writer and Whig MP (1813–32), Mackintosh engaged with diverse aspects of criminal law. His view of the organic relationship between law, society, and public opinion, which was shaped by his Scottish intellectual background and Foxite Whig politics, was distinct from the radical and liberal political perspectives most often associated with criminal law reform. The article traces the implications of Mackintosh's approach for the practice of politics and legislation in the period and suggests cause to revise assessments of its outcomes
Residential sorting and environmental externalities::The case of nonlinearities and stigma in aviation noise values
This paper explores the sorting process in response to differing levels of aviation noise exposure in a housing market. Spatiotemporal hedonic pricing (HP) and stated choice (SC) results reflect nonlinearities and stigma. The HP models reveal nonlinear noise depreciation increasing from 0.40 to 2.38 percent per decibel as noise increases, while the SC noise values are lower in an area with high long-term noise exposure. These nonlinearities are attributed to the spatial sorting of noise tolerant individuals. HP results from the same “noisy” area show a “stigma” from noise during the first year after the complete removal of aviation noise

Targeted lipidomic strategies for oxygenated metabolites of polyunsaturated fatty acids
Oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) through enzymatic or non-enzymatic free radical-mediated reactions can yield an array of lipid metabolites including eicosanoids, octadecanoids, docosanoids and related species. In mammals, these oxygenated PUFA mediators play prominent roles in the physiological and pathological regulation of many key biological processes in the cardiovascular, renal, reproductive and other systems including their pivotal contribution to inflammation. Mass spectrometry-based technology platforms have revolutionized our ability to analyze the complex mixture of lipid mediators found in biological samples, with increased numbers of metabolites that can be simultaneously quantified from a single sample in few analytical steps. The recent development of high-sensitivity and high-throughput analytical tools for lipid mediators affords a broader view of these oxygenated PUFA species, and facilitates research into their role in health and disease. In this review, we illustrate current analytical approaches for a high-throughput lipidomic analysis of eicosanoids and related mediators in biological samples. Development of Electric Field Stress Control Devices for a 132 kV Insulating Cross-arm using Finite Element Analysis
Insulating cross-arms (ICA) allow compaction or upgrading of transmission lines. The process of designing and verifying the performance of electric field grading devices is reported for rigid cross-arms on a 132 kV lattice tower. For the grounded end, traditional grading devices resembling rings which follow the general shape of the insulators were designed. For the high-voltage (HV) end, an iterative process yielded a novel grading device which is a unibody piece of cast aluminium that manages the field on all four ICA members. Finite element analysis (FEA) simulations show that the electric field magnitude at the triple junctions of the insulating members meet the design criteria of 3.5 kV/cm. Also the field magnitude on the metallic end-fittings and electric field grading devices is maintained below 18 kV/cm. The corona extinction test was performed on ICA assemblies showing that the grading devices can effectively control the electric field at voltages of up to 132 kV since the average corona extinction voltage was 173.7 kV, well above the required value. The complete ICA assemblies were installed on an existing line in Scotland in August 2013. This paper provides a set of recommendations for use of FEA in the design of complex insulation geometries
Hesitant Fuzzy Linguistic VIKOR Method and Its Application in Qualitative Multiple Criteria Decision Making
The hesitant fuzzy linguistic term set (HFLTS) has turned out to be a powerful and flexible technique in representing decision makers' qualitative assessments in the processes of decision making. The aim of this paper is to develop a method to solve the multicriteria decision making (MCDM) problem within the context of HFLTS in which the criteria conflict with each other. To do so, the concepts of ideal solutions for a HFL-MCDM problem have been introduced. In addition, in order to represent the closeness of one solution to the ideal one, we propose a sort of hesitant fuzzy linguistic measures, such as the hesitant fuzzy linguistic group utility measure, the hesitant fuzzy linguistic individual regret measure, and the hesitant fuzzy linguistic compromise measure. Based on these measures, we develop a hesitant fuzzy linguistic VIKOR (HFL-VIKOR) method, which is motivated by the traditional VIKOR method. The general procedures for the HFL-VIKOR method are given. Some numerical examples are provided to demonstrate the advantages and practicality of our method. Finally, we make some discussions on the advantages of the HFL-VIKOR method, as well as future work
Prion protein "gamma-cleavage": characterizing a novel endoproteolytic processing event
The cellular prion protein (PrPC) is a ubiquitously expressed protein of currently unresolved but potentially diverse function. Of putative relevance to normal biological activity, PrPC is recognized to undergo both alpha- and beta-endoproteolysis, producing the cleavage fragment pairs N1/C1 and N2/C2, respectively. Experimental evidence suggests the likelihood that these processing events serve differing cellular needs. Through the engineering of a C-terminal c-myc tag onto murine PrPC, as well as the selective use of a far-C-terminal anti-PrP antibody, we have identified a new PrPC fragment, nominally 'C3', and elaborating existing nomenclature, 'gamma-cleavage' as the responsible proteolysis. Our studies indicate that this novel gamma-cleavage event can occur during transit through the secretory pathway after exiting the endoplasmic reticulum, and after PrPC has reached the cell surface, by a matrix metalloprotease. We found that C3 is GPI-anchored like other C-terminal and full length PrPC species, though it does not localize primarily at the cell surface, and is preferentially cleaved from an unglycosylated substrate. Importantly, we observed that C3 exists in diverse cell types as well as mouse and human brain tissue, and of possible pathogenic significance, gamma-cleavage may increase in human prion diseases. Given the likely relevance of PrPC processing to both its normal function, and susceptibility to prion disease, the potential importance of this previously underappreciated and overlooked cleavage event warrants further consideration
Who speaks for Muslims? The role of the press in creating and reporting of Muslim public opinion polls in the aftermath of London bombings in July 2005
Muslim public opinion polls are mostly taken at face value as the direct and unbiased voice of British Muslims, but, as this article argues, most of the public opinion polls are commissioned by the media and suffer from similar framing effects to those seen in the general media coverage of Muslims. At a time of national crisis, following the London terrorist attacks in 2005, it has become especially clear that the media have been following their pre-existing narrative on Muslims rather than responding to public interest. We analyse all public opinion polls conducted in the 18 months following the 7 July attacks and all their broadsheet newspaper coverage to show that the media-framing effects influence both the creation of Muslim opinion polls and their reporting
