Resistive superconducting fault current limiter AC loss measurements and analysis
Resistive superconducting fault current limiters (SFCL’s) offer the advantages of low weight and compact structure. Multi-strand Magnesium Diboride (MgB2) wire can be used in SFCL coil design to increase the transport current capacity. A monofilament 0.36 mm MgB2 wire with a stainless steel sheath was used to build three SFCL coils with 3 strands, 16 (9+7) strands and 50 (28+22) strands of the MgB2 wire. The quench current level and AC losses in the MgB2 wire are critical design parameters for a resistive SFCL. The experimental results showed the measured quench current densities reduced as the strand number increased and the AC losses increased as the strand number increased. An axisymmetric 2D finite element (FE) model therefore was built to analyze the current distribution and the AC losses in the coil. The multi-stranded coil FE model showed that proximity effect can modify the current distribution in the strands. This not only reduces the current carrying ability, but also increases the AC losses non-linearly. The FE model confirmed the issues highlighted by the experimental testing. Finally a winding method for multi-strand coil has been proposed to reduce the impact of these effects

ABC: Using Object Tracking to Automate Behavioural Coding
Video data of people interacting with devices contains rich information about human behaviour that can be used to design or improve user experience. As a first step, it must be interpreted -- or coded -- into a form that can be analyzed systematically. The coding process is currently performed manually, and it can be slow and difficult, and biased by subjectivity. This is particularly problematic when trying to obtain data that should be objective, such as the movements of a user in relation to a device. We describe Automated Behavioural Coding (ABC), an open source object tracking technique designed to log user and device movements, and then output positional data that can be used to model interaction. We validate the technique in a study of dual screen TV viewing, and show that the ABC tool is able to correctly classify the direction of gaze to the TV or tablet up to 95\% of the time, in a fraction of the time it takes to capture this data manually
Connecting demand and supply: The role of intermediation in public procurement of innovation
Intermediation in innovation serves to establish or improve or improve the link between different actors with complementary skill sets or interests in order to support the generation and diffusion of innovation. This article conceptualises and analyses intermediation between supply and demand using the example of public procurement. As the paper looks at the demand for innovation it adopts a broad understanding of innovation, defined as a product, service or process that is novel to the buying organisation. In order to develop the conceptualisation of intermediation in the process of demanding innovation, it builds on the existing, rather rudimentary conceptualisation of intermediation in the innovation and management literature. It presents an in-depth analysis of two very different procurement processes in in complex public sector setting, the English NHS, one in which a public buying organisation triggers the generation of an innovation, and another in which an organisation absorbs an innovation offered in the marketplace. In both cases, the solution bought necessitated strong adaptation processes with considerable learning costs within the buying organisation. The paper shows how intelligent and tailored intermediation can tackle some of the well-known procedural and capability failures in the process of public procurement of innovation. In terms of policy implications, the article makes the claim for an increased effort to build up effective intermediation across procurement systems to support agencies in concrete procurement and, in doing so, to build up capacity for more intelligent public buying. While the focus on intermediation responds to an existing gap in the literature on public procurement of innovation, the paper has implication for demand-supply intermediation more generally
Customised OCR correction for historical medical text
Historical text archives constitute a rich and diverse source of information, which is becoming increasingly readily accessible, owing to large-scale digitisation efforts. Searchable access is typically provided by applying Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to scanned page images. Often, however, the automatically recognised text contains a large number of errors, since OCR systems are typically optimised to deal with modern documents, and can struggle with historical document features, including variable print characteristics and archaic vocabulary usage. Low quality OCR text can reduce the efficiency of search systems over historical archives, particularly semantic systems that are based on the application of sophisticated text mining (TM) techniques. We report on a new OCR correction strategy, customised for historical medical documents. The method combines rule-based correction of regular errors with a medically-tuned spell-checking strategy, whose corrections are guided by information about subject-specific language usage from the publication period of the article to be corrected. The performance of our method compares favourably to other OCR post-correction strategies, in improving word-level accuracy of poor-quality documents by up to 16%
Perceptual Recognition, Emotion, and Value
outline an account of perceptual knowledge and assess the extent to which it can be employed in a defence of perceptual accounts of emotion and value recognition. I argue that considerations ruling out lucky knowledge give us some reason to doubt its prospects in the case of value recognition. I also discuss recent empirical work on cultural and contextual influences on emotional expression, arguing that a perceptual account of value recognition is consistent with current evidence
Systemic therapy in elderly patients with advanced biliary tract cancer, sub-analysis of ABC-02 and ten other prospective studies
Background: Outcomes in elderly patients (pts), with advanced biliary tract cancer (ABTC) receiving palliative chemotherapy are unclear. The aim of this study was to assess the outcome of monotherapy vs combination therapy in elderly pts with ABTC in ABC-02, and 10 other prospective studies of systemic therapy. Methods: Multivariable analysis was employed to explore impact of therapy on progression-free (PFS) and overall survival (OS) in 2 age cohorts; non-elderly ( <70 yrs) vs elderly ( ≥ 70 yrs). Results: Overall, 1163 pts were recruited from Jan 97-Dec 13. Median age of entire cohort was 63 yrs (range 23-85); 260 (22%) were ≥ 70 yrs, 18 (2%) were ≥ 80 yrs. In pts ≥ 70 yrs; 208 had ECOG PS 0-1, 129; male and 174; metastatic disease. Combination therapy was platinum-based in 9 studies. Among the 260 pts ≥ 70 yrs, 182 (70%) received combination therapy. Baseline characteristics/therapy received was balanced in both age cohorts. Median follow-up time for all pts was 42 months (95% CI 37-51). Median PFS for those <70 yrs and ≥ 70 yrs was 6.0 (95% CI 5.5-6.4) and 5.0 months (95% CI 4.2-6.4) respectively. Median OS for pts <70 yrs and ≥ 70 yrs was 10.2 (95% CI 9.6-11.1) and 8.8 months (95% CI 7.9-9.6) respectively. For the entire cohort, the PFS and OS were significantly better in those pts receiving combination therapy: HR 0.66, 95% CI 0.58-0.76, P <0.0001 and HR 0.72, 95% CI 0.63-0.82, P <0.0001 respectively, and in group ≥ 70 yrs: HR 0.54 (95% CI 0.38-0.77, P = 0.001) and HR 0.6 (95% CI 0.43-0.85, P = 0.004) respectively. In pts <70 yrs, stage (locally advanced vs metastatic) and ECOG PS were prognostic for PFS (P <0.001 and P = 0.04 respectively) and OS (P <0.001 and P = 0.001 respectively) and in pts ≥ 70 yrs, they were prognostic for OS (P = 0.03 and P = 0.02 respectively). There was no evidence of interaction between age ( <70 yrs and ≥ 70 yrs) and treatment (monotherapy and combination therapy) for PFS (P = 0.66) or OS (P = 0.75). Conclusions: In ABTC, PFS and OS in elderly pts receiving palliative chemotherapy (monotherapy or combination therapy) are comparable with that of non-elderly pts, therefore age in isolation should not influence treatment decisions. Clinical trial participation among elderly pts with ABTC is appropriate
