    Short-time Fourier Transform and Superoscillations

    Get PDF
In this paper we investigate new results on the theory of superoscillations using time-frequency analysis tools and techniques such as the short-time Fourier transform (STFT) and the Zak transform. We start by studying how the short-time Fourier transform acts on superoscillation sequences. We then apply the supershift property to prove that the short-time Fourier transform preserves the superoscillatory behavior by taking the limit. It turns out that these computations lead to interesting connections with various features of time-frequency analysis such as Gabor spaces, Gabor kernels, Gabor frames, 2D-complex Hermite polynomials, and polyanalytic functions. We treat different cases depending on the choice of the window function moving from the general case to more specific cases involving the Gaussian and the Hermite windows. We consider also an evolution problem with an initial datum given by superoscillation multiplied by the time-frequency shifts of a generic window function. Finally, we compute the action of STFT on the approximating sequences with a given Hermite window

In this lesson, students interpret graphs of sea hare respiration. Then, students view and reflect on an interview with environmental scientist Dr. Richelle Tanner, who collected the data in the graph. This lesson was designed for a 75-min class period with in-person delivery. Target student level is introductory biology for majors. The materials here include an instructor guide (1_LessonGuide_The Impact of Climate Change on Sea Hare Respiration), an in-class presentation (Google slides; 2_PresentationSlides_The Impact of Climate Change on Sea Hare Respiration), and a link to the interview with Dr. Richelle Tanner, (BioGraphI Interview with Richelle Tanner).https://digitalcommons.chapman.edu/oer/1001/thumbnail.jp

It is Time for a Precise, Narrowly Tailored Federal Right of Publicity

    Get PDF
A precise, narrowly tailored federal right of publicity will promote creativity and business rather than stifle it, and also protect First Amendment rights. In this article, Part I discusses whether the right of publicity should be considered a privacy or property right, and illustrates the importance of a publicity right. Part II provides an overview of the lack of consistency and uniformity between states’ right of publicity statutes. Finally, Part III examines what a federal right of publicity should look like and how a federal right would apply in practice

    Are Short-Selling Restrictions Effective?

    Get PDF
Despite strong theoretical predictions based on disagreement, limited empirical evidence links short-selling restrictions to higher prices. We test this relationship using quasi-experimental methods based on rule 201, a threshold-based policy that restricts aggressive short selling when intraday returns cross −10%. When comparing stocks on either side of the threshold in the same hour of trading, we find that the restriction leads to 8% lower short-sale volume and 35 basis points higher daily returns. These price effects do not reverse after the restriction is lifted

Piecing Together Performance: Collaborative, Participatory Research-Through-Design for Better Diversity in Games

    Get PDF
Digital games are a multi-billion-dollar industry whose production and consumption extend globally. Representation in games is an increasingly important topic. As those who create and consume the medium grow ever more diverse, it is essential that player or user-experience research, usability, and any consideration of how people interface with their technology is exercised through inclusive and intersectional lenses. Previous research has identified how character configuration interfaces preface white-male defaults [39, 40, 67]. This study relies on 1-on-1 play-interviews where diverse participants attempt to create “themselves” in a series of games and on group design activities to explore how participants may envision more inclusive character configuration interface design. Our interview findings describe specific points of tension in the process of creating characters in existing interfaces and the sketches participant-collaborators produced challenge the homogeneity of current interface designs. This project amplifies the perspective of diverse participant-collaborators to provide constructive implications and a series of principles for designing more inclusive character configuration interfaces, which support more diverse stories and gameworlds by reconfiguring the constraints that shape those stories and gameworlds

Is Dance A Universal Language? - Global Contemporary Dance

    Get PDF
From its origins, a core value of contemporary dance is rebellion. The definition of contemporary dance has evolved throughout the decades as dancers continue to discover innovative movements that almost contradict their predecessors, inspiring its ever-evolving aesthetic. Unlike other technical styles like ballet, there is no strict codified “right” or “wrong,” nor is there a set vocabulary, meaning contemporary dance can look like a lot of things. A common conception when it comes to dance in general is how it transcends nationalities as a universal language of sorts. However, given the individualistic nature of contemporary dance and global varieties of culture I sought to prove how dance may not be as universal as it is commonly deemed. How does the concept of ethnography (the study of social and behavioral differences amongst cultures) apply to contemporary dancers across the globe? While training in the beautiful northern Italian countryside at Orsolina 28, I explored what factors (including technique, artistry, approach, etc.) distinguish contemporary dancers in their training. Through reflection of my personal training in the United States doing competition dance and now collegiate dance and surveys of peers from around the world, I was able to draw comparisons of priorities when it comes to contemporary dance training

Aquí y Ahora: The Role of US Spanish-Language TV News in Financial Vulnerability

    No full text
In today’s world, the news we watch often does more than inform us; it can shape how secure or insecure we feel about our future. In this paper, I examine the extent to which an individual’s consumption of particular Spanish-speaking TV news channels contribute to their sense of financial vulnerability. Using an original data set of responses to the questions in the American National Election Studies (ANES), I find a moderately strong relationship between the television news channel Aquí y Ahora, and the degree to which they are worried about their financial situation. While it is true that various factors such as employment status, household size, and marital status contribute to this financial worry, a person’s choice of television station can be an indicator of an increased sense of financial insecurity. This suggests that watching Aquí y Ahora, especially for immigrants and first generation Americans, may influence financial distress, leading to a tense relationship with personal finances, economic uncertainty, and low financial confidence. Therefore, it is highly important to recognize media biases within the Spanish-speaking television networks to address the urgent need for informing the immigrant and first-generation Hispanic population on how news may influence their opinions. Ultimately, this highlights how critical it is to be cognizant of communication rhetoric in Spanish-speaking television networks to accurately inform the Hispanic population while setting them up for upward financial mobility

    Capitalism, Democracy, and Adam Smith

How can we better understand the relationship between capitalism and democracy today? This article challenges the prevailing “independence thesis” that views capitalism and democracy as separate and often antagonistic systems. By revisiting Adam Smith’s integrationist approach to political economy, I argue for a more nuanced understanding of the symbiotic relationship between political and economic orders. The article critically examines common responses to the independence thesis – insulation and implementation strategies – and proposes an alternative framework based on Smith’s integrated political economy. This Smithian perspective not only offers a more accurate description of the interdependence between capitalism and democracy but also provides a robust foundation for addressing contemporary challenges in political economy

How Family Communication Emerges in HPV Vaccine Parent Narratives

    No full text
Family communication surrounding HPV vaccination can support or hinder HPV cancer prevention strategies. We used narrative communication theory to elicit HPV vaccine decision narratives in the context of family communication from a purposive sample of 29 parents of adolescents. Parent narratives indicated that family negotiations occur throughout the decision-making process, topic avoidance was common among parents of unvaccinated and undervaccinated children, parents had concerns that vaccination is a sign of approving sexual permissiveness, and family communication was often prompted by encounters in the exam room. Understanding complex family dynamics in the context of vaccination decision-making, the role of family communication (or lack thereof) in decisions, and effective negotiation and communication strategies can inform messaging tactics aimed at addressing disagreements in families and indicate how vaccinating may align rather than conflict with family values

Changing Characteristics of Land Cover, Landscape Pattern and Ecosystem Services in the Bohai Rim Region of China

    Get PDF
Since the Anthropocene, ecosystems have been continuously deteriorating due to global climate change and human intervention. Exploring the changing characteristics of land use/land cover (LULC), landscape pattern and ecosystem service (ES) and their drivers is crucial for regional ecosystem management and sustainable development. Taking the Bohai Rim region of China as an example, we used the land use transfer matrix, landscape pattern index and InVEST model to analyze the changing characteristics of LULC, landscape pattern and six key ESs [crop production (CP), water yield (WY), carbon storage (CS), soil conservation (SC), habitat quality (HQ), landscape aesthetics (LA)] during 2000–2020. Detailed analysis of the natural and anthropogenic factors affecting the landscape pattern and ES changes has been considered in this study. The results show that the areas of forest, water and impervious land increased, while those of cropland, shrubs, grassland and barren land decreased during 2000–2020. The landscape was fragmented, complex and decentralized during 2000–2015, while the three trends eased during 2015–2020. From 2000 to 2020, CP, WY, and SC capacity show an increasing trend, while CS, HQ, and LA capacity tend to a decline. Natural factors (e.g., precipitation, temperature, altitude) and human factors (e.g., technological progress, policy changes, and LULC forms) are the main factors affecting landscape pattern and ESs. The present study can provide theoretical basis for ecological restoration, ecological product value realization, and land planning in the typical developed urban area
