    Challenges and Future Directions in Quantifying Terrestrial Evapotranspiration

    Terrestrial evapotranspiration is the second-largest component of the land water cycle, linking the water, energy, and carbon cycles and influencing the productivity and health of ecosystems. The dynamics of ET across a spectrum of spatiotemporal scales and their controls remain an active focus of research across different science disciplines. Here, we provide an overview of the current state of ET science across in situ measurements, partitioning of ET, and remote sensing, and discuss how different approaches complement one another based on their advantages and shortcomings. We aim to facilitate collaboration among a cross-disciplinary group of ET scientists to overcome the challenges identified in this paper and ultimately advance our integrated understanding of ET

    Scaled Global Operators and Fueter Variables on Non-zero Scaled Hypercomplex Numbers

    In this paper we describe the rise of global operators in the scaled quaternionic case, an important extension from the quaternionic case to the family of scaled hypercomplex numbers Ht, t ∈ R∗ , of which the H−1 = H is the space of quaternions and H1 is the space of split quaternions.We also describe the scaled Fueter-type variables associated to these operators, developing a coherent theory in this field. We use these types of variables to build different types of function spaces on Ht. Counterparts of the Hardy space and of the Arveson space are also introduced and studied in the present setting. The two different adjoints in the scaled hypercomplex numbers lead to two parallel cases in each instance. Finally we introduce and study the notion of rational function

    Phase-Slip Centers as Cooling Engines

    Based on time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau system of equations, Éliashberg’s kinetic equations and finite element modeling, we analyze phonon emission by the phase-slip centers in superconducting filaments. Our results show that in the dissipative regime with these centers, thin superconducting filaments can be effective in originating not only positive but also negative thermal fluxes, i.e., they both generate and absorb phonons. In a stationary oscillatory regime, at a given moment of time, this generation and absorption of phonons reveals itself as positive and negative spectrum of phonons at different spectral ranges. Moreover, at a given spectral range, the emission reverses its sign during the period of oscillation. This fact is associated with the reciprocation of the energy emission and absorption at different spectral intervals during the oscillation period of the phase-slip center. The integral value of energy over the whole spectral range is time-dependent, being positive for some part of the period and negative for the rest of it. Its time integral over the period reveals a positive value, which corresponds to the total energy released in this dissipative state of superconducting filament. In a simple case, when the filament is embedded in a thermal heat bath (substrates typically play that role), this energy dissipates, elevating locally the temperature of filament’s environment. However, in a more sophisticated design, the positive and negative fluxes may become separated. This can be achieved by using the thermal diode effect (the Kapitza boundaries can play the role of such diodes). Such a separation may yield to the net cooling of some part of the filament environment, while the other part will serve as a heat sink. Thus, with an appropriate design of their thermal surroundings, the phase-slip centers can serve as effective solid-state cooling engines. They may be effective for reducing further the cryostat cold finger temperature; for example, from 1 K to sub-K temperatures

    Human Milk Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids are Related to Neurodevelopmental, Anthropometric, and Allergic Outcomes in Early Life: A Systematic Review

    Polyunsaturated fatty acids are critically important for newborn nutrition and in the trajectory of growth and developmental processes throughout early life. This systematic review (PROSPERO ID: CRD42023400059) critically analyzes literature pertaining to how omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids in human milk are related to health outcomes in early life. Literature selected for the review were published between 2005 and 2020 and included assessments in healthy term children between 0 and 5 years of age. The studies reported the relation between human milk fatty acids docosahexaenoic acid (C22:6n-3, DHA), eicosapentaenoic acid (C20:5n-3, EPA), alpha-linolenic acid (C18:3n-3, ALA), arachidonic acid (C20:4n-6, AA), and linoleic acid (C18:2n-6, LA) with three domains of health outcomes: neurodevelopment, body composition, and allergy, skin & eczema. Results from the 21 studies consistently suggested better health outcomes across the three domains for infants consuming milk with higher concentrations of total n-3, DHA, EPA, and ALA. Negative health outcomes across the three domains were associated with higher levels of total n-6, AA, and LA in milk. N-3 and n-6 content of milk were related to neurodevelopmental, body composition, and allergy, skin & eczema outcomes with moderate certainty. Maternal diet impacting milk fatty acid content and fatty acid desaturase genotype modifying physiologic responses to fatty acid intake were prominent gaps identified in the review using the NIH Quality Assessment Tool for Observational Cohort and Cross-Sectional Studies and GRADE approach. This research study can inform baby nutrition product development, and fatty acid intake recommendations or dietary interventions for mothers and children

    How Does Passive Investing Effect the Informational Efficiency of Prices?

    We investigate the causal effects of passive investing on informational efficiency and market quality metrics by developing a novel laboratory experiment that introduces Index trackers with exogenous passive investment flows. We find that, while improving liquidity, Index tracking hurts informational efficiency, confirming our main hypothesis. Furthermore, we observe violations of the law of one price, leading to widespread and persistent arbitrage opportunities. Additionally, our research uncovers that Active traders, particularly those with private information about asset values and high cognitive ability, reap benefits from the introduction of Index tracking
