   The Oman GSPS includes data on prevalence of cigarette 
and other tobacco use as well as information on attitudes on 
school policy toward tobacco use, access to teaching materials 
and training, and attitudes toward tobacco use.  These factors 
are components Oman could include in a comprehensive 
tobacco control program. 
 The Oman GSPS was a school-based survey of school 
personnel from the schools that participated in the 2002 Oman 
GYTS.  
The GYTS was conducted in schools having students in grades 
8, 9, and 10.  For the GYTS, a two-stage cluster sample design 
was used to produce representative data for all of Oman.  At the 
first stage, schools were selected with probability proportional 
to enrollment size.  At the second stage, classes were randomly 
selected and all students in selected classes were eligible to 
participate.  The school response rate was 100.0%.  For the 
GSPS, 100.0% of the school personnel completed the survey, 
for a total of 1,397 teachers and administrators. 
 
Prevalence of Tobacco Use among School Personnel 
 
18.1% ever smoked cigarettes (Admin = 15.3%, Teachers = 18.2%) 
5.4% currently use any tobacco product (Admin = 5.5%, Teachers = 5.4%) 
5.0% currently smoke cigarettes (Admin = 5.1%, Teachers = 5.0%) 
0.8% currently use other tobacco products (Admin = 1.2%, Teachers = 0.8%) 
4.4% smoked on school property in the past year (Admin = 5.0%, Teachers = 4.4%)  
 
School Policies Prohibiting Tobacco Use 
 
99.3% agree schools should have policy prohibiting tobacco use among students 
48.6% report school has policy prohibiting tobacco use among students 
96.8% agree schools should have a policy prohibiting tobacco use among personnel 
46.5% report school has a policy prohibiting tobacco use among personnel 
99.6% report school enforces policies on tobacco use for students and personnel  
 
Access to Teaching Materials and Training  
92.4% think teachers need specific training to help students avoid tobacco use 
30.8% teachers have access to teaching materials on tobacco use

   The Paraguay - Asuncion GSPS includes data on prevalence 
of cigarette and other tobacco use as well as information on 
attitudes on school policy toward tobacco use, access to 
teaching materials and training, and attitudes toward tobacco 
use.  These factors are components Paraguay - Asuncion could 
include in a comprehensive tobacco control program. 
 The Paraguay - Asuncion GSPS was a school-based survey 
of school personnel from the schools that participated in the 
2004 Paraguay - Asuncion GYTS. 
The GYTS was conducted in schools having students in grades 
7, 8 and 9.  For the GYTS, a two-stage cluster sample design was 
used to produce representative data for all of Paraguay - 
Asuncion.  At the first stage, schools were selected with 
probability proportional to enrollment size.  At the second stage, 
classes were randomly selected and all students in selected 
classes were eligible to participate.  The school response rate was 
100.0%.  For the GSPS, 16.3% of the school personnel 
completed the survey, for a total of 264 teachers and 
administrators. 
 
Prevalence of Tobacco Use among School Personnel 
 
42.9% ever smoked cigarettes (Admin = 50.0%, Teachers = 42.2%) 
13.7% currently use any tobacco product (Admin = 8.3%, Teachers = 14.3%) 
13.1% currently smoke cigarettes (Admin = 8.3%, Teachers = 13.7%) 
5.7% currently use other tobacco products (Admin = 0.0%, Teachers = 6.3%) 
6.1% smoked on school property in the past year (Admin = 4.2%, Teachers = 6.3%)  
 
School Policies Prohibiting Tobacco Use 
 
98.1% agree schools should have policy prohibiting tobacco use among students 
63.8% report school has policy prohibiting tobacco use among students

The Bosnia and Herzegovina nursing students GHPSS includes 
data on prevalence of cigarette smoking and use of other tobacco 
products, knowledge and attitudes about tobacco use, exposure 
to second-hand smoke, desire for smoking cessation, and 
training received during nursing school regarding patient 
counseling on smoking cessation techniques.  This information 
could be very useful in monitoring and developing Bosnia and 
Herzegovina’s comprehensive tobacco control program.   
 
 
The Bosnia and Herzegovina nursing students GHPSS was a 
sample of 3
rd
 year nursing students attending the 15 nursing 
schools in Bosnia and Herzegovina that was conducted in 2005.  
The school response rate was 100% and the student response rate 
was 86.0%.  A total of 855 students participated in the Bosnia and 
Herzegovina nursing students GHPSS. 
Prevalence 
 
66.3% ever smoked cigarettes (Males = 63.8%, Females = 67.1%) 
33.0% currently smoke cigarettes (Males = 27.3%, Females = 34.8%) 
12.0% ever used any form of tobacco other than cigarettes (Males = 19.8%, 
Females = 9.2%) 
5.5% currently use any form of tobacco other than cigarettes (Males = 7.0%, 
Females = 5.0%) 
29.5% of ever smokers smoked on school premises/property during the past year. 
19.1% of ever smokers smoked in school buildings during the past year. 
 
Factors Influencing Tobacco Use  
 
77.1% were exposed to second-hand smoke at home, during the past week. 
85.7% were exposed to second-hand smoke in public places during the past 
week. 
44.2% reported that their school had a ban on smoking in school buildings and 
clinics. 
63.8% reported that their school enforced the ban on smoking in school buildings 
and clinics. 
78.4% thought smoking should be banned in all enclosed public places. 
82.8% thought tobacco sales to adolescents should be banned. 
65.1% thought there should be a complete ban on advertising tobacco products. 
52.3% of current smokers wanted to stop smoking. 
74.2% of current smokers ever received help/advice to stop smoking cigarettes. 
78.2% were taught about the dangers of smoking during nursing school training. 
 
Role Model and Cessation Training 
 
71.5% thought health professionals serve as role models for their patients. 
28.6% received formal training in smoking cessation approaches during nursing 
school. 
90.3% thought health professionals should get specific training on cessation 
techniques.

The Republic of Moldova pharmacy students GHPSS includes 
data on prevalence of cigarette smoking and use of other tobacco 
products, knowledge and attitudes about tobacco use, exposure 
to second-hand smoke, desire for smoking cessation, and 
training received during pharmacy school regarding patient 
counseling on smoking cessation techniques.  This information 
could be very useful in monitoring and developing the Republic 
of Moldova’s comprehensive tobacco control program.   
 
 
The Republic of Moldova pharmacy students GHPSS was a

 year pharmacy students attending the 2 pharmacy 
schools in the Republic of Moldova that was conducted in 2008.  
The school response rate was 100% and the student response rate 
was 95.9%.  A total of 46 students participated in the Republic of 
Moldova pharmacy students GHPSS. 
Prevalence 
 
56.3% ever smoked cigarettes (Males = 79.7%, Females = 49.4%) 
30.2% currently smoke cigarettes (Males = 38.1%, Females = 27.7%) 
16.5% ever used any form of tobacco other than cigarettes (Females = 12.0%) 
6.4% currently use any form of tobacco other than cigarettes (Males = 17.4%, 
Females = 2.8%) 
22.4% of ever smokers smoked on school premises/property during the past year. 
8.4% of ever smokers smoked in school buildings during the past year. 
 
Factors Influencing Tobacco Use  
 
70.0% were exposed to second-hand smoke at home, during the past week. 
71.0% were exposed to second-hand smoke in public places during the past 
week. 
33.2% reported that their school had a ban on smoking in school buildings and 
clinics. 
85.4% reported that their school enforced the ban on smoking in school buildings 
and clinics. 
91.3% thought smoking should be banned in all enclosed public places.
