The Swaziland GSPS includes data on prevalence of cigarette 
and other tobacco use as well as information on attitudes on 
school policy toward tobacco use, access to teaching materials 
and training, and attitudes toward tobacco use.  These factors 
are components Swaziland could include in a comprehensive 
tobacco control program. 
 The Swaziland GSPS was a school-based survey of school 
personnel from the schools that participated in the 2005 
Swaziland GYTS. 
The GYTS was conducted in schools having students in forms 1, 
2, 3, 4 and 5.  For the GYTS, a two-stage cluster sample design 
was used to produce representative data for all of Swaziland.  At 
the first stage, schools were selected with probability 
proportional to enrollment size.  At the second stage, classes 
were randomly selected and all students in selected classes were 
eligible to participate.  The school response rate was 98.3%.  For 
the GSPS, 42.0% of the school personnel completed the survey, 
for a total of 661 teachers and administrators. 
Prevalence of Tobacco Use among School Personnel 
 
25.4% ever smoked cigarettes (Admin = 50.7%, Teachers = 21.9%) 
12.9% currently use any tobacco product (Admin = 42.0%, Teachers = 8.9%) 
11.1% currently smoke cigarettes (Admin = 37.4%, Teachers = 7.5%) 
7.3% currently use other tobacco products (Admin = 41.7%, Teachers = 2.6%) 
7.6% smoked on school property in the past year (Admin = 39.5%, Teachers = 3.2%)

The Costa Rica medical students GHPSS includes data on 
prevalence of cigarette smoking and use of other tobacco 
products, knowledge and attitudes about tobacco use, exposure 
to second-hand smoke, desire for smoking cessation, and 
training received during medical school regarding patient 
counseling on smoking cessation techniques.  This information 
could be very useful in monitoring and developing Costa Rica’s 
comprehensive tobacco control program.   
 
 
The Costa Rica medical students GHPSS was a census of 3
rd
 year 
medical students attending the 7 medical schools in Costa Rica 
conducted in 2006.  The school response rate was 100% and the 
student response rate was 100%.  A total of 279 students 
participated in the Costa Rica medical students GHPSS. 
Prevalence 
 
72.3% ever smoked cigarettes (Males = 75.7%, Females = 70.9%) 
32.8% currently smoke cigarettes (Males = 38.6%, Females = 29.3%) 
31.4% ever used any form of tobacco other than cigarettes (Males = 38.8%, 
Females = 26.2%) 
13.7% currently use any form of tobacco other than cigarettes (Males = 19.2%, 
Females = 10.7%) 
38.9% of ever smokers smoked on school premises/property during the past year. 
21.3% of ever smokers smoked in school buildings during the past year. 
 
Factors Influencing Tobacco Use  
 
45.9% were exposed to second-hand smoke at home, during the past week. 
87.7% were exposed to second-hand smoke in public places during the past 
week. 
69.9% reported that their school had a ban on smoking in school buildings and 
clinics. 
75.3% reported that their school enforced the ban on smoking in school buildings 
and clinics. 
86.7% thought smoking should be banned in all enclosed public places. 
94.6% thought tobacco sales to adolescents should be banned. 
68.4% thought there should be a complete ban on advertising tobacco products. 
65.6% of current smokers wanted to stop smoking. 
48.8% of current smokers ever received help/advice to stop smoking cigarettes. 
91.4% were taught about the dangers of smoking during medical school training. 
 
Role Model and Cessation Training

participate.  The school response rate was 83.3%.  For the GSPS, 
78.7% of the school personnel completed the survey, for a total of 
214 teachers & administrators.

techniques.  This information could be very useful in

tobacco control program.   
The Zambia Nursing students GHPSS was a census of 3rd 
year Nursing students attending the 12 Nursing schools in 
Zambia that was conducted in 2009.  A total of 414 3rd year 
students participated in the Zambia Nursing students 
GHPSS. The overall response rate of all Nursing students 
surveyed was 90.0%. 
Prevalence 
33.1% ever smoked cigarettes (Males = 52.3%, Females = 25.3%) 
5.5% currently smoke cigarettes (Males = 10.0%, Females = 3.8%) 
30.6% ever used any form of tobacco other than cigarettes (Males = 36.7%, 
Females = 28.2%)

attitudes on school policy toward tobacco use, access to 
teaching materials and training, and attitudes toward tobacco 
use.  These factors are components Zimbabwe - Harare could 
include in a comprehensive tobacco control program. 
 The Zimbabwe - Harare GSPS was a school-based survey of 
school personnel from the schools that participated in the 2008 
Zimbabwe - Harare GYTS.  
The GYTS was conducted in schools having students in grade 7 
and forms 1 through 3.  For the GYTS, a two-stage cluster sample 
design was used to produce representative data for all of 
Zimbabwe - Harare.  At the first stage, schools were selected with 
probability proportional to enrollment size.  At the second stage, 
classes were randomly selected and all students in selected classes 
were eligible to participate.  The school response rate was 
100.0%.  For the GSPS, 15.9% of the school personnel completed 
the survey, for a total of 233 teachers & administrators. 
Prevalence of Tobacco Use among School Personnel 
 
16.7% ever smoked cigarettes (Admin =45.5%, Teachers = 15.2%) 
6.0% currently use any tobacco product (Teachers = 5.0%) 
6.2% currently smoke cigarettes and pipes (Admin = 27.3%, Teachers = 5.1%) 
3.1% currently use other tobacco products including Mbanje (Teachers = 3.3%) 
5.6% smoked on school property in the past year (Admin = 9.1%, Teachers = 5.4%) 
 
School Policies Prohibiting Tobacco Use
