Integrated geological study in an offshore renewable energy test site: a case from the Basque continental shelf (Bay of Biscay, Spain)

    No full text
[EN]Testing and research centres for offshore renewable energy, exemplified by facilities like BIMEP (Biscay Marine Energy Platform) on the Basque coast of Spain, play a crucial role in driving the energy transition. This study utilises pre-existing data at the facility site, such as high-resolution bathymetry and granulometric information from sediment samples, to conduct a comprehensive geological analysis including both sedimentary and rocky seabed. A litho-structural analysis is presented, including a lithological prediction for the continental shelf, the recognition of the main structures, such as NW-trending folds and predominantly NE-SW oriented fractures, and a detailed fracture analysis. Sedimentary seabeds are analysed through a Seabed Sediment Map, illustrating a granulometry-based NE-SW oriented banded distribution. Bedforms are also studied, they are asymmetric and mainly oriented NE-SW. The Seabed Sediment Map and the bedform analysis reveal the effect of an SE-directed bottom current as the main mechanism controlling sediment mobility. This current matches with the predominant swell from the NW and with the direction of the most energetic waves in the area. This approach could serve as a methodological example, offering a cost-effective means for the preliminary geological characterisation of offshore energy sites, and is crucial for establishing a baseline (‘zero state’) before the deployment. This baseline is essential for evaluating and mitigating the impact of new infrastructure on sediment dynamics, which subsequently affects the overall functioning and health of the marine ecosystem. This work was supported by project PID2022-136948NB-100/AEI/https://doi.org/10.13039/501100011033/FEDER, UE (Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation), project GIU23/003 (University of the Basque Country, UPV/EHU), project EUSK22/05 (Euskampus Fundazioa) and project EUSK22/09 (Euskampus Fundazioa)

In the well-known boom of so-called trash TV in Spain, the television program 'Sálvame' occupies a prominent place due to its ability to lead the audience for a considerable time. Beyond the frivolous information it offers, it is characterized by its capacity to be a self-aware product that showcases the qualities of reality representation. In 'Sálvame,' there is, therefore, an intersection of the fictional both in the themes and in its treatment.; En el conocido fenómeno de la llamada telebasura en España, el programa televisivo “Sálvame” ocupa un lugar destacado por su capacidad de liderar la audiencia durante un buen tiempo.

Uncovering longitudinal changes in the brain functional connectome along the migraine cycle: a multilevel clinical connectome fngerprinting framework

Published on: 11 February 2025Background Changes in large-scale brain networks have been reported in migraine patients, but it remains unclear how these manifest in the various phases of the migraine cycle. Case-control fMRI studies spanning the entire migraine cycle are lacking, precluding a complete assessment of brain functional connectivity in migraine. Such stud ies are essential for understanding the inherent changes in the brain of migraine patients as well as transient changes along the cycle. Here, we leverage the concept of functional connectome (FC) fngerprinting, whereby individual subjects may be identifed based on their FC, to investigate changes in FC and its stability across diferent phases of the migraine cycle. Methods We employ a case-control longitudinal design to study a group of 10 patients with episodic menstrual or menstrual-related migraine without aura, in the 4 phases of their spontaneous migraine cycle (preictal, ictal, postic tal, interictal), and a group of 14 healthy controls in corresponding phases of the menstrual cycle, using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). We propose a novel multilevel clinical connectome fngerprinting approach to analyse the FC identifability not only within-subject, but also within-session and within-group. Results This approach allowed us to obtain individual FC fngerprints by reconstructing the data using the frst 19 principal components to maximize identifability at all levels. We found decreased FC identifability for patients in the preictal phase relative to controls, which increased with the progression of the attack and became comparable to controls in the interictal phase. Using Network-Based Statistic analysis, we found increased FC strength across sev eral brain networks for patients in the ictal and postictal phases relative to controls. Conclusion Our novel multilevel clinical connectome fngerprinting approach captured FC variations along the migraine cycle in a case-control longitudinal study, bringing new insights into the cyclic nature of the disorder. This work was supported by LARSyS FCT funding [DOI: https://doi.org/10. 54499/LA/P/0083/2020, https://doi.org/10.54499/UIDP/50009/2020, and https://doi.org/10.54499/UIDB/50009/2020], PRR project Center for Respon sible AI [grant C645008882-00000055] and FCT [grants PD/BD/150356/2019, PTDC/EMD-EMD/29675/2017, LISBOA-01-0145-FEDER-029675

Mechanisms of convective storm initiation on Jupiter and Saturn

    No full text
In the atmospheres of giant planets such as Jupiter and Saturn, huge convective storms occasionally develop which can change the visual appearance of the planets’ entire bands. These storms occur when the atmosphere’s water vapor rises and cools, releasing energy and making less dense the ascending air. However, in the helium and hydrogen atmospheres, the moist air is denser than the dry air, making convection more difficult to initiate. As water vapor is located in the deep levels of the atmosphere tens of kilometers below the upper clouds, the details around the formation of the convective storms are unknown. This Master’s Thesis runs numerical simulations of Jupiter and Saturn convective storms using an existing numerical model developed in the Planetary Sciences Group at UPV/EHU. The specific objective of this work is to investigate alternatives to moist convective initialization beyond classical warm bubbles perturbations

Determining the Ground Reaction Force Value and Location for Each Foot During Bipedal Stance Exercises from a Single Forceplate

    No full text
In the study of biomechanical models, balance represents a complex problem due to the issue of indeterminate forces while standing. In order to solve this problem, it is essential to measure the ground reaction forces (GRFs) applied to each foot independently. The present work proposes a methodology for determining the independent GRF applied to each foot while standing when only one forceplate is available. For this purpose, an analytical method is proposed to determine the distribution of vertical GRFs and the position of the independent center of pressure (CoP) in each foot. Concurrently, several neural network (NN) models are trained to improve the results obtained. This hypothesis is experimentally validated by a self-developed device that allows one to simultaneously obtain the vertical GRF and CoP location of each foot at the same time that the GRF and the global CoP location are obtained from a single forceplate. The results obtained achieve a CoP position error of less than 8% and a vertical force error of 2%. The analytical hypothesis is demonstrated to offer a satisfactory level of precision, while the NN is shown to result in considerable improvement in some cases. The authors would like to thank the funds received for the project PID2023-150982OB-I00 funded by MCIU/AEI /10.13039/501100011033/FEDER, EU, and the project 2018222013 funded by the Basque Government.
