Intercooperation and open innovation: Unleashing cooperative firms’ innovation potential

    Get PDF
This research examines how interorganizational cooperation impacts the innovation performance of cooperative firms. Existing literature asserts that there are limitations in the innovation capabilities of cooperatives. This study seeks to challenge that assumption and explore whether the nature of such firms enhances their cooperation with various stakeholders, enabling them to obtain better innovation outcomes. Based on data from 718 manufacturing establishments in the Basque Country (Spain), 57 of them cooperatives, regression analyses show that the cooperative nature of firms interacts positively and significantly with cooperation with universities and research centres. Such open innovation practices enable cooperatives to obtain competitive advantages in new-to-firm innovations and competitive parity in new-to-market innovations. Moreover, our findings highlight that cooperative firms invest significantly more in external R&D activities and cooperate more to innovate with more diverse stakeholders. These results underline the importance of intercooperation and open innovation policies for cooperatives and highlight the advantages of strengthening networks between various institutions to foster innovation performance. The State Programme for the Promotion of Scientific and Technical Research of Excellence/Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness [Refs. Exposure to second-language accent prompts recalibration of phonemic categories

    Get PDF
Published on 6th March. We examine how first language (L1) Spanish listeners with varying levels of experience with English recalibrate their phonemic category boundaries following exposure to second language (L2), American- English-accented Spanish. Specifically, we examine changes to voice onset time (VOT) boundaries, which are often positively-shifted when produced by American-English-accented Spanish speakers (as compared to L1 Spanish speakers). Our results demonstrate that listeners make adjustments to their phonemic category boundaries following exposure to accented words with the critical sounds in onset position (e.g., “bailar” and “parir”, meaning “to dance” and “to give birth”, for the /b/ and /p/ phonemic categories). In many cases generalization of phonemic learning was also observed, such that boundaries for categories that were not presented in training were also adjusted. Surprisingly, however, there were cases in which boundaries for trained categories did not show adjustments; for example, listeners trained with items for all places of articulation (POAs) showed recalibration of their bilabial and alveolar boundaries but not their velar boundary. Also notable was the role of the Spanish listeners' experience with English: More experienced listeners showed more positively-shifted (English-like) boundaries in the pre-test session. This suggests that more experienced listeners may have rapidly identified the American- English-accented Spanish and applied their English category boundaries accordingly. We conclude that listener accommodation of L2 accent is supported by a phonemic recalibration mechanism, and that experience with the L1 of an L2-accented speaker facilitates rapid recalibration of phonemic categories. This work was supported by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant agreement No. 101103964, the Basque Government through the BERC 2022-2025 program, and the Spanish State Research Agency through BCBL Severo Ochoa excellence accreditation CEX2020-001010-S

Additive manufacturing of methacrylated vinylogous urethane-based vitrimers

    No full text
242 p.The search for alternatives to conventional polymers has led to the appearance of Covalent Adaptable Networks (CANs). The advantage of this type of materials is the combination of the benefits of thermoplastics and thermosets. In this work a methacrylated vinylogous urethane vitrimer, which follows an associative mechanism, is studied in the context of additive manufacturing. In a first place, the developed material was processed by vat photopolymerization, obtaining 3D objects with well resolution. On the other hand, the synthesis of vitrimer powder was carried out, obtaining polymer particles capable of being sintered in powder bed fusion (PBF) technique. For processing particles with this last technique, a laser set-up, which contains a laser, has been developed in order to study the coalescence of the material. In addition, the rheological behaviour of this novel material has been studied. For the 3D objects obtained in vat photopolymerization classical stress relaxation tests were carried out in order to determine the dynamic behaviour. In contrast, an exhaustive rheological study was carried out for the vitrimer powder particles, for studying the influence of the topological freeze transition (Tv) in the relaxation process of the networ

Software protection of GFM inverters under grid faults

    No full text
With the increasing penetration of inverter-based resources, grid forming (GFM) inverters have emerged as a promising solution to maintain grid stability. These can provide ancillary services traditionally delivered by synchronous generators, such as inertia, frequency regulation or black-start capability. However, the voltage-source behaviour of GFM inverters, combined with the limited overcurrent capacity of power electronics, makes these devices susceptible to harmful overcurrents during faults, posing challenges to their low voltage ride-through (LVRT) performance. This work first examines the current regulatory framework of GFM inverters from LVRT perspective, highlighting regulatory gaps and emphasizing the need of a uniform definition. Then, a comprehensive review of software protections for limiting the fault current of GFM inverters is carried out. The performance of these strategies in terms of self-protection capability, fault current contribution and synchronization are compared. The paper emphasizes the need for further research and the development of a comprehensive regulatory framework. This will ensure the seamless integration of GFM inverters into future power grids, both under normal conditions and during fault scenarios. The authors gratefully acknowledge the Basque Country Government (GISEL research group IT1522). Application of niocarbosome based nonviral vectors to face cystic fibrosis by a gene therapy approach

    No full text

From teaching for war to acknowledging vulnerability: A cartography of gender and mistake-handling in mathematics education

    Get PDF
This paper looks at the impact of gender on the way mistakes are managed in mathematics education. It first describes the historical interweaving of error, mathematics and gender. Subsequently, using microsociology based on a feminist and socio-constructivist paradigm, it documents and analyses both practicing and trainee mathematics teachers’ experiences of error. We identify the effects of hegemonic masculinity on contexts of mathematical teaching and learning. With respect to mistake-handling related experiences, this manifests as competitiveness and aggressiveness, which have significant ramifications for student participation, particularly in the case of women. In response, we propose metacognition assisted solving of problems with a low floor and a high ceiling as means to move away from mathematics education for war towards the recognition of vulnerabilit

Backshoring's implications on sustainability: an SDG based review using Orbea's case study

    Get PDF
In today’s ever-changing global economic environment, companies have already been offshored for many decades. However, less attention has been paid to the opposite phenomenon, which has been rising in popularity for a while. This paper focuses on current backshoring tendencies. It examines the diverse implications of firm location and backshoring processes’ ramifications on different layers of sustainability. In addition, it includes consumers’ perspectives in the spirit of developing a comprehensive study with more relevant conclusions. In order to observe the impacts on the distinct sustainability dimensions, Sustainable Development Goals were chosen as a metric. Through their targets and indicators, unequal repercussions of reshoring processes can be quantitatively measured, though their accuracy will be questioned. Lastly, this document includes the case study of bike seller and manufacturer company Orbea, which in 2016 closed its facilities in Kunshan, China, after moving there 6 years prior. The various sources of information consulted, as well as the interview achieved with its Deputy Corporate Director Jon Fernández provide a deeper understanding of backshoring processes and backshoring impacts on sustainabilit

Ziurgabetasunak eragindako arriskuaren neurketa: Europako energia sektorearen analisia

    Get PDF
[eus] Lan honetan, krisi garaietan ziurgabetasunak Europako energia-sektoreko enpresa nagusien errentagarritasunean nola eragiten duen aztertu dugu. 2008ko krisiaren ostean, ziurgabetasunari loturiko arriskua neurtzeak garrantzia bereganatu zuen, finantza-sisteman sor ditzakeen ezusteko ondorioak kontrolaezinak nahiz larriak izan zitezkeela ohartu baitziren. Helburua lortzeko arrisku-balioa (VaR) aztertzen da, modu estatikoan, zein dinamikoan, finantza-aldagaien banaketak denboran zehar aldatzen baitira. Gainera, EPU (Politika Ekonomikoaren Ziurgabetasunaren indizea), VSTOXX (Euro Stoxx 50en Hegazkortasun indizea) eta OVX (CBOE Petrolio Gordinaren Hegazkortasun indizea) indizeez baliatu gara, akzio merkatuek jaso ditzaketen ziurgabetasun ezberdinen adierazle gisa. Analisiak erakusten du ziurgabetasunak, oro har, eragin negatiboa duela energia-enpresen errentagarritasunetan, eta are inpaktu handiagoa krisi testuinguruetan. Beraz, arriskuaren kudeaketa dinamikoa eta zorrotza funtsezkoa dela nabarmendu beharra dago.[eng] In this work, we analyze how uncertainty during times of crisis influences the profitability of the main companies in the European energy sector. After the 2008 crisis, the measurement of risk associated with uncertainty became more important, as it became evident that the unpredictable consequences it could generate in the financial system could be both uncontrollable and severe. The value at risk (VaR) is analyzed to achieve the objective, both statically and dynamically, since financial variable distributions vary over time. In addition, we used the EPU (Economic Policy Uncertainty Index), VSTOXX (Euro Stoxx 50 Volatility Index), and OVX (CBOE Crude Oil Volatility Index) as indicators of the different uncertainties faced by equity markets. The analysis shows that uncertainty in general has a negative impact on the returns of energy companies, with an even greater impact during crisis contexts. Therefore, dynamic and rigorous risk management is essential
