Cross-modal interactions in language production: evidence from word learning
Published online 9 August 2024Literate adults are able to produce the same word in different language modalities—for instance, through speaking and writing. Yet how speaking and writing interact is not well understood. The present study takes a new perspective on the question of the co-activation of phonological and orthographic representations in speaking and writing by examining the acquisition of novel words. We tested how novel words get integrated into modality-specific lexicons by biasing novel word acquisition toward speaking or writing and assessing cross-modal transfer at the first stages of learning. Participants learned novel words paired with pictures of novel objects and practiced them overtly through speaking or typing. At test, typed training led to higher recall accuracy than spoken training whether words were recalled through typing or speaking. Performance in typing (RT and durations) benefited more from typed than spoken training. Crucially, performance in speaking did not benefit specifically from spoken training and was similar after spoken or typed training. Results are compatible with an asymmetric integration in the phonological and orthographic lexicons according to the modality of training, with representations created in the orthographic lexicon directly transferring to the phonological lexicon, while the opposite doesn’t seem to occur. Cross-modal transfer dynamics are discussed according to the level of lexical activation. This research was supported by the Basque Government through the BERC 2022–2025 program and funded by the Spanish State Research Agency through BCBL Severo Ochoa excellence accreditation CEX2020-001010/AEI/https:// doi. org/ 10. 13039/ 50110 00110 33 and through project PID2020-113926 GB-I00/AEI/https:// doi. org/ 10. 13039/ 50110 00110 33. Essays on energy and climate change in Sub-Saharan Africa and Nigeria: evidence and impact
210 p.Climate change presents significant challenges globally, with Sub-Saharan Africa and Nigeria experiencing pronounced impacts such as temperature rise, changing rainfall patterns, and extreme weather events. This thesis investigates the relationship between climate variability, economic activity, oil prices and agricultural outcomes in Nigeria and Sub-Saharan Africa. Using advanced econometric models, fractional integration methods, and machine learning algorithms, the study reveals persistent warming trends over decades across Sub-Saharan Africa (especially in Southern and East Africa) and across Nigerian sub-nationals, especially during the post-WWII period (age of industrialization), nuanced economic effects of temperature anomalies, and the dominant role of temperature in predicting agricultural output. Nighttime lights data highlight climate variability's dynamic and inverted-U effects on sub-national economic activity across Nigerian sub-nationalities. The study also highlights that oil price shocks have limited direct influence on agricultural productivity, with broader macroeconomic factors like inflation and exchange rate volatility playing a more significant role. The findings emphasise the need for adaptive policies to address climate extremes, improve fiscal efficiency, and enhance resilience and sustainability through structural reforms and suggest using advanced modelling approaches for future studie

[EN] According to the German writer Juli Zeh, German society has bid farewell to systems of identification that unite it as a collective. Her thriller novel Unterleuten (2016), in which the homonymous village fails to live together in conviviality raises crucial questions about the collective ethics for the future. The article explores the question of how this novel, even with this starting point of convivialist failure, confronts the reader with principles of ethics for the future as a wishful projection of spaces of coexistence for future generations.Proyecto de investigación MINECO PID2021-125952NB-100

Shooting and goalkeepers response analysis in a professional football league.
Objective: The main aim of this descriptive study was to analyze the situations in which goalkeepers find themselves when receiving shots, in order to design more specific training methods.
Method: A total of 2238 shots have been analyzed in 15 goalkeepers belonging to 10 different teams, from 179 matches during the 2019–2020 La Liga season (First Spanish Football Division). The study was divided by two parts. In the first one, all data was analyzed with no grouping, and the second was divided in 4 groups based on final team position when the competition was finished (Top, Middle High, Middle Low and Bottom).
Results: From all the shots obtained, information has been analyzed on: temporality, the most repeated actions by the strikers and goalkeepers, separating the actions by different situations (direction, number of contacts, game situation, cross...), and the areas of the field in which the actions occur.
Conclusions: 1) First touch shots were the most dangerous given that the difficulty for defenders and goalkeepers to block and stop respectively; 2) The high percentage of deflected shots (17.6%) shows the importance of training them as they are difficult situations to analyze; 3) the more time the shooter spends preparing the shot, the more accurate it will be, but the more effective the goalkeeper’s action will also be; 4) Top teams use less set pieces and crosses, and they use to make more touches than the other groups to finish the plays
Experiencia mítica en la experiencia estética: La materialidad intangible
In mythical thought, poetry and plastic art are given in an immaterial way, in terms of the production of images and in the act of creation is gestated indefinitely in an eternal return and eloquence of the archetype. The relationship between freedom and necessity occurs in the linkage of the mythemes, as between art and nature, as Schelling had already postulated. Also as consciousness and non-consciousness of creation. In these relationships, encounters occur that generate beauty thus making the myth aesthetic and unfathomable, since it belongs to the psyche, to the divine. This beauty is generated in ethical choices, bringing it closer to the idea of good. The lack of hierophanies in art implies an artistic insignificance that brings it closer to the circumstantial than to the transcendental. These manifestations, more typical of an art attached to or absorbed by the current socio-political system, have lost their sacred character.
Software M code for exploring virus dynamics in multi-species systems
In recent decades, the global expansion of Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) aquaculture, driven by its adaptability and rapid growth, has coincided with the emergence of novel microvariants (vars) of the virulent Ostreid herpesvirus 1 (OsHV-1), causing significant industry losses. As a potential alternative, the American oyster (Crassostrea virginica) demonstrates lower susceptibility to 4OsHV-1. This study developed a transmission model for OsHV-1 in mixed oyster aquaculture systems, focusing on the impact of C. virginica introductions on transmission dynamics within established C. gigas systems. The model considers oyster growth, mortality, filtration, viral particle release, and environmental decay. Simulations, including monoculture and co-culture scenarios (10/90, 40/60, 50/50 proportions), were validated against experimental data. Results indicated that introducing C. virginica did not impede OsHV-1 progression; even in the 90/10 system, C. gigas mortality reached its maximum, albeit delayed by approximately 10 days. Co-culture scenarios did not provide a significant advantage for C. gigas, likely due to viral particle saturation in the water column. The model’s performance across diverse scenarios positions it as a valuable tool for understanding waterborne pathogen dynamics in mixed host-species systems, supporting investigations into aquaculture species introductions and their influence on disease dynamics
