Research background. Depressive mothers are less interested in the development of the infant and therefore have less knowledge about infant’s development. It can affect mother’s attitude towards the infant. Many sources state that a poor sense of coherence (SOC) is associated with increased stress, also SOC is one of the risk factors for depression. So, there is possibility that mother’s SOC can affect motor development of infant. The aim of the study was to evaluate relationship between subjective evaluation of maternal sense of coherence and infant motor development. Research methods. Forty-one mothers were surveyed by five questionnaires: sociodemographic block, Sense of Coherence Scale, Coherence with a baby scale, Daily hassles scale, and Alberta Infant Motor Scale, which was modified into a questionnaire to allow mothers independently evaluate their baby’s motor development. Research results. According to the study, mothers under severe stress had a statistically significant lower mean score of SOC (44.9 ± 7.89) compared to mothers who did not experience severe stress (49.9 ± 4.61) (p = 0.01). A strong correlation was observed between maternal sense of coherence and coherence with the baby (r = 0.72; p = 0.003). Subjective evaluation of infants’ motor development done by their mothers did not depend on the Sense of Coherence (r = 0.13; p = 0.14). There was no significant relationship between motor development of infants and maternal Sense of Coherence (r = 0.03; p = 0.40). Conclusion. Mothers with a strong sense of coherence also had strong coherence with the infant. Maternal Sense of Coherence had no statistically significant relationship with the baby’s motor development. Keywords: Sense of coherence, mother’s coherence with infant, postpartum depression, motor development.Tyrimo pagrindimas.

Background. The drive for muscularity in men is associated with a negative body image, psychosocial, and physiological outcomes. The aim of the present study was to test the psychometric properties of the Lithuanian version of the Drive for Muscularity Scale (DMS-LT) and associated characteristics in the sample of young adults (men).Methods. The sample consisted of 763 male students. The ages ranged from 18 to 32 years, with a mean age of 20.4 (SD = 3.1). Participants completed the Lithuanian translation of DMS-LT alongside with the measures of disordered eating, sociocultural attitudes towards appearance questionnaire, body mass index, self-esteem, and participation in sports.Results. The instrument showed good internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha = .92) and test-retest reliability (ICC = .87). The two-dimensional factor structure of the proposed original scale was not confirmed. DMS-LT was negatively correlated with self-esteem. Positive associations were observed between DMS-LT, muscular/athletic body ideal internalization, and disordered eating. Drive for muscularity attitudes and behaviors were more expressed in male students attending sports clubs.Conclusions. The results of the present study support the psychometric properties of the DMS-LT and its’ use in Lithuanian samples of young men. The instrument might also be used in clinical practice. It is important to develop prevention programs that decrease body image concerns and prevent disordered eating in young men. Keywords: drive for muscularity, body image, psychometric properties of the scale, students

Increased Exercise Effort after Artificially-Induced Stress: Laboratory-Based Evidence for the Catharsis Theory of Stress

    Get PDF
Background. Evolution prepared humans to deal with physical challenges. Today, people encounter psychosocial stress more than physical stress. However, the physiological response to the contemporary forms of stress is still preserved as the biological evolution’s vestigial heritage. This laboratory investigation aimed to determine whether brief mental stress triggers greater innate (instinctual) effort to ‘let off steam’ than a non-challenging control condition. Method. Using a counterbalanced within-participants laboratory design, 29 young men walked/jogged at voluntary (self-paced) effort after two conditions: a) artificially-induced mental stress comprised by the Stroop Color-Word Task, which lasted for five minutes, and b) a control session, also lasting for five minutes, in which the participants watched a video depicting the world’s ten tallest buildings. Results. The increased arousal after mental stress was carried over into the walk or jog period, and participants worked harder, but they did not perceive exerting greater effort in contrast to the control condition. Conclusions. These results suggest that a ‘flight or fight’ response to psychosocial stress is manifested in the form of subliminal catharsis. While larger-scale studies with more impactful stressors are needed, these preliminary results support the catharsis theory. They might open new research avenues to provide people more physical opportunities for letting off steam before the necessity of treatment with chemical substances or other behavioral therapies. Background. Early childhood traumas leave serious consequences: during adolescence and adulthood people often experience internal conflicts, more often suffer from mental and somatic diseases, so it is important to look for therapies that can neutralize or reduce the effects of early traumas. One of the options is to apply a complex of bibliotherapy and equine assisted therapy. However, there is a lack of studies analysing how these two therapies affect the development. The aim was to explore the influence of bibliotherapy and equine-assisted therapy on the emotions and behaviour of children with early trauma.Methods. Qualitative research used interview, observation, and projection techniques.Results. Bibliotherapy created preconditions for the emergence of repressed feelings and for deeper, more sensitive dialogue with the psychologist. Riding helped to relax, captured the attention of the present, strengthened positive emotions.Conclusions. 1. Equine – assisted therapy affects the body and gives positive emotions, reduces child’s inner anxiety, improves mood and consolidates bibliotherapy results. 2. The combination of bibliotherapy and equine – assisted therapy creates the conditions for stabilizing and even transforming the negative emotions of children with early trauma and restoring the fullness of childhood life. Keywords: psychological trauma, child development, emotions, horse assisted therapy, bibliotherapy.Tyrimo pagrindimas. 1. Arklio asistuojama terapija, daranti poveikį kūnui ir suteikianti teigiamų emocijų, mažina vaiko vidinį nerimą, pagerina nuotaiką, didina motyvaciją kalbėtis rūpimais klausimais, įtvirtina biblioterapijos metu ugdytų jausmų pažinimo, emocinės raiškos, kalbėjimo ir bendravimo gebėjimų bei įgūdžių rodiklius. 2. Biblioterapijos ir arklio asistuojamos terapijos derinimas sudaro prielaidas stabilizuoti ir netgi transformuoti ankstyvąsias traumas patyrusių vaikų neigiamas emocijas bei grąžinti vaikiško gyvenimo pilnatvę.Raktažodžiai:  psichologinės traumos, vaiko vystymasis, emocijos, arklio asistuojama terapija, biblioterapija

Research background. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) usually affects the hands and worsens the function of hand grasping. Studies show that strength exercises for the hands are known to improve hand grip and overall hand function in middle-aged people, but the effect of combining strength and stretching exercises remains unclear in the elderly with chronic (up to 10 years) RA. Research aim. To evaluate the effect of strength and stretching exercises on hand function for the elderly people with chronic rheumatoid arthritis. Research methods. Twenty subjects from 60 to 80 years of age were divided into two groups: a control group (n = 10; 1 man) who performed 20 minutes of conventional physiotherapy without additional strength and stretching exercises, and an experimental group (n = 10; 1 man), who performed 20 minutes of conventional physiotherapy with 30 minutes additional strength and stretching exercises for hands. The study lasted 5 weeks, twice a week. Measurements of hand function, wrist and palm joint volumes and pain were performed at the beginning and end of the study for all subjects. Research results. In both groups there was a statistically significant improvement in the functional condition of the hands according to the Keitel functional test and the amplitude of hand extension and flexion (p < 0.05). In the experimental group, after additional strength and stretching exercises, parameters (p < 0.05) improved statistically significantly. Comparing the two groups with each other after the intervention, there was a statistically significant improvement in hand functional parameters found in the experimental group after conventional strength and stretching exercises for the hands (p < 0.05). Conclusions. Strength and stretching exercises can improve hand functional parameters, reduce pain more effectively, than using only conventional physiotherapy for elderly people with RA. Keywords: rehabilitation, hand grip, chronic inflammatory joint disease.Tyrimo pagrindimas.

Background. It is becoming obvious that healthy lifestyle of students in higher education institutions is an important factor contributing to the duration of their professional career as well as for general health (Bolotin & Bakayev, 2015). High academic expectations increase tension and pose a threat to physical and mental health of students (Shamsuddin et al., 2013). During studies young people are more vulnerable to developing harmful habits, they do not follow proper nutrition, and do not look after their health (Tarejeva, Žagminas, & Serapinas, 2015), therefore, it is important to understand the association between lifestyle of a young person and daily perceived stress.Methods. The study included 155 students of the Lithuanian Sports University. In order to establish nutrition and harmful habits among students, the analysis of nutrition and harmful habits questionnaire was used. Physical activity of students was evaluated using the short version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ-LT). The analysis of stress was based on the questionnaire using the Stress in Academic Life Scale. The results were processed using methods of mathematical statistics. The statistical analysis of the data was performed using the SPSS software version 23.0.Results. Statistically significant difference of physical activity was determined between genders – females were more active than males (p < .05). The frequency of the consumption of breakfast, sweets, meat, beer, and wine statistically significantly differed between females and males (p < .05). Perceived stress of students was associated with physical activity, consumption of cereal grains, sweets, carbonated beverages, and smoking (p < .05).Conclusions. The majority of students were sufficiently physically active. Females more frequently had breakfast, consumed sweets, while males more frequently consumed meat. Regular breakfast consumption was reported by 88.6% of females and 73.1% of males. Males more frequently had intake of beer, while females – wine.
