Background. With the growing use of smart devices, concerns have also increased about musculoskeletal problems associated with the prolonged use of smart devices (Jung et al., 2016). Prolonged and frequent use of the smart device with the severe head flexion posture could be one of the main contributing factors to the prevalence of neck and shoulders pain symptoms of smart device users (Alfaitouri, Altaboli, 2019). Purpose – determine changes in the function of cervical spine of smart device users. Methods. Twenty-six individuals participated in the study (14 females, 12 males). Dependency on smart devices, active range of motion and muscle strength of cervical spine were evaluated for the participants. Results. Active flexion, extension, left and right lateral flexion, left and right rotation range of motion of cervical spine were significantly different between individuals who are at no risk for dependency (NPrR group), at high risk for dependency (DPrR group) and individuals that are dependent (Pr group) on using smart devices. Strength of cervical spine flexor muscles was significantly lower in Pr group than NPrR group (p < 0.05). Strength of neck flexor muscles in Pr group was 6.2 ± 2.5 kg, while in NPrR group it was 9.7 ± 4.1 kg. Conclusions. Individuals that have been using smart devices for over 3 years and have dependency on smart devices have significantly lower active range of motion of the neck and neck flexor muscle strength than individuals who are at no risk of the dependency and individuals at high risk of the dependency on smart devices. Keywords: smart devices, cervical spine, range of motion, muscles strength, function.Tyrimo pagrindimas. Augant išmaniųjų įrenginių naudojimui, padidėjo  susirūpinimas griaučių ir raumenų sistemos problemomis, susijusiomis su ilgalaikiu išmaniųjų įrenginių naudojimu (Jung et al., 2016). Ilgai trunkantis ir dažnas išmaniojo įrenginio naudojimas išlaikant stipriai į priekį palenktą galvos padėtį gali būti vienas iš pagrindinių veiksnių, lemiančių išmaniųjų įrenginių naudotojų lėtinį kaklo ir pečių lanko skausmą (Alfaitouri, Altaboli, 2019). Tikslas – nustatyti išmaniuosius įrenginius naudojančių asmenų kaklinės stuburo dalies funkcijos pokyčius. Metodai. Buvo tirti 26 asmenys (14 moterų, 12 vyrų). Įvertintas tiriamųjų priklausomumas nuo išmaniųjų įrenginių naudojimo, nustatyta kaklinės dalies aktyvių judesių amplitudė ir judesius atliekančių raumenų jėga. Rezultatai. Background. The aim of the research was to disclose the process of moral reasoning in bodybuilding: to reveal the features of bodybuilding sport (athletes’ goals, benefits of the sport and its costs), to find out the circumstances which can affect athletes’ moral decisions, to evaluate bodybuilding athletes’ moral reasoning strategies, and to reveal athletes’ most important moral decisions.Methods. The study employed qualitative research which involved eight bodybuilding athletes. The respondents were selected using the theoretical purposeful convenience sampling strategy. A semi-structured interview method was used to collect information.Results. Athletes’ goals in bodybuilding can be sports related (getting to know the sport, athletic achievements) or personal (moral and psychological toughness, personal improvement, self-realization, material benefits).  Bodybuilders benefit from the sport in physical (health and appearance improvement) and social (gained experience, self-realization) ways. The price of this sport is athletes’ hard work, large amounts of money, sacrificed personal life and deterioration of psychological and physical health. Moral reasoning can be influenced by positive circumstances (bodybuilding philosophy, internal beliefs, fighting against cheating, team spirit) and negative (ingrained misdemeanours in sport, corruption, flawed rating system, possibility to avoid responsibility, big price of winning, psychological pressure, inadequate goals). Athletes most often use rational moral reasoning strategies (regarding their beliefs, solution seeking, situational decisions, self-mobilization, setting options, relying on experience). Athletes more often make positive moral decisions (changing the trainer, following the rules, resisting pressure, moral behaviour) than negative (adapting to the situation, acting like the others, winning at any cost).Conclusions. Bodybuilders most often aim for personal goals. Bodybuilding provides its athletes with physical and social benefits. The price of this sport is bodybuilders’ hard work, large sums of money, sacrifice of personal life and health. Certain circumstances might influence athletes to make positive moral decisions while others might influence negative decisions. Bodybuilding athletes use two different moral reasoning strategies: rational or irrational. Bodybuilders’ more often make positive moral decisions, but negative decisions occur as well. Keywords: morality, moral reasoning, bodybuilding

The Importance of Physical Activity in the Interaction of Motor and Cognitive Functions in Elderly People

    Get PDF
Background. It is predicted that in 2060, the number of elderly people in Lithuania (62 and over years of age) will be 31.2% (Tamutienė & Naujanienė, 2013). The maintenance of stable posture requires particular attention because it gets more difficult to sustain it while doing multiple moves at the same time when you are getting older (Woo, Davids, Liukkonen, Chow, & Jaakkola, 2017). The aim of the study was to determine the importance of physical activity for the interplay of motor and cognitive functions in elderly people. Methods. Evaluation of static equilibrium by posturographic method, evaluation of cognitive functions, statistical analysis. Results. The results of the physically active and inactive research subjects were statistically significant (p = .043) in memory task with the eyes closed and in a simple position. A statistically significant difference in the sway velocity (Vsc) between the physical activity groups with eyes closed in simple position was also observed (p = .044). Double task with eyes closed resulted in worse balance performance. Conclusions. 1. Physical activity did not affect the motor function of the elderly. There were no differences between the physically active and inactive subjects in the assessed behavioral indices. 2. Physical activity did not affect the cognitive functions of the elderly. All elderly subjects were equally mistaken in their cognitive memory task. 3. The motor functions of the physically active elderly are controlled statistically significantly better when performing additional cognitive tasks than those of the physically inactive ones. Mothers’ Physical Activity in the New Millennium: A Systematic Review of the Literature

    Get PDF
Background. Physical activity is essential for health, especially in an increasingly sedentary world. Being a parent involves responsibilities that could interfere with mothers’ physical activity. Research suggests that mothers are especially vulnerable to physical inactivity. Health promoters invest substantial effort in facilitating the physical activity of women with children. Methods. The scope of this systematic literature review is to synthesize research efforts on mothers’ physical activity and supporting interventions. Three databases were scrutinized in this review (Medline, Scopus, and PsycINFO). Articles published between 2000–2020 were selected in concordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis (PRISMA). Fifty-four eligible articles were included after screening 3708 articles. Results. The results suggest that mothers exhibit lower levels of physical activity than the recommended level for adults. Lack of time, focus on childcare, limited knowledge, and insufficient spousal support emerge as the primary barriers to physical activity in mothers with children. Interventions trying to overcome these barriers vary in methods, evaluations, and effectiveness. Positive changes in mothers’ physical activity may emerge if interventions focus on increasing self-efficacy, problem-solving, goal setting, and other cognitive factors. Conclusion. Future interventions integrating internet-based applications and involving spouses and/or partners might help mothers to increase their physical activity. Possible Factors Affecting Pre-School Children\u27s Irregular Posture Formation

    Get PDF
Background. A review of the health and physical activity of children and teenagers in Lithuania over the last twenty years has shown that many aspects of pupil physical capacity have deteriorated between 1992 and 2012 (Venckunas, Emeljanovas, Mieziene, & Volbekiene, 2017). Also research has shown that musculoskeletal disorders were most commonly found in children aged 4 to 6 years (Daniusevičiutė-Brazaitė & Grėbliauskienė, 2019). Therefore, if these negative trends continue, the growing health problems will pose a greater threat to human well-being and become a serious financial burden for the state and society. Currently technologies are an integral part of everyday life, so the need for interactive games or animated programs cannot be doubted. Research (Lobel, Engels, Stone, Burk, & Granic, 2017) has shown that the use of play-based intervention for children significantly improves fine and visual motor performance. Hence, it is important to identify the possible factors affecting pre-school children’s irregular posture formation. Methods. The study included 377 preschool children from 4 to 6 years old. Three evaluations were performed in the study: posture (using W. K. Hoeger posture assessment methodology), abdominal and back muscle endurance, and balance (Arcinavičius,, Kesminas, & Milčarek, 2004). Results. Assessing the results of the shoulder position of 5-year-old children, results showed that only 16% had good shoulder posture, satisfactory – 74%, bad – 10%. Age was found to have no effect on posture assessment results. According to the study, balance, back, and abdominal functional capacity were better in 6-year-old children. Conclusion. After analyzing 4-year old children group torso, abdomen, lower spine and legs, we can see that a higher percentage of children had a satisfactory posture in the aforementioned body parts. According to the posture results, the most abnormal part of the body was the abdomen. The study data showed that 6-year-old subjects’ balance, lower spine and abdominal performance were better compared to other age groups. Keywords: preschool child, physical activity, posture

Background. Most physiotherapists are not involved in this problem and correlations are very weak. Therefore, it is considered that in the presence of an irregular dental clench of the subjects, limited movements of the TMJ, lower cross syndrome should also be detected and different physiotherapy methodologies will be found to be positive indicators alteration of functional disorders of the TMJ and lower cross syndrome. The formation of irregular posture affects people who complain of low back pain. Relationship between dental clench and posture is a basis for discussion on the inclusion of diagnosis and treatment in the assessment of postural changes in individuals with irregular clench and dysfunction of the TMJ. The purpose was to determine the effect of different physiotherapy methodologies on pain and functional status in persons with dysfunction of the TMJ and lower cross syndrome. Methods. Only breathing, stabilization, motor control and stretching exercises are applied to group I. Breathing, stabilization, motor control and stretching exercises together with TMJ mobilization and chewing muscle recognition technique are applied to group II. We evaluated the active function of the TMJ and dental clench as well as the lumbar spine and pelvic position before and after different physical therapy methods. Results. Only the exercise program of different types applied for four weeks did not affect the tendency changes in the evaluated indicators, the statistical significance was not determined (p > 0.05). For the group treated with different types of exercises in combination with TMJ mobilization and chewing muscle relaxation technique, a tendency in the change of indicators was observed, but the statistical significance was not determined (p > 0.05). Conclusion. The function of the TMJ and dental clench, the function of the lumbar spine and pelvic position after different physical therapy methods statistical significance did not change. Keywords: TMJ, functional disorders, lower cross syndrome, physical therapy.Tyrimo pagrindimas. Dauguma kineziterapeutų, į kuriuos kreipiasi ligoniai, kol kas nėra susipažinę su smilkininio apatinio žandikaulio sąnario (SAŽS) funkciniais sutrikimais, netaisyklingo sąkandžio ir kūno laikysenos pokyčiais bei tarpusavio ryšio problema. Netaisyklinga laikysena turi įtakos asmenims, besiskundžiantiems juosmeninės stuburo dalies (JSD) skausmu, o dantų sąkandžio ir kūno laikysenos tarpusavio ryšys – tai pagrindas diskusijai apie diagnostikos ir gydymo įtraukimą, įvertinus asmenų, turinčių netaisyklingą sąkandį ir SAŽS funkcinių sutrikimų, kūno laikysenos pokyčius (Rodriguez-Blanco et al., 2015). Tikslas – nustatyti skirtingų kineziterapijos metodikų poveikį asmenų, turinčių smilkininio apatinio žandikaulio sąnario funkcinių sutrikimų ir apatinį kryžminį sindromą, skausmui ir funkcinei būklei. Metodai. Background. Studies have found that spinal stabilization exercises improve lumbar deep muscle function and reduce back pain. Spinal mobilization and manipulation reduce disability and pain in the treatment of chronic back pain. However, there are not enough studies to show a greater or lesser effect of different manual therapies in the treatment of lower back pain.             Research aim was to determine the effect of different manual therapy methods and spinal stabilization exercises on pain and functional status in individuals experiencing lower back pain.             Methods. The study included 18 subjects experiencing chronic nonspecific lower back pain. The subjects were randomly divided into two groups. One group underwent spinal vertebral mobilization with movement (sustained natural apophyseal glides – SNAG’s) and spinal stabilization exercises, and the other group underwent non-specific lumbar spine manipulation and spinal stabilization exercises. Before and after the intervention back pain (SAS), functional status and disability, abdominal muscle static endurance, back muscle static endurance, lateral trunk muscle static endurance, and spine mobility were assessed.             Results. All subjects had statistically significant (p < 0.05) changes in results related with pain, disability and functional status, lumbar spine mobility, and lumbar muscle static endurance, comparing them before and after the intervention. The results of the study before and after the intervention did not differ significantly between the groups.             Conclusion. Spine mobilization with movement and core stability exercises as well as non-specific lumbar-sacral spine manipulation and core stability exercises were found to reduce low back pain and improve functional status; the effects did not differ between different manual therapy methods.             Keywords: low back pain, spinal stabilization exercises, manual therapy.Tyrimo pagrindimas. Metodai. Buvo tiriama 18 asmenų, jaučiančių lėtinį nespecifinį nugaros apatinės dalies skausmą. Atsitiktine tvarka tiriamieji suskirstyti į dvi grupes. Vienai grupei buvo taikoma stuburo slankstelių mobilizacija atliekant judesį ir stuburo stabilizavimo pratimai, kitai – nespecifinė stuburo juosmens ir kryžmens manipuliacija bei stuburo stabilizavimo pratimai. Prieš intervenciją ir po jos buvo vertinamas nugaros skausmas, funkcinė būklė ir negalia, pilvo raumenų statinė ištvermė, nugaros raumenų statinė ištvermė, šoninių juosmens raumenų statinė ištvermė, stuburo paslankumas. Rezultatai. Tiriamųjų jaučiamas skausmas po taikytų intervencijų sumažėjo (p < 0,05), negalia ir funkcinė būklė pagėrėjo (p < 0,05), stuburo paslankumas ir liemens raumenų statinė ištvermė pagerėjo (p < 0,05). Tarp abiejų taikytų metodikų veiksmingumo statistiškai reikšmingo skirtumo nenustatyta. Išvados. Tiek taikant stuburo slankstelių mobilizaciją atliekant judesį ir stuburo stabilizavimo pratimus, tiek taikant nespecifinę juosmens ir kryžmens manipuliaciją bei stuburo stabilizavimo pratimus, sumažėjo tiriamųjų nugaros skausmas ir pagerėjo funkcinė būklė, poveikis tarp skirtingų manualinės terapijos metodų nesiskyrė.
