This study aimed to determine the effects of consuming a high fat solution (HFS) compared to a high carbohydrate solution (HCS) during a cycling effort on substrate oxidation, muscle oxygenation and performance with cyclists and triathletes. Thirteen men participated in this study (age: 30.4 ± 6.3 y; height: 178.7 ± 6.1 cm; weight: 74.9 ± 6.5 kg; V̇O2 peak: 60.5 ± 7.9 mlO2×kg-1×min-1). The solutions were isocaloric (total of 720 kcal) and were consumed every 20 minutes. Each solution of HFS contained 12.78 g of lipids, 1.33 g of carbohydrates and 0.67 g of proteins, and each solution of HCS contained 28 g of carbohydrates. We measured pulmonary oxygen consumption and skeletal muscle oxygenation, using a Near Infrared Spectrometer (NIRS) during a cycling effort consisting of 2 hours at 65 % of maximal aerobic power (MAP) followed immediately by a 3-minute time-trial (TT). We observed that the consumption of the HFS increased the rate of fat oxidation at the end of the sub-maximal effort (0.61 ± 0.14 vs 0.53 ± 0.17 g×min-1, p < 0.05). We have also shown that the HFS negatively affected the performance in the TT (mean Watts: HCS: 347.0 ± 77.4 vs HFS: 326.5 ± 88.8 W; p < 0.05) and the rating of perceived exertions during the sub-maximal effort (modified Borg Perceived Exertion scale: 1–10) (mean: 3.62 ± 0.58 for HCS vs 4.16 ± 0.62 for HFS; p < 0.05). We did not observe a significant effect of the acute consumption of the HFS compared to the HCS on muscle oxygenation during the cycling effort. Finally, we observed that cyclists who demonstrated a high skeletal muscle deoxygenation relative to their pulmonary oxygen consumption (DHHb/V̇O2) had a higher fat oxidation capacity (higher Fatmax). In conclusion, even though the consumption of HFS increased the rate of fat oxidation at the end of a sub-maximal effort, it did not affect muscle oxygenation and it negatively affected performance and perceived exertion during a time-trial and caused gastro-intestinal distress in some participants. Background. During the COVID-19 pandemic, it is paramount to investigate how to influence professional sport team consumers’ behaviours towards media consumption, which is an indirect consumption of sports products with importance raised by the lockdown. The effect of brand superiority, one of the essential consumer judgments about the brands, on some behavioural intentions of sport team consumers was examined before; however, the role of brand superiority and overall brand equity on media consumption behaviours in pandemic conditions lacked empirical investigation. Therefore, this study aims to examine the relationship between brand superiority, overall brand equity and media consumption behaviours among professional sports teams’ consumers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods. The participants of this quantitative study were 232 volunteer football (soccer) consumers who support a team in the Turkish Super Football League. The data was collected in 3 weeks using the online convenience sampling method. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and structural equation modelling (SEM) were used in data analyses, and direct and indirect paths tested by the bootstrapping method. Results. The results of the study showed that brand superiority did not have a direct effect on media consumption behaviours of sport team consumers. Besides, overall brand equity had a direct effect on media consumption behaviours and mediated the relationship between brand superiority and media consumption behaviours. Conclusions. The evidence in this study indicates sport managers that the cognitive judgement of sport consumers, generally related to the more functional aspect of a sports product alone not an efficient way to directly influence sport team consumers toward media consumption behaviours even in COVID-19 pandemic. Brand equity, however, found to be an effective tool to address for directing sport team consumers’ behaviours toward media consumption in the extraordinary circumstance currently exist.  Keywords: branding, sports industry, spectator sports, professional sports teams, sports consumers

Background. Scoliosis affects spinal mobility and the respiratory system. The Schroth method is an effective tool for the treatment of scoliosis. However, there is insufficient evidence for the efficiency of kinesio taping with the Schroth method to help manage the condition of spinal mobility and respiratory system changes for adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis. The aim. To evaluate the efficacy of the Schroth method and the Schroth method in combination with kinesio taping for spinal mobility and functional changes in the respiratory system in adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis. The methods. The study included 8 adolescent volunteers diagnosed with idiopathic scoliosis. The adolescents were divided into two groups. The Schroth method was used for the first group and the Schroth method with kinesiology taping for the second group. The study lasted 2 months, and both groups underwent 2 interventions per week. Both before and after the interventions, participants were assessed for trunk functional stability (Mathias test), lumbar and thoracic spine mobility (Schober and Otto tests), vital lung capacity (VC), and forced expiratory capacity in 1 s (FEV1). The results. In the analysed results of the interventions, it was found that the Mathias test, the Schober and Otto test, the VC and the FEV1 were improved in both groups. Comparing the results between the groups, it was established that the spinal mobility was better (p < 0,05) in the second group. However, lumbar and thoracic spinal mobility, VC, FEV1 were better (p<0,05) in the first group. The conclusion. The Schroth method with and without kinesiological taping increased trunk stability, spinal cord mobility, and VC and FEV1. The Schroth method with kinesio taping is more effective for trunk functional stability, however only the Schroth method is more effective with mobility of the lumbar and thoracic spine part as well as for VC and FEV1. Keywords: spinal cord mobility, trunk functional mobility, vital capacity.Tyrimo pagrindimas. Skoliozė daro įtaką stuburo mobilumui ir kvėpavimo sistemai. Schroth metodas yra veiksminga priemonė skoliozės gydymui. Tačiau nėra pakankamai duomenų, apie kineziologinio teipavimo kartu su Schroth metodikos taikymu veiksmingumą stuburo mobilumui ir kvėpavimo sistemos pokyčiams paaugliams, sergantiems idiopatine skolioze. Tikslas. Įvertinti Schroth metodo bei Schroth metodo kartu su kineziologiniu teipavimu veiksmingumą stuburo mobilumo ir kvėpavimo sistemos funkciniams pokyčiams paaugliams, sergantiems idiopatine skolioze. Metodai. Tyrime dalyvavo 8 savanoriai paaugliai, kuriems diagnozuota idiopatine skoliozė. Background. Body image concerns (BICs) negatively influence young people’s health as they mutilate psychosocial functioning and lifestyle. The present study aimed to compare BICs, socio-cultural attitudes towards appearance, and disordered eating (DE) in a large sample of student women and men of different body mass (BMI) and physical activity and to evaluate the mediating role of sports participation in the association between BICs and DE. Methods. A total sample of 1850 students (1087 or 58.8% were women, average age 21.6 ± 5.0 years) participated in the study and completed a questionnaire measuring BICs, internalization of the socio-cultural appearance ideals, drive for muscularity, DE, physical activity (PA), and BMI. Two hundred eighty-two men and two hundred eighty-eight women reported leisure-time participation in sports. Two-way ANOVA was conducted to test gender, BMI group, and sports participation effects on study variables. Moderated leisure-time exercise at a sports club effects were tested in the association between body image concerns (BICs) and disordered eating behaviours (DE). Results. Overweight/obese students reported greater BICs, internalization of the stereotyped appearance ideals, and DE compared to students of normal body weight. Participants of sports clubs demonstrated higher appearance evaluation and body areas satisfaction; however, they reported higher overweight preoccupation, internalization of socio-cultural ideals, drive for muscularity (men), and DE. A higher level of BMI, BICs, internalization of socio-cultural body ideals, and drive for muscularity (in men) were associated with greater DE in students. Participation in sports was not a significant moderator between BICs and DE. A significant interaction effect between BMI and exercising at a sports club was observed in women. Conditional effects demonstrated that female students with higher BMI and exercising at a sports club were at higher risk of DE (β = .18, p < .001) than women non-exercising at a sports club (β = .13, p < .001). Conclusions. Overweight students of both genders reported greater BICs and DE. Sports-involved students (men and women) demonstrated more favourable body appearance evaluation. However, sports participants of both genders demonstrated greater BICs and DE compared to non-exercisers. Sports participation had no significant mediating power on the associations between BICs and DE; however, women with higher BMI and participating in leisure-time sports faced a greater risk for DE than women with higher BMI but not participating in sports. The promotion of a positive body image was important to students, especially female students with higher BMI and participating in leisure sports. Material and methods. The study involved 20 subjects with lower back pain randomly divided into two groups: I group and II group. The first group had an age average of 24,90 ± 3,70 years, while the average age of the second group was 30 ± 4,30 years. All groups participated in a six-week exercise program three times a week. Measurements assessed: pain, functional disability, trunk mobility, femur measurement of the amplitude, static endurance of abdominal muscles. Results. After the study pain decreased in both groups (p <0.05). Lower back instability increased in both groups (p <0.05). Femur motion amplitude increased when flexing and extending, abduction and adduction in the first group (p <0.05). The second group remained statistically significantly unchanged. Functional disability decreased in the both groups (p <0.05). Abdominal muscles static endurance decreased (p <0.05). After the study no significant difference in the assessed indicators between the groups was found. Conclusions. The application of both spinal stabilization and spinal stabilization combined with hip joint mobility enhancing exercises reduced back pain, improved lumbar back stability, increased femur movement amplitude, however the study found no significant difference between programs. Key words: spinal stability exercise, hip mobility exercise, low back pain.Tyrimo pagrindimas. Viena iš apatinės nugaros dalies skausmo priežasčių yra liemens raumenų silpnumas bei sutrikusi giliųjų liemens raumenų kontrolė. Norint išlaikyti juosmeninės stuburo dalies ir dubens stabilumą bei išvengti skausmo arba funkcijos sutrikimo, svarbu aktyvuoti dauginį, skersinį pilvo, vidinius įstrižinius ir didįjį sėdmens raumenis (Kim, Yim, 2020). Tyrimo tikslas – įvertinti stuburo stabilizavimo pratimų programos ir stuburo stabilizavimo kartu su klubo sąnario mobilumą didinančiais pratimais programos poveikį skausmui bei funkcinei būklei asmenims su lėtiniu nespecifiniu apatinės nugaros dalies skausmu. Metodai. Tyrime dalyvavo 20 pacientų, kurie skundėsi lėtiniu nespecifiniu apatinės nugaros dalies skausmu, jie atsitiktiniu būdu buvo suskirstyti į dvi grupes. Pirmos grupės tiriamųjų amžius buvo 24,90 ± 3,70 metų, antros – 30,00 ± 4,30 metų. Užsiėmimai vyko tris kartus per savaitę, šešias savaites. Buvo vertinami skausmo, funkcinės būklės ir negalios, stuburo juosmeninės dalies paslankumo, šlaunies judesių amplitudės, pilvo raumenų statinės ištvermės pokyčiai. Rezultatai.

Background.  Gonarthrosis is one of the most common diseases of the musculoskeletal system. As the disease progresses, the patient’s social and physical activities change. Reliable and effective therapies that slow the progression of gonarthrosis have not yet been found. There is a lack of evidence that a short course of physiotherapy and exercise-based treatment is effective or of how mobilization with movement and kinesio taping affects knee function and pain. We believe that in patients with knee gonarthrosis, the positive effects of physiotherapy combined with mobilization with movement and kinesio taping on knee functions and pain will be better than in those subjects who received only traditional physiotherapy. Aim. To determine the effect of mobilization with movement and kinesio taping on knee function parameters and pain in gonarthrosis. Methods. The study included 22 people diagnosed with gonarthrosis. For the experimental group (n=11), physiotherapy exercise, mobilization with movement and kinesiotape were applied, whereas the control group (n=11) used only physiotherapy exercise procedures. Subjects were evaluated for pain intensity, active knee range of motion, dynamic knee joint stability and evaluation of thigh muscle strength. Results. In the experimental group, there was a significant decrease in pain after 7 days and a significant difference with control group. Significant knee flexion results were recorded in the experimental group and significant knee extension results were recorded in the control group. In the experimental group, the dynamic knee joint stabilization significantly increased after 14 days. The strength of the thigh muscles was significantly increased in the experimental group after 14 days. Conclusion. The effect of mobilization with movement and kinesio taping of knee function, dynamic stability pain improving functional performance of dynamic stability was more significant than an exercise program lasting two weeks in subjects with knee gonarthrosis. Keywords: gonarthrosis, mobilization with movement, kinesio taping.Tyrimo pagrindimas. Background. Hysterectomy (HT) is a very common procedure in which the uterus is removed surgically. The extent and type of HT surgery may vary, but the surgical intervention itself is a risk factor for the development of postoperative urinary incontinence regardless of the extent and type of surgery (Skorupska, Miotla, Kubik–Komar, Rechberger, Adamiak–Godlewska & Rechberger, 2016). Techniques for preventing urinary incontinence include maintaining proper weight, limiting the number of children, making lifestyle adjustments, and educating to perform pelvic floor muscle (PFM) training exercises correctly (Habib & Chaudhary, 2016). However, there is still a lack of research on how PFM training can be combined with other interventions (Silantyeva, et al., 2019), and different authors presernt conflicting results. Aim. The purpose was to evaluate the effect of pelvic floor muscle strengthening exercises on urinary incontinence in women after uterus removal surgery. Methods. The first group of subjects received biofeedback and usual physical therapy (BF + UT), while the second group of patients received only usual therapy (UT). All subjects were assessed for perceived pain, PFM strength, quality of life associated with urinary incontinence, and overall quality of life, before and after exposure. Pain intensity and PFM stregth were additionally assessed after 5 and 10 days. Results. After exposure, there was a significant increase in outcome in the BF + UT group – PFM strength, and quality of life associated with urinary incontinence compared to the UT group. Perceived pain and overall quality of life outcomes did not differ between groups (p > 0,05). Conclusion. Usual therapy combined with biofeedback is more effective in increasing pelvic floor muscle strength, and quality of life related to urinary incontinence, in terms of behavior, than usual therapy alone. Keywords: hysterectomy, pelvic floor muscle, pelvic floor muscle training, urinary incontinence, physical therapy.Tyrimo pagrindimas. Histerektomija – tai procedūra, kurios metu chirurginiu būdu pašalinama gimda. Histerektomijos apimtis ir būdas gali skirtis, tačiau pati chirurginė intervencija yra pooperacinio šlapimo nelaikymo rizikos veiksnys nepriklausomai nuo operacijos apimties ir būdo (Skorupska, Miotla, Kubik–Komar, Rechberger, Adamiak–Godlewska, Rechberger, 2016). Šlapimo nelaikymo prevencijos metodai: tinkamo kūno svorio palaikymas, gimdymų ribojimas, gyvenimo būdo korekcija, mokymas taisyklingai atlikti dubens dugno raumenų (DDR) treniravimo pratimus (Habib, Chaudhary, 2016). Tačiau vis dar stinga tyrimų duomenų, kaip DDR treniravimą būtų galima derinti su kitomis intervencijomis (Silantyeva, ir kt., 2019), skirtingi autoriai pateikia prieštaringus rezultatus. Tikslas – įvertinti DDR stiprinimo pratimų programų poveikį šlapimo nelaikymo sutrikimui moterims po gimdos pašalinimo operacijos. Metodai.

    Get PDF
Background. Healthy lifestyle is one of the main health determinants. Chronic diseases can be prevented by adopting health-related behavior and developing it into habits. Scientific literature suggests that psychosocial factors are part of people’s lives as they also affect health and health behaviors and it is important to understand them. Methods. Primary data collection method was face-to-face interview based on previous research. The main data was collected with self-reported diaries. Qualitative content analysis was used to analyze the data. Data was gathered on psychosocial factors and habits of adult women. There were eight participants in the study. Results. The following psychosocial aspects related to health behaviors were encoded in the results: self-efficacy, intrinsic motivation, social support, distress and extrinsic motivation. The following emotions were encoded: joy, surprise, sadness, anger and fear. Women had similar psychosocial aspects and emotions towards new physical activity and nutritional habits. Conclusions. The findings indicated that self-efficacy was a dominant psychosocial aspect in the formation of physical activity habits. Together with intrinsic motivation, which manifested mostly after performing their chosen physical activity behavior, self-efficacy was restored in cases that women felt down about themselves.
