The emergence of the linguistic sign : vocomimesis, symmetry and enaction
STEELS postulates that the origins of the linguistic sign were both self-referential and vocomimetic. More precisely, vocal resonances accompanying bilaterally symmetrical, close-open movements of the jaw may have been recruited intersubjectively by Homo to refer back to the jaw and its anatomical region, before being mapped homologously to bilaterally symmetrical parts of the body located to each side of the median plane, or along it. I claim that this body-naming strategy, which may still be detectable submorphemically in certain PIE body-part words, involves key enactive concepts such as sense-making and embodiment, and neurophysiological phenomena such as mirror neuron systems. STEELS postulates that the origins of the linguistic sign were both self-referential and vocomimetic. More precisely, vocal resonances accompanying bilaterally symmetrical, close-open movements of the jaw may have been unconsciously recruited by Homo to refer back to the jaw and its anatomical region, before being mapped homologously to other bilaterally symmetrical parts of the body located to each side of the median plane, or along it. I claim that this body-naming strategy, which may still be detectable submorphemically in certain Proto-Indo-European body-part words, involves key enactive concepts such as sense-making and embodiment, and neurophysiological phenomena such as mirror neuron systems
Perspective taking in language: When bodily involvement impacts motion events’ descriptions
Relying on the Talmian typology, this investigation explores perspective taking in language through English and French spoken corpora delivered by speakers submitted to different bodily constraints before delineating motion events. The effects of speakers’ bodily involvement on their linguistic identification of perspectives are spotlighted, relying on the hypothesis according to which speakers’ sensorimotor processes can be corollary mirrored in their speech acts. Descriptions are analysed through the concept of embodiment, which highlights the significant role played by the body through speakers’ reports. Language users are apprehended as enacting the world through linguistic productions resulting from bodily, linguistic and non-linguistic variables.
Speakers’ linguistic apprehension of the world tends to be circumscribed by the language they use, a language that mirrors speech habits, structured by lexical and morphosyntactic patterns. To this respect, when structuring the domain of space through language, English verbs and satellites foreground the action and background the purpose (swim across a river), whereas French linguistic features foreground the aim and background the act (traverser la rivière à la nage); both linguistic patterns giving hence precisions on the relationship held between the speaker and his body according to what is preferentially highlighted in the language used. These linguistic patterns illustrate the Talmian typology which opposes satellite-framed languages like English, to verb-framed languages like French. To further investigate this typology, distinguishing phrases structured differently to refer to motion events (Talmy, 2000) according to the type of language used, an experiment soliciting English and French spoken corpora aims at demonstrating whether the affiliation of a language to a specific language type (e.g. English as a satellite-framed language) determines or not the embedding of the language examined to this specific affiliation, once the speech is actually implemented in discursive contexts
The interactive dimension of mental construal an the participant-setting distinction in the expression of stance
This paper presents an account of the phenomenon of mental construal manifested in English expressions of stance through the distinction of clauses that are headed by subjects associated with two conceptual archetypes: participant (P) invoked by the first-person pronoun (‘I am certain that’) and abstract setting (S) conveyed by anticipatory ‘it’ (‘It is certain that’). With recourse to the main theoretical points on the anchoring of linguistic meaning in the acts of mental construal and interactive coordination, the conducted analysis focuses on a corpus of about 350 examples that represent narrative and dialogic discourse in English-language fiction. It shown that the choice of stance expressions with P- and S-subjects is motivated by the distinctions that arise in discourse between actual and mentally represented types of reality, the contrast between reference-making and viewing as types of cognitive operations and the associated narrative and dialogic strategies.
Analysis of the SER/ESTAR opposition based on the origins and evolution of {st} saliencing : a submorphological and enactive approach.
The theory of submorphologic salience has tried to show that the notion of « stability » is often expressed in Spanish through words that include the consonantal group {st}. However, this salience is the constitutive marker of the verb estar’s paradigm, generally associated with accidental or circumstantial existence with no essentialising projection, as opposed to the verb ser. Taking a diachronic and synchronic approach based on the signifier, this article aims to explain and understand this apparent contradiction, i.e. the systemic and semantic opposition between ser and estar (sedere/stare). The hypothesis defended in this study is that we are faced with a semantic opposition that can also be seen at the level of the signifiers, which are opposed in two different configurations offering an illustrative example of the motivation of the sign.
