Bilingualism and European Politics
—In this article, the author will define the term of “code-switching” and the concept of “bilingualism”: phenomena which have been raising increasingly more interest among sociolinguists. In the second part of the paper, notions of early and late bilingualism and their characteristics will be presented. The author will write about the flux of well-known languages, bilingual expression, and the problem of the interference of one language in another. In the third part, the author will focus on how the terminology used in today’s European community institutions is presented in the classification of foreign languages according to European institutions. It is important to point out that, according to the SCIC and the DGT (the main recruitment agencies of translators and interpreters), there is no such thing as total bilingualism but rather a risk of a lack of a mother tongue. In other words, there is the lack of full mastery of any language. It is precisely for this reason that special language tests have been prepared over the years with the aim of determining which language is the true mother tongue
Regularity and the “Frenchness”of the Cornelian Cid in the Observations of Georges de Scudéry
In 1637 Georges de Scudéry (1598–1667) published his Observations on Pierre Corneille’s The Cid, played triumphantly a short time before. An in-depth reading of Scudéry’s text will enable us to highlight the main points of Scudéry’s relationship between the “Hispanity” of the Cornelian model (Las Mocedades del Cid by Guillén de Castro) and the general tendency towards a gradual regularization/nationalization of French theatrical production.
In Search of Emotions in The Illiterate by Agota Kristof
In The Illiterate, Agota Kristof describes eleven important moments in her life where she exceeded various borderlines: she crossed temporal, spatial, linguistic, and identity frontiers. Although her writing is extremely simplified and devoid of expressivisms, this text arouses very strong emotions. The purpose of this communication is to review the linguistic means by which “The Illiterate” expresses and inspires emotions among its readers.

Stylistic Problems of Translation : Some Italian Translations of Bouvard et Pécuchet
In light of the notion of orthonymy, as defined by Jean-Claude Chevalier and Marie-France Delport in L’Horlogerie de saint Jérôme (1995) and Jérômiade (2010), the transposition of two Flaubertian style features in a few Italian translations of Bouvard et Pécuchet are considered in this article, namely the sub-paragraph partition and sentence pattern relative to conjunctions and adverbs. It will be shown how a normative representation of the target language often influences the translator’s choices at the expense of the formal originality of the source text.
Affectivity in Italian and Polish Language
—This paper is devoted to Polish and Italian derivational formatives, whose value in general language is defined in terms of diminution and augmentation. However, in specialist hunting terminology they happen to take on a series of different meanings. Two of these functions are highlighted: qualitative and objective (also known as “derivational”). These two functions are approached in a comparative perspective. A set of concrete examples, where both suffixes and alternations are combined, demonstrates the prevailing values of particular compound units. In Italian hunting terminology, qualitative function is demonstrated to be merely secondary. Conversely, objective function is given priority in its derived units. In spite of the fact that they maintain some degree of relatedness to words which constitute their derivational bases, Italian derived units mainly denote a separate species. Therefore, the objective function, whose role, rather than modifying, is to produce a genuine semantic change, becomes one of the basic methods of enriching Italian hunting lexis. By contrast, the alliance of suffixation and alternations in Polish hunting terminology serves mainly stylistic purposes and merely produces modifying effects
The Position and Presence of Rhematizers in the Contrastive Perspective: An Analysis of Translated Texts (Czech and Spanish)
This contribution is focused on the comparison of focus particles in Spanish and Czech. Firstly, some conceptual asymmetries between the Czech and Spanish linguistic conceptions of focus particles are presented. Then, on the basis of the case of the Czech particle alespoň (al menos, por lo menos in Spanish), the positional differences are pointed out, and consequently the insertion or omission in the translation are discussed. It is also pointed out that there are some relatively apparent tendencies: namely the tendency to omit the particles and to extend their operative scope in translations into Spanish, and the tendency to insert them and restrict the operational scope of particle in translations into Czech.
The Article in Italian and the Flexive Languages
—In this study, we primarily outline from a comparative point of view the concept of the inception and the evolutionary dynamics of the definite article in the Italian language as well as its main traits and types compared to the flexive languages, which indicate the syntactic function of words through the use of cases. Special attention is paid to the Slavic languages from the Balkan area, which, in addition to their article having a category, are characterized by several distinguishing traits. During translation, we put extra emphasis on the sensitive aspect related to an important semantic function of the definite article in the Italian language, especially in situations when it accompanies a specific group of adjectives that change their meaning depending on whether they occupy a prenominal or postnominal position. In the final part of our study, we pointed out the necessity of a more complex examination of the issue related to the morphological category of the article in the nominal syntagm in the Italian language from both the syntactic and the pragmatic point of view
Four Perceptions of Almada Negreiros
—In 2017 the Portuguese-speaking world celebrated the centennial of the magazine Portugal Futurista. One of the main characters of the wave of Portuguese avant-garde artists was Almada Negreiros, who was known as “a total artist”: he was a painter, draftsman, dancer, novelist, poet, and playwright. This artist occupied a central position in the first generation of modernists. He performed ambiguous artistic works during the Salazar regime, and his legacy was systematically refused several years after the Carnation Revolution. Today the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum displays an apolitical anthological exhibition of paintings by Almada Negreiros, thus rehabilitating him as a great Portuguese artist. This study intends to show that there are four different perceptions of Almada Negreiros’s oeuvre, which were both celebrated and rejected by the public
The Transcription of Czechoslovak Dissent: the Contribution of Sylvie Germain
This paper looks into the novel transcription of recent historical events of Czechoslovakia by the French author Sylvie Germain, who witnessed the precarious situation of Czechoslovak dissidents in Prague during the Communist era and the Velvet Revolution in 1989. Far from making a fascinating story open to political considerations out of it, Germain privileges thinking about the meaning of freedom not conditioned by external circumstances.
