Biomarker Assay Development: Urinary Titin in Becker Muscular Dystrophy
Mutations in a structural muscle protein called dystrophin result in muscle fiber degradation and diseases such as Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) and Becker muscular dystrophy (BMD). Such muscle fiber degradation can result in large titin fragments being released into serum and excreted into the urine. Compared to current methods using muscle biopsy and serum collection, our study utilizes urine as a potential non-invasive method for monitoring disease progression in BMD by quantifying urinary titin fragments. This is done through development of an immunoassay based on the enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) format using liposomal technology as a method of detection. The development of this platform is expected to provide discrimination between disease severities in BMD patients in hopes to better monitor disease progression and could be used for other muscular dystrophies and cardiomyopathies impacted by titin. Effects of Food Insecurity on Academic Motivation Amongst Undergraduate University Students
Food insecurity is a prevalent problem for undergraduate students. The stress associated with food insecurity may reduce academic motivation, which may be linked to academic performance. However, no reports exist in the literature assessing this relationship. An anonymous online survey targeting adults 18 years or older was distributed via social media platforms. The survey included demographic questions, the Food Insecurity Experience Scale, and the Academic Motivation Scale. Data was analyzed using Pearson’s Correlation Correlation in SPSS Version 25.0. A total of 997 participants completed the survey.The results showed significant negative correlations between academic motivation and food insecurity and stress (p\u3c0.01). Caring about attending college and a household running out of food was negatively correlated (p\u3c0.01). Experiencing stress and being unable to eat healthy and nutritious food (p\u3c0.01) were positively correlated. Overall, food insecurity is linked to a negative state of mind, which may reduce academic motivation.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2023/1052/thumbnail.jp
Islamic Law and Women in Iran
The death of Mahsa Amini last September kicked off a wave of unrest that persists to this day; Iranians are calling for change, and women’s rights are at the forefront. My research will focus on the role of Islamic law in the changing status of women’s social rights in the Islamic Republic of Iran between the 1979 Revolution and the present day, specifically in regards to family law, access to education and the regime’s mandatory veiling policy. I will discuss both the fundamentalist regime’s use of so-called Islamic principles to justify repressive policies against women and the major arguments used by reformers, nationally and internationally, against those policies. I will also look at to what extent the women’s movement in Iran has been successful in achieving legal reform in the past, and how the causes and rhetoric of today’s protests differ from those of previous reform movements.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2023/1059/thumbnail.jp
Effects of PECS and Staff Instruction on Social Requests in a Naturalistic Setting
Communication deficits are a core symptom of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and as a result many autistic children use Augmentative Alternative Communication (AAC), such as the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), to facilitate communication. PECS interventions are typically taught in a classroom setting, whereas few studies have evaluated PECS use in a naturalistic setting, such as a playground. The aim of the present study was to examine the effects of introducing PECS into a naturalistic setting on social requests (SR), as well as the effects of staff instruction on SR made with PECS. Participants consisted of 6 pre-school aged autistic children who used PECS. Overall, results indicated a significant increase in the percentage of correct social requests following staff instruction, and an increase in the frequency of SR made with PECS. Frequency of social requests remained consistent across phases. Combating Jurisdictonal Barriers That Cause Susceptibility of Native American Women to Rape
Native American women are twice as likely to be raped than women of other races and ethnicities in the United States. My research seeks to answer: (1) why the rates are so high, (2) what has been done to address this, and (3) what we can do now and in the future to provide a solution that will lower this susceptibility. To accomplish this, I evaluate legal cases such as Oliphant V Susquamish, interviews of women including but not limited to Sarah Deer and Lisa Brunner, who share their personal stories and are prominent figures in the movement to redress this issue, and research findings of health and government agencies. In addition, I consult secondary scholarship and media coverage. Preliminary research pins the “jurisdictional maze”, a term for the complex jurisdiction system when handling assault cases of plaintiffs who are Native American as a primary cause for the high rate. Writing on this topic and answering these questions will be beneficial as it will provide measures to prevent the high rates and better access for women to protection of their sexual health.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2023/1093/thumbnail.jp
High Signal-To-Noise Ratio Event-Driven MEMS Motion Sensing
Two solutions for improving MEMS triboelectric vibration sensors performance in contact-separation mode are reported experimen- tally and analytically. Triboelectric sensors have mostly been studied in the mesoscale. The gap variation between the electrodes induces a potential difference that represents the external vibration. Miniaturizing the device limits the sensor output because of the limited gap. This work offers a warped MEMS diaphragm constrained on its edges. The dome-shaped structure provides one order of magnitude larger displacement after contact-separation than standard designs resulting in one order of magnitude greater volt- age and signal-to-noise-ratio. Secondly, micro triboelectric sensors do not operate unless the external vibration is sufficiently forceful to initiate contact between layers. The proposed constraints on the edge of the diaphragm provide friction during periodic motion and generate charges. The combination of the warped diaphragm and boundary constraints instead of serpentine springs increases the charge density and voltage generation. The mechanical properties and electrical output are thoroughly investigated including nonlinearity, sensitivity, and signal-to-noise ratio. Sensitivity of 250 mV/g and signal-to-noise-ratio of 32 dB is provided by the pre- sented device at resonance which is very promising for event-driven motion sensors because it does not require signal conditioning and therefore simplifies the sensing circuitry
Early Urban Archaeology at Strawbery Banke Museum
This article describes my personal experiences of doing archaeological field work and documentary research in 1968 and 1969 at Strawbery Banke, building on the 1966 work of Roland Robbins. Discussed are the sources of grant support, the field crew, the research team, how the excavations of the waterway were conducted, and how data types as diverse as, to name a few artifacts, architecture, deeds, maps, photographs, and floral, faunal, and soil samples were handled. The end results included archaeological collections for Strawbery Banke from Puddle Dock, a Ph.D. dissertation, and several meeting papers and articles
