Episode 5: Public Archeology Facility: Bearing the Bones of Public Humanities
In this episode we are joined by Dr. Laurie Miroff, the Director of the Public Archaeology Facility. The PAF is an archaeology firm at Binghamton University (Binghamton, NY) organized in 1972 to provide cultural resource management (CRM) services to clients throughout the Northeastern United States, but with a focus on New York State and Pennsylvania. Dr. Miroff talks to us about the work that the PAF does with the community, schools and so on. She shares with us some interesting stories about the findings of the University Downtown Center sites. Socioeconomic Geographies and Municipal Decision Making of New York\u27s Climate Smart Communities Program
Nearly all of New York’s residents live in a municipality designated as a Climate Smart Community, but few are familiar with one of the state’s major legislative accomplishments. The initiative allows municipalities to earn points toward a climate smart certification by implementing sustainable technologies in their communities, which in turn makes them eligible for increased grant funding from New York State. As climate change begins to have a greater impact on human and natural life, investing in green infrastructure has never been more important. New York’s Climate Smart Communities program is widespread, but adoption rates vary greatly throughout the state as the downstate and mid-Hudson Valley regions dominated the program’s development in the first ten years. Areas along the western and southern borders of New York have a significantly lower number of registered climate smart communities compared to other counties. Certified climate smart communities can unlock large sustainability grants, which are two to three times larger than funding from the Office of Environmental Justice, which selects for only major cities, regardless of their location in the state or median household income. With these high-stakes incentives, municipalities throughout the state have taken notice of the program and begun to register as climate smart at a rapid pace over the last five years. While the increase in green infrastructure is encouraging, the benefits to the physical environment are still unknown, as there was no improvement in water quality with the presence of a climate smart community
MMP-2 regulates Src activation via repression of the CHK/MATK tumor suppressor in osteosarcoma
Background: Doxorubicin, a first-line anticancer drug for osteosarcoma treatment, has been the subject of recent research exploring the mechanisms behind its chemoresistance and its ability to enhance cell migration at sublethal concentrations. Matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2), a type IV collagenase and zinc-dependent endopeptidase, is well-known for degrading the extracellular matrix and promoting cancer metastasis. Our previous work demonstrated that nuclear MMP-2 regulates ribosomal RNA transcription via histone clipping, thereby controlling gene expression. Additionally, MMP-2 activity is regulated by the non-receptor tyrosine kinase and oncogene, Src, which plays a crucial role in cell adhesion, invasion, and metastasis. Src kinase is primarily regulated by two endogenous inhibitors: C-terminal Src kinase (Csk) and Csk homologous kinase (CHK/MATK).
Aim: In this study, we reveal that the MMP-2 gene acts as an upstream regulator of Src kinase activity by suppressing its endogenous inhibitor, CHK/MATK, in osteosarcoma cells.
Methods and Results: We show that enhanced osteosarcoma cell migration which is induced by sublethal concentrations of doxorubicin can be overcome by inactivating the MMP-2 gene or overexpressing CHK/MATK. Our findings highlight the MMP-2 gene as a promising additional target for combating cancer cell migration and metastasis. This is due to its role in suppressing on the gene and protein expression of the tumor suppressor CHK/MATK in osteosarcoma.
Conclusion: By targeting the MMP-2 gene, we can potentially enhance the effectiveness of doxorubicin treatment and reduce chemoresistance in osteosarcoma

Correlation Between Consistent Healthy Habits and Mental Health
Displaying healthy habits, such as adhering to healthy diets or getting adequate sleep, has been linked to positive mental health outcomes in the past. We aimed to study the impact that frequency of healthy habits (such as exercise, diet, sleep, etc) had on mental health. The purpose of our study was to explore the relationship between consistency of healthy habits and mental wellbeing, resilience, and motivation through a self-reported survey. We found significant correlations between consistent healthy habits and positive mental health. Conversely, frequent negative habits were correlated to other negative habits (such as fast food consumption and low exercise) Based on our findings, we suggest that consistency and frequency of habits is a key factor in having positive mental health outcomes. Additionally, we suggest limiting frequency of negative habits, like fast food consumption, due to poor mental health outcomes and influence on development of other negative habit
