By Any Measure: The Racial Demographics of Librarians

    No full text
The things that get measured by an organization are a tell for what matters to the organization. Librarianship has been grappling with an underrepresentation of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) librarians for decades, and while libraries have developed a plethora of recruitment initiatives, the numbers appear to have not changed meaningfully, remaining static over the decades. A contributing factor may be that demographic information about the profession is not routinely measured and reported

The Immediate and Future Impacts of COVID-19 on K-12 Public Education in the United States

When schools changed to a distanced model in 2020 due to COVID-19, students quickly adapted to virtual learning with varying resources. One consequence we see is that many students struggled and fell behind grade level. Although the pandemic made it clear that online learning may not be the most effective model, it is possible with proper resources. Comparing various income brackets and analyzing the Nation’s Report Card’s data, a collection of fourth- and eighth-grade test scores, and interviews with education professionals, I examine the immediate impact of distance learning and its future implications for K-12 public education in the US. Education stands at the backbone of society. If these learning gaps are true, students will be at a disadvantage forever. The traditional school model has been the same for decades. The introduction of distance learning can severely impact schooling as we know it.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2023/1035/thumbnail.jp

The Effect of Dietary Patterns & Mental State

    Get PDF
The most common forms of mental disorder treatment include therapy, medication and physical activity. However, it is not quite as common to look at dietary habits to improve mental health. An anonymous online survey was administered through a google form. The survey included questions on the individuals general demographic, diet parameters, and various aspects of their mental health and mood states. There is an association between positive mood states and a healthy dietary pattern. Through the results that were obtained via the survey, it is concluded that there is a correlation between a healthy, balanced diet and a positive mental state.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2023/1041/thumbnail.jp

The Misinformation Pandemic––How Politicians, Commentators, and Extremist Groups Used Social Media to Infect America

    Get PDF
My research breaks down the relationship between social media algorithms, inflammatory rhetoric, and real-life consequences as they apply to the January 6th Capitol Riots. In the weeks after the 2020 Presidential Election, conspiracy theories about electoral fraud spread rapidly in online spaces, eventually materializing into a physical attack to disrupt the Electoral College vote count. In the wake of this assault on democracy, analysis of social media giants such as Twitter and Facebook revealed inept moderation systems and aggressive promotional algorithms. Politicians, commentators, and extremist groups took advantage of the underlying structure of widely used social media platforms to urge Americans to “stop the steal,” often with threatening and violent rhetoric to appeal to basic emotions like anger and fear.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2023/1046/thumbnail.jp

Facile Synthesis of Pt-Ni-Ru Nanoframes with Superior Performance for Methanol Oxidation Reaction

    Get PDF
The large-scale commercialization of direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) depends on the design of state-of-the-art Pt-based anode catalysts with superior catalytic performance toward methanol oxidation reaction (MOR). Herein, a facile synthesis of Pt-Ni-Ru nanoframes (NFs) by galvanic replacement reaction of Pt-Ni solid nanocubes (NCs) is reported. The obtained samples are characterized by physical characterization and electrochemical measurements. The results demonstrate that Ru (2wt%) was successfully deposited into the NFs. Furthermore, the Pt-Ni-Ru NFs exhibited a specific activity of 9.50 mA/cm2 and a mass activity of 0.97 A/mgPt.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2023/1050/thumbnail.jp

Dual Task Cost of Motor and Cognitive Performance in Individuals with Parkinson’s Disease

    Get PDF
Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is characterized by both motor, non-motor symptoms, as well as cognitive changes. Given the background of this disease, and the impact external stimulation has on exacerbating symptoms, it is hypothesized that (1) verbal fluency dual task walking conditions will be associated with slower gait speed, and (2) verbal fluency tasks performed in sitting will yield faster and more accurate response rates than walking verbal fluency tasks. To evaluate motor performance, participants were asked to ambulate at their self-selected speed for 3 ST and 3 DT trials across a 10m walkway. The Wilcoxon Signed Rank test was used to identify differences between the ST & DT conditions for both motor and cognitive performance. The results indicate that in individuals with PD, the accuracy and quantity of responses decrease, which may jeopardize their ability to effectively perform multiple tasks. The heterogeneous nature of the subjects might indicate providing individualized interventions.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2023/1062/thumbnail.jp

The Improvements and Advantages of Hybrid UAS Systems in the Detection of Metals and Other Anthropogenic Objects

The Northwestern Tier of New York is plagued by the past industrialization of the fracking industry. Anywhere west of Broome county, you are likely to find abandoned oil and fracking wells. Abandoned fracking wells are point sources for methane emissions with some estimations saying the unplugged wells, in a day, emit as much as the entire city of Buffalo\u27s cars emit in a year. Because all wells in New York State are considered abandoned, there is legislation preventing the new installation of wells. This means that across the Western Tier, there are countless wells which lay unmanned and unplugged – constantly polluting into the environment around them. Our research project is the development of a method for the efficient location and classification of orphaned wells in the hard-to-navigate terrain of the Northeast. In creating a uniform method for locating and classifying, the orphaned well dilemma can be better managed.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2023/1065/thumbnail.jp

The Purpose of Just Talking : The Role of Sex and Emotions

    Get PDF
“Just Talking” is an emerging phenomenon used to maintain casual, non-committal relationships; it is intentionally ambiguous and lacks definitional consensus. Analysis of the “Just Talking” terminology allows for further understanding of the role of sex and emotions within college hook-up and dating culture. Qualitative data from same and mixed-gender focus groups (n=37) and quantitative survey results from open-ended questions on the “Hook-Up Study” (n=335) have shed light on the purpose behind the “Just Talking” stage, suggesting that its purpose is often related to “keeping options open” more so than other coded categorizations. The role that emotions and sex play in the overall purpose of “Just Talking” as well as the gender differences in responses are important elements of the phenomenon. Differing perspectives on the purpose of “Just Talking” may be reflective of the differing perspectives that exist on the connections between sex, emotions, and the phenomenon itself.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2023/1078/thumbnail.jp
