    Anatoliy Golitsyn’s Epistemological Disinformation

    Get PDF
In 1961, KGB agent Anatoliy Golitsyn defected to the West. In his attempts to collaborate with American intelligence agencies, Golitsyn generated a number of memoranda to the CIA that accused subsequent defectors of operating as double agents. This paper interprets Golitsyn\u27s writings through an epistemological approach to facts that distinguishes between situations in which what we know to be true is based on fact and situations in which we turned out to be right, but only because we were lucky (known as the Gettier Case). I argue, that Golitsyn\u27s writings reflect a common epistemological strategy in disinformation campaigns that resembles the Gettier Case. Ultimately, as both FBI and CIA responses to Golitsyn show, the very existence of disinformation is enough to create debate about the existence of a knowable truth. The more disinformation generated, the more likely it is that some of it (through luck) will realize the desired effect.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2023/1082/thumbnail.jp

Downregulation of MYC and KRAS modulates Ovarian Cancer Cell growth

    Get PDF
Ovarian cancer is the fifth leading cause of cancer mortality among women. Aggressive ovarian cancer frequently has upregulation of two cancer proteins: KRAS and MYC. It is unknown if decreasing these proteins will affect ovarian cancer cell growth or modulate the efficacy of common chemotherapies. To address this gap in knowledge, we created a TET-ON/siRNA system where we could titrate the knocking down of each oncogene. We examined the effect of titrating the siRNA on oncogene expression and identified that 25 microgram/mL of tetracycline decreased the target oncogene expression. We also examined the effect of a tetracycline titration, and subsequently oncogene expression, on 2D and 3D cell growth. We found that knocking down the oncogenes modulated the cancer cell growth in a 3D, but not 2D, cancer cell model. With this information, cancer patients following certain criteria can benefit from this gene therapy to improve chemotherapy outcomes.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2023/1097/thumbnail.jp

    Marijuana and the Capitalist Agenda

    Get PDF
In recent years, the United States has loosened restrictions on the commodification of marijuana. This move towards less strict policy counteracts much of the mainstream ideology surrounding marijuana during the 20th century. Such a shift in public opinion is at least partially attributable to the capitalist society itself. By analyzing the ways in which marijuana can be sublimated into capitalism, we can better understand how profit motivates today’s industries more than ethical and social circumstances. By comparing the circumstances of the 20th century, to the circumstances we are now presented with, the ways in which our legal system handles drug offenses are quite discernible. The US criminalizes people in order to prevent them from making a living outside of capitalism. President Nixon declared the “War on Drugs” to prevent the economically disenfranchised from surviving outside of the constraints of minimum wage. Since Nixon’s presidency, innovation and technology have made it possible for companies to begin profiting from marijuana. By taking the role of drug trafficking out of the hands of the disenfranchised, companies can become extremely profitable through advertisement and mass production. When marijuana is characterized as a product more so than an illicit substance, social perceptions change. These changing social perceptions are reflected in the media, through legislation, and in technological advancements.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2023/1136/thumbnail.jp

Documentation of the Investment in Battery Technology Innovation in Endicott, New York

    Get PDF
This project aims to document the development of Endicott following the 113.7-million-dollar investment supporting battery technology innovation. This project will document the state of the site to be developed and surrounding neighborhoods before development and keep records throughout the construction timeline. The methods of documentation in this project include on-site photography, analysis of current maps, construction plans and eventual outcomes. This project will also monitor opinions of development by conducting interviews with residents affected by construction and monitoring media for a community-wide sentiment. As information is gathered during the development process, this project will ensure that leaders are fulfilling their promises. The results of this project can serve as a baseline of public acceptance and expectations for similarly sized projects. This project will be carried out through collaboration between student and faculty researchers to determine the success of development and fulfillment of project promises to provide grounds for future research.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2023/1141/thumbnail.jp

Nonprofits and Housing Insecurity in Binghamton

    Get PDF
In Binghamton, NY, housing insecurity has been exacerbated by the increased demand for university students who are moving off-campus to save money. This has caused difficulty for low-income households to find affordable housing. An important way to address concerns with the availability and affordability of housing is to recognize the importance of nonprofits. Nonprofits work to further support low-income families to find affordable housing by filling in some of the gaps that public housing can’t fill. Through qualitative research methods such as investigating scholarly sources, participating with nonprofits, and discussions, I analyze some of the nonprofits in the greater Binghamton area and their impact. This research project provides insight into the housing sector in the Greater Binghamton area and can be used as background for further in-depth analysis on this topic.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2023/1144/thumbnail.jp

Integrated genomic, proteomic and cognitive assessment inDuchenne Muscular Dystrophy suggest astrocyte centric pathology

    Get PDF
Introduction: Documented Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) biomarkers are confined to Caucasians and are poor indicators of cognitive difficulties and neuropsychological alterations. Materials and methods: This study correlates serum protein signatures with cognitive performance in DMD patients of South Asian origin. Study included 25 DMD patients aged 6–16 years. Cognitive profiles were assessed by Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children. Serum proteome profiling of 1317 proteins was performed in eight DMD patients and eight age-matched healthy volunteers. Results: Among the several novel observations we report, better cognitive performance in DMD was associated with increased serum levels of MMP9 and FN1 but decreased Siglec-3, C4b, and C3b. Worse cognitive performance was associated with increased serum levels of LDH-H1 and PDGF-BB but reduced GDF-11, MMP12, TPSB2, and G1B. Secondly, better cognitive performance in Processing Speed (PSI) and Perceptual Reasoning (PRI) domains was associated with intact Dp116, Dp140, and Dp71 dystrophin isoforms while better performance in Verbal Comprehension (VCI) and Working Memory (WMI) domains was associated with intact Dp116 and Dp140 isoforms. Finally, functional pathways shared with Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) point towards an astrocyte-centric model for DMD. Conclusion: Astrocytic dysfunction leading to synaptic dysfunction reported previously in AD may be a common pathogenic mechanism underlying both AD and DMD, linking protein alterations to cognitive impairment. This new insight may pave the path towards novel therapeutic approaches targeting reactive astrocytes
