Autonomic nervous system and viscera-related responses to manual therapy: A narrative overview
Background: Manual therapy (MT) has long-held that it physiologically impacts autonomic nervous system (ANS)and viscera-related function. This narrative review is intended to serve as a consolidated interdisciplinary resource of original studies related to physiological effects of MT as it relates to the ANS for MT clinicians and researchers new to this MT-related topic.
Objective: This review seeks to identify ANS and viscera-related physiological responses to MT interventions using search terms commonly used by chiropractic, massage, osteopathic, physical therapy, and structural integration clinicians and to provide a quick reference resource of original MT-related studies investigating ANS effects.
Methods: For this interdisciplinary review, the search was limited to the largest and most commonly used database (PubMed) between years 2000 and 2024, with a focus on direct ANS-related physiological outcomes. Unlike systematic reviews, assessment of scientific rigor and potential bias of included articles was beyond the scope and purpose of the current work.
Results: Original MT-related studies provide mixed evidence with regards to immediate and/or short term ANS and/or viscera-related responses on blood pressure, heart rate variability, skin conductance/temperature, respiratory and lymphatic changes.
Conclusions: This review identified a large number of MT and ANS-related original research in PubMed. Careful study of original MT-related research is needed with particular attention focused on the standardization of MT methodological approaches, appropriate controls, study design, appropriate populations, MT techniques, and anatomical site delivery so as to design more rigorous studies in order to arrive at definitive conclusions regarding direct effects of MT on the ANS

Binghamton University Libraries in the summer of 2023 was asked to implement ORCID across the University. The Libraries built a budget that included some outreach materials and the hiring of 2 graduate students to help with the outreach. In this discussion we will talk about what we didn\u27t do, what we should have done, and what we are doing well with lessons learned. After identifying 660 faculty we currently have about 270 registered, and have asked to extend the sign up project into next year. We will discuss future plans and why we feel this is critical work
Tools for clinical pharmacists to identify medications that can cause drug-induced cognitive impairment: A systematic review
Cognitive impairment affects around 19% of community-dwelling older adults in the United States. Pharmacists can play a significant role in identifying and deprescribing cognitive-impairing medications through cognitive-focused medication reviews or as part of comprehensive medication management. Multiple tools exist to help pharmacists and other practitioners identify these medications, yet a comprehensive description of these tools has not been undertaken. We searched EBSCO MEDLINE, PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, and PsycInfo from inception to August 4, 2023, using search terms relative to medications and cognition. Studies were included if they detailed a tool to assess the cognitive burden of a medication regimen. Abstracts and full texts were screened independently and in duplicate. Any disagreements at the level of full-text screening were resolved by consensus. Eligible studies underwent data extraction by two authors independently and in duplicate using a data extraction form. Our search identified 13 126 articles of which only four tools were initially included. Additionally, we identified seven articles from the reference lists of excluded review articles for a final inclusion count of 11 tools. Articles were published between 2001 and 2017. Nine of 11 tools (82%) were focused solely on anticholinergic medications, while only one tool indicated a clinically relevant cutoff value and alternative medication recommendations. While there are many tools to assess the cognitive burden from medications, many are limited by the development date, focus on anticholinergic medications, or lack clinically useful information. Further research is needed to develop more comprehensive, up-to-date, and readily implementable tools that clinical pharmacists can utilize to assess medication-induced cognitive risks. Such as tool could be applied by pharmacists in many settings to optimize medication use and improve patient outcomes

Clustering microbiome data using mixtures of logistic normal multinomial models
Discrete data such as counts of microbiome taxa resulting from next-generation sequencing are routinely encountered in bioinformatics. Taxa count data in microbiome studies are typically high-dimensional, over-dispersed, and can only reveal relative abundance therefore being treated as compositional. Analyzing compositional data presents many challenges because they are restricted to a simplex. In a logistic normal multinomial model, the relative abundance is mapped from a simplex to a latent variable that exists on the real Euclidean space using the additive log-ratio transformation. While a logistic normal multinomial approach brings flexibility for modeling the data, it comes with a heavy computational cost as the parameter estimation typically relies on Bayesian techniques. In this paper, we develop a novel mixture of logistic normal multinomial models for clustering microbiome data. Additionally, we utilize an efficient framework for parameter estimation using variational Gaussian approximations (VGA). Adopting a variational Gaussian approximation for the posterior of the latent variable reduces the computational overhead substantially. The proposed method is illustrated on simulated and real datasets

Introduction
The articles in this issue were originally presented at the annual Council for Northeast Historical Archaeology meeting held in Portsmouth, New Hampshire in November 2017. Professional archaeologists from each decade of Strawbery Banke’s institutional history reflected on their experiences. Since the 1960s, the museum has made archaeology an important part of efforts to interpret history, educate visitors, and engage the public. Strawbery Banke is considered “one of the best urban archaeological sites in America” (Starbuck 2006: 109), and the many professional archaeologists employed by the museum have contributed to Portsmouth’s recognition as “one of the richest resources for historical archaeology in northern New England” (Garvin 1974: 7). These articles reflect on the museum archaeologists’ challenges and successes, their contributions to both the academy and to the public, and discuss the future of the program
Archaeological Research Opportunities and Contributions at the Chase House Site
Between 2008 and 2014, Strawbery Banke’s excavation efforts were focused on the south and east yards of the Chase House (SB26). Although the extant 1762 Chase House was the first restored building opened at Strawbery Banke, no archaeological research had previously been done there. Possible relocation of an historical barn to the site drew attention to the need to investigate the Chase House property in order to gather information about a former kitchen ell, outbuilding, and privy on the site. Analysis of the standing structure, historical documents, and archaeological features, deposits, and recovered artifacts expand the museum’s interpretation of the 18th-, 19th-, and early 20th-century Chase House proprietors and occupants
