    Attending Stella Adler Studio\u27s Summer Conservatory helped me overcome fear of judgment in acting. The supportive environment and passionate peers made it comfortable to grow. I learned to handle intimate scenes and the importance of professionalism, like punctuality and line memorization. The industry\u27s challenges were addressed, teaching me to navigate discomfort professionally. Despite being tough, the experience was rewarding, enhancing both my acting skills and personal growth. Now, equipped with newfound tools, I aim to apply them here at SUNY Bing.     Alternative Vocabularies: What to do when LCSH isn\u27t enough

    Catalogers in the United States primarily use Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) to describe the resources in their libraries, but sometimes, there isn\u27t an LCSH term that is the right fit. Sometimes, terms are too broad or too narrow; occasionally, terms are simply outdated, and unfortunately, some are pejorative. When that happens, it\u27s time to introduce an alternative vocabulary into the cataloging workflow. This presentation will introduce four alternative subject heading vocabularies: Library of Congress Demographic Group Terms, Getty Art & Architecture Thesaurus, Rare Books and Manuscripts Controlled Vocabulary, and Homosaurus. Each vocabulary will be presented with a broad overview of where it can be found, what it\u27s particularly good at describing, and examples of what it would look like in a bibliographic record. The presentation will close with a decision tree to help catalogers decide when it might be time to look outside LCSH to describe their resources.     Critical Reading in STEM

    Critical Reading (CR) is the process of analyzing a scientific paper with the intent to determine the validity, reliability, rigor and contributions to the scientific scholarly conversation. CR is becoming an increasingly important skill for undergraduate students due to the increased publication of scientific literature, and the need to appraise the quality of that literature. CR skills have historically been an understudied topic, but there are documented methods for its instruction. These instruction methods range from one day faculty created activities and student-led course topics, such as POGIL, to courses centered around scientific literature comprehension using the C.R.E.A.T.E approach. The research presented will focus on the benefits of CR as a skill for STEM students and educators, the adaptability and limitations of several methods of instruction of CR, as well as recommendations to implement CR instruction.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2024/1103/thumbnail.jp

    Shuttered Perspectives: Censorship of Photography During World War I

    Liberties Victorious Conflict published by The Magazine Circulation Co. can be found in the Special Collections of Binghamton University. It is a series of chronological photographs through the First World War, each with a brief description. However, upon the first read of the book, the pictures seemed to be filled with propaganda for the US and British forces. That realization raised the question about the extent of censorship on photography in the First World War. These findings include informative articles and books describing what measures were placed so the government made sure they knew what photos were being released to the public.     Utilizing Electrical Geophysical Methods to Map Mycorrhizal Mycelium Networks Non-Invasively

    Mycorrhizal mycelium networks are a key component to forest health. These networks act as a transportation system for nutrients, are major players in carbon and nitrogen cycling, and can provide some level of drought resistance to the surrounding flora. Due to the location and size of these network’s filaments, studying mycelium non-invasively has been difficult. The alternative method of laboratory grown samples, lacks the important environmental factors that play into the growth and development of mycelium. Mycelium’s inherent conductivity and moisture retention allows for these networks to be a viable target for electrical geophysical equipment. CMD-Tiny, a small shallow depth conductivity meter, and a high frequency 1200 MHz Mala GPR system, also set for shallow depth investigation, were applied at 10 study sites in the Binghamton Nature Preserve to evaluate the feasibility of identifying mycelium non-invasively. These instruments were used in tandem successfully to map mycelium networks in situ for small field sites, and were confirmed with observational ground truthing. The development of a non-invasive method to study mycelium allows for scientists across a number of fields to more efficiently and more sustainably study these fungal networks

    Dynamic Changes in the Distribution of Hydrocodone and Oxycodone in Florida from 2006 to 2021

    Background: Florida, which led the country in terms of its number of opioid-prescribing physicians, was unique during the height of the opioid epidemic because of its lax prescribing laws and high number of unregulated pain clinics. Here, we address differences in the distribution rates of oxycodone and hydrocodone across Florida counties during the peak years of the opioid epidemic using an under-utilized database. Methods: The Washington Post and the United States Drug Enforcement Administration’s Automation of Reports and Consolidated Orders System (ARCOS) databases provided longitudinal oxycodone and hydrocodone distribution data in grams per county (2006–2014) and state (2006–2021). Grams of oxycodone and hydrocodone were converted into morphine milligram equivalents (MMEs). Results: There was a steep increase in oxycodone from 2006 to 2010, with a subsequent decline. In 2010, the average MME per person across Florida was 729.4, a 120.6% increase from 2006. The three counties with the highest MMEs per person in 2010 were Hillsborough (2271.3), Hernando (1915.3), and Broward (1726.9), and they were significantly (p \u3c 0.05) elevated relative to the average county. Conclusions: The data demonstrated pronounced differences in opioid distribution, particularly oxycodone, between Florida counties during the height of the opioid epidemic. Legislative action taken between 2009 and 2011 aligns with the considerable decline in opioid distribution after 2010

    Title-molecular diagnostics of dystrophinopathies in Sri Lanka towards phenotype predictions: an insight from a South Asian resource limited setting

    Background: The phenotype of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) and Becker muscular dystrophy (BMD) patients is determined by the type of DMD gene variation, its location, effect on reading frame, and its size. The primary objective of this investigation was to determine the frequency and distribution of DMD gene variants (deletions/duplications) in Sri Lanka through the utilization of a combined approach involving multiplex polymerase chain reaction (mPCR) followed by Multiplex Ligation Dependent Probe Amplification (MLPA) and compare to the international literature. The current consensus is that MLPA is a labor efficient yet expensive technique for identifying deletions and duplications in the DMD gene. Methodology: Genetic analysis was performed in a cohort of 236 clinically suspected pediatric and adult myopathy patients in Sri Lanka, using mPCR and MLPA. A comparative analysis was conducted between our findings and literature data. Results: In the entire patient cohort (n = 236), mPCR solely was able to identify deletions in the DMD gene in 131/236 patients (DMD-120, BMD-11). In the same cohort, MLPA confirmed deletions in 149/236 patients [DMD-138, BMD -11]. These findings suggest that mPCR has a detection rate of 95% (131/138) among all patients who received a diagnosis. The distal and proximal deletion hotspots for DMD were exons 45–55 and 6–15. Exon 45–60 identified as a novel in-frame variation hotspot. Exon 45–59 was a hotspot for BMD deletions. Comparisons with the international literature show significant variations observed in deletion and duplication frequencies in DMD gene across different populations. Conclusion: DMD gene deletions and duplications are concentrated in exons 45–55 and 2–20 respectively, which match global variation hotspots. Disparities in deletion and duplication frequencies were observed when comparing our data to other Asian and Western populations. Identified a 95% deletion detection rate for mPCR, making it a viable initial molecular diagnostic approach for low-resource countries where MLPA could be used to evaluate negative mPCR cases and cases with ambiguous mutation borders. Our findings may have important implications in the early identification of DMD with limited resources in Sri Lanka and to develop tailored molecular diagnostic algorithms that are regional and population specific and easily implemented in resource limited settings
