    A Material History of the Early Eighteenth-Century Cod Fishery in Canso, Nova Scotia

    In the early eighteenth century, Canso, Nova Scotia housed an influential Anglo-American fishing and trading community with far-reaching connections across Europe and the Americas. The islands were inhabited by a small permanent population joined each year by hundreds of migratory workers who established seasonal operations along their shores. Despite high hopes for long-term development, success would be short lived. Canso was a volatile space: the islands were contested territory and existed within a tense and turbulent frontier. The settlement was attacked multiple times and was destroyed in 1744. This paper draws upon new research and previous archaeological studies to discuss the social history and material life of the early eighteenth-century Canso fishery; in particular it focuses on the consumption patterns and living conditions of those who lived within this frontier community

    At the Death of Architecture: Frank Lloyd Wright\u27s Dreams of America in Japan

    In 1832, French writer Victor Hugo declares the death of the edifice as a result of the totalizing popularity of Gutenberg’s printing press since the fifteenth century. American architect Frank Lloyd Wright would echo this sentiment to an intrigued Chicago audience almost 70 years later in his 1901 lecture, “The Art and Craft of the Machine.” The argument went that architecture, chief among the arts, would employ ornament, applied art, and symbolic meaning to capture and spread lasting imprints of human thought before the book usurped this position on account of its greater efficiency in accomplishing the same ends. While many architects of his time were finding ways to circumvent use of machine technology in architecture, citing worsening qualities of industrial life among other ills, Wright sought instead to make a return to the very force that had killed architecture centuries earlier. Wright attempts to revive this once-central artform by inventing an original didactic architecture along with a prescribed almost spiritual set of values meant to be inherent to the United States and symbiotic with the machine

    A Bug’s-Eye View: Examining the Impact of The Bug Squad Exhibit at a Local Children’s Museum

    To be sustained and prosper as a business, children museums must appease the children while also retaining their caregivers. In this way, it is important to consider the interactive exhibits chosen for children that will spark play, creativity, engagement, and development. Hands-on playing is vital in the development of a child, as it promotes their ability to progress socially, emotionally, and cognitively. Specifically, The Bug Squad at the Discovery Center in Binghamton, NY targeted this need to play directly, as its combination of hands-on learning and activities gauged the attention of the children throughout the museum. The purpose of this mixed-methods research study was to understand the level of engagement throughout the various elements within the museum’s exhibit and how this level of engagement prompted these elements to remain permanent. Data was collected through observation of children’s engagement and a short, five question survey to understand the parent’s point of view. We hypothesize that the elements that expand beyond their main purpose and promote creativity and socialization will attract more engagement. These potential findings can contribute to the sustainability and retention rate of other Children Museums with the implementation of, The Bug Squad

    Nonparametric identification of a MEMS resonator actuated by levitation forces

    This work presents nonparametric identification of a Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) beam subjected to a non-classical nonlinear electrostatic (levitation) force. The approach is based on the Restoring Force Surface method and the Chebyshev polynomials. The study examines the main challenges associated with the used approach as applied to small-scale systems, such as the inability to measure the restoring force and acceleration. In this work, we use a mix of analytical techniques, experimental data, and Lagrange polynomial interpolation to estimate the restoring forces of the system and its nonlinearities. The extracted results are compared with the measurements, which show excellent agreement. Results are shown for several cases of forcing strength (voltage loads). The results reveal for some cases quadratic terms for the velocity indicating nonlinear damping, which cannot be revealed using parametric identification methods with a priori assumed forms. It is shown that the extracted nonlinear model is robust enough to predict the dynamical behavior of the beam even when the voltage load is increased to nearly 300 % more than the one used for model identification. The presented approach can be applied to other micro and nano systems to identify their characteristics and reveal their nonlinear stiffness and damping parameters

    Safety of enoxaparin in patients implanted with continuous flow left ventricular assist devices

    Background: The objective of this study is to determine the incidence of major bleeding events in patients implanted with continuous flow left ventricular assist devices (CF-LVADs) bridged with enoxaparin (LMWH) compared to intravenous unfractionated heparin (IV UFH) for a subtherapeutic INR on warfarin. Methods: A single-center, retrospective, cohort study was conducted including patients with CF-LVADs implanted between January 1, 2012 and July 1, 2020 who received at least one inpatient dose or outpatient prescription for LMWH or IV UFH at least 60 days after CF-LVAD implantation. The primary endpoint was the incidence of major bleeding. Results: In total, 176 orders were screened and 90 orders in 62 unique patients were included. Major bleeding and thromboembolic events occurred in 1 (2.5%) versus 4 (10.0%) orders (p = 0.36) and 3 (7.5%) versus 1 (2.5%) orders (p = 0.62) in the LMWH and IV UFH groups, respectively. One patient had a fatal thromboembolic event in each group. More patients receiving IV UFH had minor bleeding events (10 [25.0%] vs. 3 [7.5%]; p = 0.03). Conclusions: There was no difference between bleeding and thromboembolic events in patients implanted with CF-LVADs prescribed LMWH or IV UFH for bridging of subtherapeutic INRs. Larger prospective randomized data are needed to validate these findings
