    Snake Pills and Angry Tennyson: A Deep Dive into the Advertising Network within Charles Dickens’ Dombey and Son

    Dombey and Son (In Parts) by Charles Dickens is a nineteen-part novel that was released between 1846-1848 in England. Each section of the story is surrounded by advertisements. This makes it uniquely valuable for learning more about English society at the time as well as the growth of marketing. My research analyzes the various advertisements present in the pamphlets– especially medical and cosmetic. What are the possibly harmful effects of the unregulated medical advertisements? What do the cosmetic marketing campaigns say about beauty standards for women? How do these advertisements compare to those from the modern era? In the second part of my project, I delve into the lyrical advertisements commissioned by E. Moses and Son, and their possible interaction with British poet Alfred Tennyson.     Intraspecific Variability in Neuroterus saltatorius Populations throughout its Range: Unveiling Dynamics of Anthropogenic-Driven Range Expansions

    Species are expanding their ranges in response to anthropogenic change. Neuroterus saltatorius is an oak gall wasp that is expanding its range poleward in North American western oak savannas. We aim to unravel intraspecific genetic variation in N. saltatorius along a latitudinal gradient, and in the native and expanded range to discern potential genetic differences in wasps collected from different locations, and to attempt to discern the source populations for the range-expanding populations. We performed DNA extraction, PCR amplification, and sequencing from N. saltatorius collected from sites along its range. Geneious prime was used to align sequences and create phylogenetic trees to create clades and discern potential genetic differences among populations. Anticipated outcomes may reveal source locations for range-expanding populations. Additionally, this study establishes a groundwork for future investigations, unveiling adaptive strategies in wasps amid environmental shifts.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2024/1028/thumbnail.jp

    The Relationship Between College Students and Eyewitness Identification

    Forensic psychology research has predominantly focused on analyzing eyewitness identification reliability and the factors associated with it. This study is further adding to this research topic by examining the relationships between academic concentrations and classifications on eyewitness identification. A Qualtrics survey was created to collect data from a large number and variety of participants. The 252 students who answered the survey watched a simulated theft, completed three distractor tasks, and then were presented with a target-present or target-absent simultaneous lineup. They subsequently made an identification or rejected the lineup, gave a confidence rating, and provided their demographic information. While there were a limited number of concentrations, interesting patterns suggest the classification, as well as if they’ve declared a major, are related to their accuracy and reported confidence.     The Impact of Food Insecurity and Diet on Intensity of Physical Activity

    Food insecurity is a pressing issue among the college population, leading to poor diet quality and increased stress. However, research on the relationship between food insecurity and physical activity is limited. To study this relationship, an anonymous online survey was distributed using social media platforms. The survey included questions regarding food insecurity, physical activity, and diet quality. Data were analyzed using Pearson Correlation Coefficient in SPSS Version 28.0. Food insecurity was negatively correlated with the number of days spent doing physical activity (r = -0.164, p \u3c 0.01). The number of days spent exercising was positively correlated with consuming dark leafy vegetables (r = 0.229, p\u3c0.01). These findings suggest that students experiencing food insecurity are less likely to participate in physical activity, and those participating in more physical activity have better diet quality. Hence, decreasing food insecurity among college students may promote overall health and wellbeing.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2024/1014/thumbnail.jp

    An Enlarged SNAP vs. a Universal Basic Income: Estimating the Health Impacts

    Food insecurity leads to increases in chronic diseases, which have profound costs for individual health, families, and society. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) has evolved since its inception in 1939 with the overarching purpose of providing food benefits to those in the most need. This benefit is currently offered to only twelve percent of the United States population, but the research suggests that an increase in the monthly allotment and or expansion of the economic qualifications would benefit health outcomes. Some have proposed that a Universal Basic Income (UBI) would be more effective than targeted food vouchers. This project assesses why a targeted SNAP program could benefit health outcomes as compared to a broad UBI. Drawing on nutritional and medical research, government statistics, professional treatment guidelines, and surveys/interviews with current healthcare professionals, I argue that a refocused and expanded SNAP program could improve health outcomes more than a UBI.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2024/1049/thumbnail.jp

    Synthesis and Characterization of Derivatives of UCPH-101 as Novel Inhibitors Targeting SLC1 Amino Acid Transporter Family

    Nitrogen is an important element that exists in many biological compounds essential for the cells’ survivability. Due to rapid growth and proliferation, cancer cells demand large amounts of nitrogen, specifically from glutamine. ASCT2 transporters are found to be overexpressed in many types of cancers. The inhibition of ASCT2 is proposed to induce cell starvation. EAAT1 (SLC1A3) and ASCT2 (SLC1A5) exhibit similar allosteric inhibition mechanisms. Previous experiments showed that UCPH-101 allosterically binds to EAATs and inhibits their translocation activity. While the mechanism is unknown, the molecule was shown to be a partial inhibitor of ASCT2. We hypothesized that alteration of the side chain of UCPH-101 is expected to lead to different inhibition constants (Ki) and percentages of the molecules on ASCT2 and the inhibition mechanism of UCPH-101 can be obtained from inhibition studies using UCPH derivatives. These inhibitors are chemically synthesized, characterized using patch-clamp electrophysiology, and tested using cytotoxicity assay.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2024/1148/thumbnail.jp

    The Impact of Improper Face Mask Disposal on the Early Growth and Development of Tomato Plants (Solanum lycopersicum)

    Disposable face masks (DFMs) play an important preventive factor in the COVID-19 pandemic. The increased use of DFMs leads to the increased load of face mask litter in the environment. This study focuses on the effects of DFMs leachate on plants with a variety of DFM (traditional, black, leopard, camouflage, holiday, and rainbow) and conditions (new and used). The mortality, shoot size, number of visible leaves, average leaf size, total root length, number of roots, root convex area, and mass of the shoots and roots were collected. The data was analyzed using ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis, and pairwise tests. There were no statistically significant differences in mortality between the groups, however, there were some statistically significant differences in other measures between types of DFMs and between the conditions of the traditional and black groups.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2024/1151/thumbnail.jp
