Inflammatory protein associations with brain MRI measures: Framingham Offspring Cohort
INTRODUCTION: Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and inflammatory biomarkers are crucial for investigating preclinical neurocognitive disorders. Current investigations focus on a few inflammatory markers. The study aims to investigate the associations between inflammatory biomarkers and MRI measures and to examine sex differences among the associations in the Framingham Heart Study. METHODS: Dementia and stroke-free participants underwent OLINK Proteomics profiling and MRI measurements within 5 years. Pairwise cross-sectional analysis assessed 68 biomarkers with 13 brain MRI volumes, adjusting for covariates and familial correlations. RESULTS: Elevated CDCP1, IL6, OPG, and 4E.BP1 were related to smaller total cerebral brain volume (TCBV), whereas higher HGF, IL8, and MMP10 were associated with smaller TCBV, total and frontal white matter volumes. Higher SCF and TWEAK were associated with larger TCBV. In sex-stratified analyses, associations were observed exclusively among males. DISCUSSION: We report several associations between inflammatory biomarkers and brain volumes, highlighting different associations within sex subgroups

In January 2024, the Technical Services team at Binghamton University launched an informal, monthly linked data study group. These meetings create space to discuss, research, and ask open questions about linked data projects and how they could be integrated into our daily workflows. This lightning talk will explain what the group formation looked like, resources we\u27ve used to learn together, what we\u27ve accomplished, and what we hope to accomplish in the future. Trust in government and policies of the COVID-19 pandemic: the before and after comparison in the European sample
This research explores the relationship between COVID-19 policies and mortality rates and the level of trust in government in Europe. This study looks at the stringency of measures, as well as their effectiveness as shown through high or low mortality rates, to see if there is a relationship between those factors and increases or decreases in trust in 2020. The Eurobarometer is the dataset for trust in government, with a focus on the data from Summer 2020, the first Eurobarometer after COVID-19 began. The Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center was used for cumulative mortality, and Shvetsova et al., 2022 provided the data on Protective Policy Index, showing policy stringency. Trust increased in the average of the sample in the summer of 2020. Trust most increased in countries with stringent policies (PPI \u3e0.6 on April 24, 2020), and with high mortality (\u3e 10/100k deaths by May 1 2020). This showed that while stringent policies may be associated with a higher increase in trust, the effectiveness of those policies (which would lead to lower mortality rates) was not the main factor behind why those policies led to an increase in trust. Countries with stringent policies and either high or low mortality had a larger increase in trust than countries with non-stringent policies and high or low mortality
An Inconvenient Corpse: Settler Adaptation to Winter Death and Burial through Structural and Oral History
While the archaeology of death and burial is a popular avenue of research, considerations for burial practices during winter months in northerly climates when temperatures regularly drop below 0°C / 32°F aren’t regularly considered. Excavations in search of the early 17th-century burials associated with Sir George Calvert’s English colony in Ferryland, Newfoundland considered different options for winter body disposal. While burial on land presented the most plausible option in the colonial period, deaths during the winter would have posed a problem for settlers. With limited options for digging in frozen ground, the storage of dead bodies during the winter became commonplace throughout North America. The practice dominated the northeast coast in particular, but was not the only option. This paper explores the logistics of early winter burial practices such as winter storage and grave digging through structural evidence and oral testimony, and considers how these practices were adapted throughout the 18th to 21st centuries
Bias in Cataloging: Calligraphy
A book can exist only on one shelf, but books are rarely one-dimensional. A single book can sit at the intersection of multiple topics, ranging from philosophy, to medicine, to agriculture, so how are they organized? It’s simpler with digital cataloging, as multiple subject headings and topics can be assigned to any one book—a book can sit on more than one shelf in the digital world. Physical copies, however, are not given this luxury. Catalogers must decide, essentially based on their own opinions, where to place them within a short time frame. To explore how human bias factors into the organizations of collections, this project will delve into the Binghamton collections cataloged under the “Decorative Arts” section of the Library of Congress Call Numbers, focusing on the differences between cataloging of Western Calligraphy and Chinese Calligraphy.https://orb.binghamton.edu/library_research_scholars_2024/1000/thumbnail.jp
Multiscale Channelized Biomimetic Scaffolds for Tissue Vascularization
Tissue engineering aims to address organ failure through engineered tissues. My research focuses on creating biomimetic scaffolds with ideal biomechanical properties and biocompatibility, utilizing 3D printing, bioprinting, electrospinning and molding. We electrospun microtubes with over 5 um in diameter to mimic capillary vessels, which provides topography for cell attachment, growth, proliferation, and vascularization. Combining scissored microtubes with hydrogels, composite scaffolds can be bioprinted with improved scaffold strength and cell viability. To reduce cell damage during bioprinting, slow-gelling material was introduced and molded into 3D-printed sacrificial molds to fabricate hydrogel scaffolds. Future steps involve integrating electrospun microtubes with slow-gelled hydrogel scaffolds to create multiscale structures.
