    “They wear this hideous makeup all over their face”: Dirty Girls and the Grrrl-Hag

    Filmed at the height of riot grrrl, the documentary Dirty Girls presents a microcosm of the scene at a Santa Monica high school as it follows a group of girls ostracized by the student body due to their opposition to and negation of standard models of early 1990s beauty. This paper aims to situate riot grrrl and the “dirty girls” into larger contexts of the historical oppression of women, that, when viewed beyond the specificities of their given period, illustrate recurring patterns that involve the negative depiction of older women, denoted as “old hags” in the Middle Ages and Early Modern Period. Despite their common conflict with sexist beauty standards, Harper and Amber of Dirty Girls and the old hag responded to their marginalization in vastly different ways: where the hag is portrayed as vainly attempting to capitulate to societal conventions, the “dirty girls” see their negation both as a strength and as a means towards their political and social ends. In this paper, I argue that despite their differences and the chronological distance between the two phenomena, the hags and the “dirty girls” and riot grrrl are connected through their relationships to contemporary beauty standards. Specifically, the “dirty girls” function as another kind of hag, the grrrl-hag, one that responds to oppressive beauty standards differently than the old hag, by negating the beauty standards and societal expectations expected of and imposed on women and girls, creating their own visions of woman- and girlhood

    Impact of Node Failures on Productivity in Multilayer Supply Chain Networks: An Influence Network Analysis in the Indian Electronics Sector

    Supply chain networks are essential for the delivery of goods and information, but disruptions such as natural disasters or trade embargoes can severely impact them. Resilience of entire networks under different types of disruptions when nodes or edges fail has been extensively studied. However, the extent to which the failure of a particular company affects another company of interest within a network has not been widely explored. To address this, we created a multilayer physical supply chain network of companies in an electronics supply chain concentrated in India. Through systematic node removal simulations, we examined how the productivity of one company is impacted by the removal of another. Extending these simulations to include all possible combinations of companies yielded an influence network that represents interdependence among nodes in terms of productivity. We observed that removing a critical node could lead to not only a decrease but, quite counter-intuitively, an increase as well in the productivity of affected nodes. This study identifies the factors that influence these productivity changes and offers insights to supply chain managers to maintain network resilience in the face of node failures

    The Distributed Ghost with independence - a study on computational ability of skewed asynchronous cellular automata

    This paper explores the computational ability of ``distributed ghost cellular automata (CA) \cite{10.1162/artl_e_00450} after introducing independence in the updating scheme. Traditionally, the CA system dictates all cells to update together following the concept of the global clock. To introduce independence in the system, CA researchers have introduced the notion of fully asynchronous updating scheme with atomicity property where, again, the CA system dictates two neighbouring cells not to update together. In this study, we explore the skewed asynchronous system after breaking the atomicity property. Specifically, we study the computational ability of the proposed skewed asynchronous system in the context of the density classification problem. In this direction, the first theoretical study includes identification of two attractor (all 00 and all 11) skewed asynchronous system (here, 1313 candidate ECA rules) after considering the problem statement of density classification. Next, following the basins of attraction dynamics of the two attractor systems, we consider ECA rules 170170,~178178 and 184184 as candidates for this distributed consensus problem. Finally, we demonstrate the computational ability (i.e., efficiency) of the proposed cellular system with independence during density classification

    Modeling heterogeneity in cognitive trajectories in the Framingham Heart Study

    Introduction: The prevalence of cognitive impairment in the population is growing; however, there is substantial heterogeneity in the rate of decline across different cognitive domains. Harmonized factor scores measuring memory, executive function, and language domains have been created in the Framingham Heart Study (FHS). Methods: This work identified FHS participants with two or more repeated factor scores after age 60 and fitted latent class mixed models (LCMM) to cluster cognitive trajectories within each domain. Non-linear shapes of trajectories were modeled piecewise linearly, followed by stepwise selections to select cluster-specific change points. Results: We identified different latent classes of participants with early cognitive decline, compared to late decliners, for each domain. Ten-fold cross-validation yielded stable subgroupings. Our findings show latent-class-related differential patterns in cognitive aging in the FHS. We also investigated the association between identified latent classes with existing protein biomarkers of cognitive aging in a subsample of the study and found elevated levels of CD40L and CD14 were associated with a higher risk of early decline in memory and executive function domain, respectively. Discussion: In summary, our study advances the understanding of cognitive decline heterogeneity among FHS participants and sets the stage for further investigations into early intervention strategies and personalized approaches to mitigate cognitive aging risks

    Exposure-response of serum biomarkers to vamorolone, a dissociative corticosteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, in 4- to \u3c7-year children

    Objectives: Corticosteroid agonists of the glucocorticoid receptor are a mainstay of therapeutics for pro-inflammatory conditions. Vamorolone is a novel partial agonist that is differentiated from the other members of the corticosteroid class by non-metabolism by 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenases, antagonism of the mineralocorticoid receptor, and differential co-factor binding. Our objective was to define the pharmacodynamic response of serum proteins to vamorolone. Methods: Clinical trial participants with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (4 to \u3c 7 yr; n = 39; mean [SD] age = 5.3 [1.0]) enrolled in a multiple ascending dose study of vamorolone were studied (24-fold dose range). Dose-response and exposure–response of 1,305 serum proteins were defined by intra-subject longitudinal changes (baseline vs. Day 14). Results: Dose-response analysis identified 159 of 1,305 serum proteins as dose-responsive to vamorolone (12 % of proteins tested; 20 % increased, 80 % decreased). Two inflammatory networks showed drug-responsive suppression. One centered on extracellular serine proteases and lymphotoxins (PI3, KLK7, KLK8, KLK11, lympho-toxins A, B) converging on NFκB. The second centered on cytokines (CCL22/MDC, CCL21, CCL14, CXCL12) and IL23 signaling. In the IL23 network, acutely responsive anti-inflammatory proteins included increases of an inhibitor of IL17 signaling (IL17RC) and decreases of IL23 (IL12B:IL23A). A protein associated with resistance to environmental microbes, PTP1C, showed strong induction and is a novel candidate for aspects of corticosteroid efficacy. Two networks of cell-associated proteins were identified as drug responsive that may represent muscle tissue response (efficacy): connective tissue remodeling upstream of Notch signaling, and plasma membrane proteins impinging on AKT1 signaling.     Students of Color at Predominantly White Institutions—The Experience

    Today, many people in society advocate for higher education. Parents, above all, are usually the biggest advocates for education. While this support is necessary, important, and appreciated by all students, especially by minority students, encouragement from our loved ones only signify the tip of the iceberg. This is because of the grueling experience that many students of color face at predominantly white institutions. Only then is the magnitude of said support put to the ultimate test, raising the question of how far support from family and peers really gets you when navigating a system that may not have been tailored to facilitate the success of Black and brown students alike. Minority students who attend school at predominantly white institutions tend to have more to worry about aside from the everyday coursework stresses, social life, and even finance—universal problems shared by all students. What creates the separation between minority students and their white peers is the racial bias, economic status, and systemic prejudice that minority students experience, along with the universal problems shared by all college students. In the thesis, I will examine the nature of these institutionalized racial problems and explain the importance of leveling out the playing field of college experience, for all students despite their race. I will identify and examine some of the contributing factors that reinforce this unfortunate structural and institutional imbalance of experience among students of color and their white peers. Secondly; I will examine the relevant literature that has been produced on the topic to show its importance to society at large and to secure the foundation for my argument. Thirdly; I will do so against the backdrop of critical race theory, affirmative action, and other relevant themes to reinforce my overall claim regarding the grueling experiences many Black and minority students face at predominantly white institutions, as opposed to their white peers. Lastly, I will analyze the systems that are in place in the higher education system that keep these difficult experiences alive by bringing to the fore, the history of the U.S. and the lived experiences of what many minority, most especially Black students, like myself, have been through, while making a connection to society at large. This research is important because it brings to light an issue that many Black and brown students face in silence while pursuing their dreams—whether working or studying— to have a successful career after school. While working and studying, they have to give their all to make it to the finish line and become a first-generation graduate in their families. Society at large must be made aware of these challenges, because it does not just negatively affect Black and brown students, it also unfairly benefits white students. This spotlight on the experiences of Black and brown students at predominantly white institutions serves as a beacon for change, since it impacts how we navigate the world around us, the racial prejudices we encounter, and the relationships with ourselves and our peers. Our relationships and how we view them hold great importance because they shape our society and the way in which it functions
