Campus Community Partnerships to Reduce Asthma Burden in a Local Community
Get PDFAvoidable ER visits due to asthma stress an overburdened healthcare system. Shortened primary care visits, appointment delays, and lack of access related to insurance leave minimal opportunity for asthma education. Community partnerships between Nursing Schools, community organizations, and local schools can address this need to improve health outcomes for a community. Undergraduate students are certified by ALA as program facilitators to provide asthma education in schools. Through this training, students acquire community and population health skills, and develop a broader asthma education framework to achieve a greater reach for children and youth with asthma. 368 undergraduate students have been trained since Spring 2015. \u3e700 children received asthma education throughout 15 school districts and two Head Start Centers. From Fascination to Fear: Perceptions of Transness in Postwar America
Get PDFA common piece of American transphobic rhetoric holds the belief that transness is a “new” concept, or merely a trend of the 21st century. Yet publicly out trans figures, such as Christine Jorgensen, have been advocating for transgender rights since the 1950s––and, indeed, were treated shockingly well by the media. This discrepancy reveals how perceptions of transness have changed with time: as transness has become more public and common, it has become a convenient scapegoat within American political campaigns. Drawing on understudied trans print culture such as the magazine Transvestia and the FtM newsletter (from the 1960s and 1980s, respectively), this paper seeks to track this shift, and understand how conditions have developed and perhaps worsened. As transgender individuals have altered their own terminology and fought to be understood, beginning with the work highlighted in these archives, they have only become an easier target. Lessons from the History of Automation: The Case of the Luddites
Get PDFThe consequences of technological innovation on work and employment are hotly debated in the US today. While many fear that new technology like AI automation will supplant human workers, others argue that innovation will create new jobs to compensate for this loss. However, unemployment is only one of the effects. Offering a historical parallel to this contemporary debate, this project turns to the British industrial revolution and the textile workers’ Luddite movement that responded to income and job losses with protests and machine-breaking. While on the surface level, the story of Luddites seems like one about technological unemployment, further analysis reveals other consequences such as deskilling, less worker power, and an increase in social unrest. To What Extent Did the Holocaust Impact the Development of the State of Israel?
Get PDFA point of debate is whether the Holocaust led to the development of the State of Israel. This paper takes the stance that the State of Israel would have been established regardless of the Holocaust. However, the Holocaust acted as a catalyst that propelled Israel to declare independence in 1948. The paper will examine the situation in the pre-WWI Ottoman Empire, the Zionist movement before 1917, and the British stance prior to WWII. The year 1945 will serve as a turning point in addressing the extent to which the Holocaust influenced the 1948 declaration of independence. The roles of the British, United States, USSR, and United Nations will be analyzed to provide a comprehensive understanding of this issue. Additionally, the paper will explore the Arab perspective. Substance Use and Lifestyle Choices Among College Students
Get PDFSubstance use, a predominant issue across college campuses, significantly impacts various lifestyle choices and behaviors, such as sleep, nutrition, exercise, and personality traits. This study aims to identify correlations between these lifestyle choices and substance use habits. An anonymous online survey was administered through Google services and sent via email, GroupMe, and Messenger. This survey included basic demographic questions and questions on ADHD Medication and Substance use, Nutrition and Lifestyle choices, and Personality type. Data was analyzed using Pearson’s Correlation Analysis in SPSS version 28.0. The findings show a negative correlation between the use of substances and viewing oneself as disciplined/dependable (p\u3c0.05). There was additionally a negative correlation between sleep pattern satisfaction and use of marijuana (p\u3c0.01). Asthma Case Finding in Head Start Children
Get PDFHead Start children are at higher asthma risk. Disparities in social determinants of health may contribute to this disparity. It is essential to identify those children at risk for adverse outcomes to prevent the airway remodeling associated with uncontrolled asthma.This descriptive correlational study surveyed parents of children enrolled in Head Start on respiratory symptoms indicative of possible asthma to determine asthma prevalence and asthma risk in 2015 and 2025. 2015: N= 133. Asthma rate 17.2% with many potentially uncontrolled ( 20% wheezing, 26% cough lasting \u3e one week; 30% difficulty sleeping due to cough;11% ER visit or admitted; 9% missed school). 2025: Data is currently being collected for comparable analysis.These findings show unsettling rates of asthma risk in the Head Start population. Blight to Bright: Pioneering Post-Industrial Cities as Sustainability Hubs
Get PDFBinghamton, NY is a northeastern city that holds incredible potential, yet possesses dilapidation and blight after having been a former hub for industry and production. One of the first things students notice when attending its SUNY campus is widespread poverty, abandoned buildings, and unhoused people in Binghamton proper, yet as one travels further into the suburbs, the facades become wealthier. While there are efforts to revitalize the city, several solutions could immediately address problems of job scarcity, food deserts, and urban blight. According to the Climate Clock, humanity has just slightly over 4 years to reduce global warming down to 1.5℃. Put simply, there’s an urgent need for people to take actionable measures to continue having a planet that can sustain human life. The Relationship Between Social Media, Nutrition, and Coping Mechanisms in College Students
Get PDFSocial media influences the health of young adults in various ways, including its effects on nutritional choices and coping mechanisms during stressful situations. This study aimed to explore the relationship between social media use and negative eating behaviors, including disordered eating and unhealthy food consumption. Using an anonymous survey distributed throughout the Binghamton University campus, 805 total responses were gathered from participants aged 18 years or older. The survey included basic demographic questions and questions on social media use and nutrition. The Pearson Correlation Coefficient was used to analyze data in SPSS version 28.0. The results show a positive statistical correlation between disordered eating and consumption of unhealthy sugary and fast foods. There was also a positive correlation between disordered eating behaviors, and fear of weight gain were positively correlated with being uninterested in hobbies or other activities due to social media usage. This research highlights how social media directly influences disordered eating and coping mechanisms, ultimately impacting nutritional habits.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2025/1153/thumbnail.jp
From an Object to a Relic: How Names can Enhance a Book
Get PDFThe first few pages of an 1820s copy of The Taming of the Shrew are bursting with names: the writer (William Shakespeare) and the playbook’s rewriter, publisher, and editor, the artist and engraver, and the actor that this book belonged to. But what can really be seen from the names of a book? By tracing each of these names across a range of sources, from their other publications to nasty theater reviews, this project illuminates how people can turn a book from an object to a relic. It demonstrates how some of the people involved can add background to a book and its history: how they could be so famous or popular in their time despite their names being washed out, or how these people have worked together on so many previous works.
