Analysis of Systematic Trade-offs between Military and Healthcare Expenditure alongside GDP Growth of Select Asian and Western Exporting Economies in the 21st Century
This study explores the complexity in the trade-offs between military expenditure, healthcare expenditure, and GDP growth across select Asian nations and major weapon-exporting countries, examining how nations allocate finite resources between national security and human well-being over the past two decades. Using a systems science approach, the research integrates Granger causality testing to analyze temporal and directional relationships among GDP growth, military expenditure, and healthcare expenditure, uncovering their dynamic interdependencies. The methodology includes trend and slope analysis, Granger causality testing, outlier detection, and clustering to identify heterogeneity in resource allocation strategies. Developed, weapon-exporting nations exhibit complementary trends, with strong causality between GDP growth and healthcare expenditure, reflecting economic stability and balanced allocation patterns. In contrast, developing Asian nations display fragmented and volatile relationships due to resource constraints and inefficiencies. Outlier analysis reveals country-specific dynamics, such as conflict-driven spending in Afghanistan and Myanmar and growth-focused strategies in China. Temporal trends show that economic crises, like the COVID-19 pandemic, significantly disrupt GDP growth but have limited long-term effects on healthcare or military expenditures. Clustering analysis identifies distinct groups of nations, shaped by economic capacity and geopolitical pressures. The findings emphasize the need for tailored policy frameworks to balance national security and human well-being, particularly in developing nations facing structural challenges. For sustainable development, policies must align resource allocation with economic priorities, geopolitical contexts, and societal needs
Genomic and Proteomic Analyses of Bacterial Communities of Ixodes scapularis Ticks from Broome County, New York
The microbial communities of Ixodes scapularis, the primary vector of Lyme disease in North America, exhibit regional variations that may affect pathogen transmission and vector competence. We analyzed bacterial communities in I. scapularis ticks collected from Broome County, New York, using 16S rRNA gene sequencing (18 ticks) as well as mass spectrometry-based proteomics (36 ticks). According to the 16S rRNA analysis, the endosymbiont Rickettsia buchneri was the most abundant species, with significantly higher (p = 0.0011) abundance in females (54.76%) compared to males (31.15%). We detected Borreliella burgdorferi in 44.44% of ticks and Anaplasma phagocytophilum in two nymphs but in high relative abundances (12.73% and 46.46%). Male ticks exhibited higher bacterial diversity, although the community composition showed no significant clustering by sex or life stage. Co-occurrence analysis revealed negative associations between R. buchneri and Pseudomonas (p = 0.0245), but no associations with B. burgdorferi. Proteomic analysis identified 12 R. buchneri-specific proteins, additionally detecting the protozoan pathogen Babesia microti in 18.18% of females. These findings provide the first comprehensive characterization of I. scapularis microbiomes in the Southern Tier region of New York and suggest broader distribution of R. buchneri across tick life stages than previously recognized, with potential implications for pathogen transmission dynamics

Quantifying Diachroneity and Refining Biostratigraphy in the Mid-Latitudes: Integrating Foraminiferal and Nannofossil Records from the Northwest Pacific
Accurate age models are essential for reconstructing past oceanographic conditions, refining the geologic time scale, and guiding resource exploration. Planktic foraminifera and calcareous nannofossils remain the most reliable tools for first-order age control due to their widespread distribution and rapid evolution. While tropical-subtropical biozonation schemes are well-documented for the Cenozoic, their applicability to mid-latitudes is uncertain due to regional oceanographic variations and species\u27 diachroneity. In the Northwest Pacific, previous studies have documented diachroneity in planktic foraminifera, but no work has investigated nannofossil diachroneity. This study will address this gap by examining whether similar diachronous trends exist in nannofossils and quantifying such diachroneity. This presentation will focus on Site 1208, located under the modern position of the Kuroshio Current Extension, to determine the degree of diachroneity of calcareous nannoplankton compared to species’ calibrated ages from other parts of the world ocean.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2025/1198/thumbnail.jp

The Roles of CUP1, SSU1, and Mitochondrial DNA in Copper Tolerance in Wild Yeasts
Understanding the genetic basis of complex traits remains a central challenge in biology. In Saccharomyces cerevisiae, copper resistance is a multifactorial trait shaped by both genetic and environmental influences, yet its underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. The genes CUP1 and SSU1 are known to influence copper resistance, though how these genes interact with each other and with mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) variation in wild yeast populations is unknown. I hypothesized that the genes CUP1 and SSU1 and variation in mtDNAs contribute to copper resistance in wild yeasts independently and through genetic interactions. To test this, I measured copper resistance across wild yeast isolates and while CUP1 copy number positively correlated with resistance, this relationship is weakened by SSU1 translocation. I then replaced the mtDNA from wild strains with the mtDNA from strain NCYC110 and found that it reduced copper resistance in a strain-specific manner. Additionally, I identified a significant interaction between CUP1 and SSU1, where SSU1 genotype modifies the effect of CUP1 copy number on copper resistance independent of mitochondrial background. Together, this work provides insight into the genetic complexity of copper resistance and suggests the importance of considering mitonuclear interactions in studies of complex traits
Intelligibility of Hebrew between Hasidim and Israelis in Upstate New York
This project investigates possible one-way or mutual intelligibility between spoken Israeli Hebrew and Hasidic Hebrew, testing intelligibility and biases through a matched-guise study. Volunteers from three groups— Israelis, Chabad Hasidim, non-Chabad Hasidim— listen to recordings in both types of Hebrew and their level of understanding and impressions of the speaker are recorded. There is a history of hostility between these groups in both countries, and some groups of American Hasidim are taught some Israeli Hebrew but most are not. Whether one group can understand the other would not only show how different the accents or dialects are but also how receptive listeners are to the other group and how much experience they have with the dialect, revealing the current state of hostility between groups. Preliminary research suggests that many Hasidim can understand Israeli Hebrew while most Israelis cannot understand Hasidic Hebrew.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2025/1010/thumbnail.jp
From Property to Patriarchy: Thomas Spence and Women’s Economic Rights
In the 1790s, growing calls for women’s economic independence and social participation intersected with the radical ideas of Thomas Spence, a vocal advocate for common land ownership and rent sharing. As feminist thought gained momentum, debates over women’s roles in public and economic life intensified. Spence’s vision promised a basic income for all, but the depth of his commitment to women’s financial autonomy remains uncertain, especially as his writings evolved over time. This paper examines Spence’s key works alongside contemporary feminist critiques, including those of Mary Wollstonecraft, to assess whether his radical philosophy genuinely included women or merely leveraged their struggles to advance his political agenda. By analyzing Spence’s philosophical development, feminist discourse, and comparative critique, this study traces how Spence’s views on gendered economic rights evolved and considers their relevance to broader proto-feminist movements demanding systemic social and economic change.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2025/1023/thumbnail.jp
