    Saprobic and parasitic; grows on Eastern Hemlocks; in North America, range comprises the northern Midwest and the Northeast, as well as along the Appalachian mountains. Polypore with bracket shelves that become wider and more shell-shaped as mushroom ages. Some specimens have a visible stem that extends perpendicular from the tree. Cap surface is lacquered. Color of the stem and part of the shelf closest to it ranges from dark brown to dark orange. Color becomes progressively more orange, then more yellow as the mushroom extends further out, and the outer edge is white. As the mushroom ages, the color changes first at the outer edge progressively more inward - the white becomes yellow, the yellow becomes more orange, and the orange becomes crimson until the entire mushroom ranges from brick red to deep crimson to deep brown. Loses its lacquered surface over time. The hymenium is covered with small pores that are originally white and darken to brown as the mushroom ages. Ganoderma tsugae is one species in a group of mushrooms known as Reishi, which have long been used in traditional medicine, most notably in China (La Clair et al. 2011). This species in particular has been found to mitigate prostate cancer cell growth when administered in an ethanol extract form (Huang et al. 2019). Furthermore, Ganoderma tsugae has been shown to be effective against allergic asthma (Chen et al. 2015). The decrease in the eastern hemlock population has led to an increase in the population of Ganoderma tsugae, which may be contributing to the increase in the numbers of pleasing fungus beetles in certain areas (Elliott et al. 2019).     Alone or in clusters in hardwoods near hardwoods, on rotting wood or the ground; widely distributed in North America. Cartilaginous; white to cream with hints of yellow or pink; cap 1-5 cm, grainy texture, typically fused with cap only at top, occasionally saddle shaped, frequently with many irregular lobes, furry on underside, thin; stipe ribbed, 3-10 cm long. Common throughout North America and Europe, although studies have cited its collection in South Africa as well (Anderson and Ickis 1921; Dissing 1966; Abbot and Curra 1997a; Abbot and Curra 1997b; Rasalanavho et al. 2019). Morphologically similar macrofungi collected in China have previously been identified as H. Crispa, however recent studies found that these fungi are morphologically and phylogenetically distinct from samples collected in North America and Europe.     Cultivating Historic Farms: A Study of Late-Nineteenth Century Maryland Farms

    This study examines late-19th century farmsteads in Anne Arundel County, Maryland to measure and explain changes in agriculture and the effect of farming strategies on the local landscape. Agricultural census data from 1850–1880 in the county’s First Election District are used to measure significant changes in crop production after the Civil War. From this local level analysis, one farmstead is analyzed to understand those agricultural changes at the household level. Results from exploratory statistics, two-sided independent t tests, and one-way analysis of variances demonstrate that mean production of tobacco, wheat, and corn decreased significantly in the decades after the Civil War. Evidence from archival and preliminary archaeological data at the Sellman House Site (18NA1431) and the Brown House Site (18AN1546) demonstrate that the Sellman’s relied heavily on tobacco as their cash crop for market agriculture, while the tenant farmers practiced subsistence farming. Materials recovered from shovel tests around the Sellman House show a lack of artifacts identified for agricultural use while shovel testing around the Brown House recovered farm tools and fragments of canning jars and canning lids. These results provide a foundation with which to test new theories about correlations between domestic and agricultural spaces, land management strategies, and the environmental consequences of those strategies over generations of use

    Did federalism impact the capacity for public health policy response to COVID-19? The case of Germany

    Over the course of the pandemic, Germany’s strong federal system required explicit coordination and cooperation between the federal and state governments. Before any substantial outbreak struck Germany in March, the German strategy to combat the disease was to contact trace and rely on state and local governments to stop the spread. As cases rose and the country moved into the first wave time period, COVID-19 restrictions primarily came from the national government as consented to by the states. For each new mandate released, the wording was unanimously agreed upon by all 16 federal state leaders and Chancellor Merkel. When cases started to recede and the country moved into the recovery phase, individual states became the main deciding actors for loosening and re-tightening the restrictions

    Beyond community characteristics: a leader\u27s gender and local government adoption of energy conservation practices and redistributive programs

    Most research examining factors associated with local government adoption of sustainability practices focuses on the impact of community characteristics. Little is known about whether adoption is also related to the characteristics of the leaders in these jurisdictions. To address this gap in the literature, this exploratory study uses data from a national survey of U.S. local governments (n = 1,672) to examine the potential correlation between adoption of certain sustainability practices and the gender of a jurisdiction’s highest elected official. Our regression models find that jurisdictions led by women were more likely to have adopted redistributive programmes and practices encouraging community-based energy conservation. But, there is no correlation between a local government’s adoption of measures promoting government energy conservation and its leader’s gender. Future research should explore whether female leaders’ greater openness to citizen involvement in the policymaking process and women’s socialisation to focus on communal rather than individual interests help account for our findings
