Guantanamo Bay Public Service Announcement
My research project is creating a public service announcement (PSA) for the people in North Carolina explaining the state’s role in the rendition, detention, and interrogation (RDI) program of the CIA. The ultimate goal of the PSA is to encourage the state of North Carolina and anyone who was involved in the stopovers to issue an official and public apology. I will work with the North Carolina Stop Torture Now organizationon to help them raise the public awareness needed to garner such an apology. At the height of the RDI program, North Carolina served as a midway point between overseas and Guantanamo Bay. Aero Contractors Limited is a private charter company that has been connected to the CIA for its role in supplying planes and pilots to take detainees to Guantanamo Bay. The video will be about two minutes in length, with the goal of humanizing the detainees. Too often people get complicated statistics and numbers thrown at them that veil the humanity of these people. I will use the artwork that detainees produced to show how similar they are to other people in hope of encouraging more sympathy toward them and action to improve their situation. I am compelled to show the staggeringly low conviction rate in Guantanamo Bay as a meaningful statistic that together with the art, can rally people to push harder for a public apology. While a public apology is a good step forward, there is nothing that can be done to completely make up for what the detainees endured in their many years at Guantanamo Bay.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2021/1002/thumbnail.jp
Dansaekhwa: Contemporary South Korean Art
The Dansaekhwa movement is an art phenomenon that emerged in South Korea in the 1960s in response to the political and social climate of that time. These artists were strongly concerned with entering the global art world while simultaneously maintaining their identities as distinctively Korean. From the perspective of the West, the prevailing view of South Korean artists — and of Asian artists as a whole — was that they could not be truly contemporary. They could find acceptance as producers of “traditional” Asian art, using familiar iconography of temples, cherry blossoms or Buddhas, or else have their works be regarded as mere imitations of Western forms, unless they were willing to entirely disavow their Asianness. The Dansaekhwa artists objected to these limited options and insisted on being recognized as both distinctively Asian, and genuinely contemporary. This project will focus on one artist associated with this group, Kwon Young-Woo. His 2017 solo exhibition, held in the Kukje Gallery in Seoul, serves to illustrate both the constraints under which contemporary South Korean artists who seek a global reputation have had to work, while also exploring the ways in which this artist has sought to open up the definition of what counts as a contemporary artist, by presenting work that is unashamedly both Korean and innovatively contemporary. Strobilomyces strobilaceus
Mycorrhizal with hardwoods, especially oaks; growing alone, scattered, or gregariously; summer and fall; widely distributed. Cap 5-10 cm, convex to broadly convex, whitish to light gray covered with erect fibrillose, black scales, margin hung with the remains of a partial veil. Pore surface buff and covered with a thin, whitish membrane when young, turning grayish to brown with age. Stem 4-10 cm long, buff, reticulate near apex, dark gray and shaggy when young with remains of partial veil. Flesh white throughout, turning reddish brown when sliced and/or bruised; no distinctive odor. DNA sequencing has detected 14 distinct lineages among Strobilomyces species. All 14 of the detected lineages share morphological characteristics making it difficult to definitively identify this species (Sato et al. 2007) In North America the name Strobilomyces strobilaceus has been used to replace what was previously called Strobilomyces floccopus (A European look-a-like). This name replacement has potential to be challenged because specimens included in North American collections were not a phylogenetic match to the European collections. (Kuo, 2013) It is likely there are new species of Strobilomyces on the North American continent, and identifications of this species should be seen as tentative until further studied using DNA sequencing. Manipulating the Landscape: A Mark, Not Just on the Land, but on the Minds of Men
Comparative studies of landscapes and architecture provide additional insights to research already available on mid- to late-eighteenth-century plantations and the mindsets of the colonial elite that oversaw their construction. Many examples exist of plantation owners modifying landscapes rather than using natural topography, suggesting the plantation layout is a mirror of the owner’s personal worldview or, on a deeper level, a projection of future aspirations. By mapping plantation landscapes and comparing spatial layouts, it may be possible to see patterns in how planters structured themselves socially within their own class and used their plantations as a means to rise within their social circles. This would be accomplished by analysing the plantations’ layouts in conjunction with background research on the owners. To begin this comparative analysis, a list of plantations constructed between 1740 and 1790 was compiled, which contained seventeen plantations. While only a small number of plantations in Maryland and Virginia have been thoroughly mapped, comparison between plantation layouts has yielded positive results. Building a “plantation grammar”, or set of elements and structures common to the plantations, gave insight into the mindset of Governor Horatio Sharpe of Maryland. This insight brought a feature of his plantation historically accepted by scholars into question. When considering all aspects of Sharpe’s plantation, it is highly probable that the feature in question did not exist. Sharpe’s plantation will be discussed below, along with a discussion of various elements of plantation “grammar” observed through comparative studies

Saprobic; our sample was found on a fallen branch of a hardwood, which is common, especially on oak. Found globally. In North America, it is most commonly found in the Midwest, but also observed in the Northeast. Fruiting body length 1 in, amber in color. No distinguishable stem, but the fruiting body is attached to the surface by a central point shorter than the length of the full body. Gelatinous and jelly-like, but holds its shape unless squeezed firmly. Wave-like structure with depressions that cave into the center. The species is found worldwide and one study found it to be abundant in the unburned forests of Northwestern Alaska (Alshammari 2019). Butryiboletus brunneus
Mycorrhizal with hardwoods and found where conifers are present; widely found in eastern North America as well as the Midwest; growing in summer and fall; most often scattered or solitary and sometimes gregarious. Smooth to velvety, convex, brown cap; cap flesh stains blue; pore surface bright yellow and sponge-like with very small pores, stains blue when first affected then turns brown; finely reticulate stipe that is light yellow, becoming scarlet red towards the base; when exposed to KOH cap turns bright red and inner flesh turns reddish-brown; taste not distinctive, slightly sour. Butyriboletus is a new genus within the family Boletaceae established in 2014 (Arora, 2014); the species was formerly known as Boletus speciosus var. brunneus. Morphologically similar to Butyriboletus peckii which is characterized by smaller reticulation on the stipe as well as a yellow coloration that turns red higher up the stipe.
