Elite Women as Tools of Power in First-Century C.E. Rome

    Get PDF
For the patrician class, marriage was a form of power intended to uphold Roman patriarchy by providing opportunity for social, political, and economic advancement. However, history has shown that the power of marriage also extended to the women involved in these couplings as well. Through marriage, elite Roman women had the power to perpetuate or decimate Rome’s social order. Thus, gender norms were created and enforced in order to maintain patriarchy. Women who did not live up to the social expectations set by these norms were met with opposition. By examining Roman poetry and literature, Roman politics, and profiling the lives and reputations of real imperial women, we discover that the treatment of women in Rome was a direct reflection of Rome\u27s patriarchal values

Sweden and Norway in the management of a public health response to the COVID-19 pandemic: a failed experiment in public good provision without state coercion

    Get PDF
The COVID-19 pandemic has served as a major challenge for political incumbents to design and implement a public policy response to track and contain the virus. This essay compares the public health strategies of Norway and Sweden to examine the failure of the non-coercive strategy of the Swedish government in the initial months of the pandemic, which led to higher case fatality and death rates per 100,000 in a population. The findings of this study represent the tragedy of the commons in health when institutions allow for individually rational behavior amidst the effort to contain and control infection

Thin metal rods, 3D printed sculpture, image 1

Below are pictures of a 3D printed sculpture of a design I created many years ago based on the Star of David, originally made by soldering thin metal rods together. Four such stars are placed on the faces of a tetrahedron, so that each star touches an adjacent star at three points. Three of these pictures show a 3D printed version made from strong flexible plastic where each line segment of each star is 3 long. I received these models from Shapeways.com.https://orb.binghamton.edu/mathematical_sculptures/1587/thumbnail.jp

The Use of Tobacco Pipes in Identifying and Separating Contexts on Smuttynose Island, Maine

    Get PDF
Five years of excavation on Smuttynose Island, Isles of Shoals, Maine has recovered a large number of artifacts. These artifacts are related to nearly four hundred years of European use and occupation of the island, and include over 7,000 fragments of white clay tobacco pipes. Unfortunately, the specific soil conditions of the site often made field identification of different contexts difficult during the excavation process. This paper explores the use of clay pipes in the separation and identification of different stratigraphic contexts. Questions addressed include the utility of various stem-bore dating methods, and the use of identifying the origin of pipes and how this can be used to link specific stratigraphic contexts to known historical occupations of the island. This particularly includes the early migratory period of the Gulf of Maine cod fishery. Finally, this paper provides a chronological framework for further study and interpretation of the archaeology of Smuttynose Island

Dating the Morris House: A Study of Heritage Value in Nova Scotia

    Get PDF
In 2009, a group of concerned citizens in Halifax rallied to the banner of The Heritage Trust of Nova Scotia and the Ecology Action Centre to save an 18th century building from demolition. Their case for preserving the building hinged on its unique heritage value, it having formerly housed the office of Charles Morris,Nova Scotia’s first Chief Surveyor. Thanks to their efforts, the Morris House was temporarily relocated to a nearby vacant lot while a new apartment building gradually rose in its place. Although researchers had believed the Morris House pre-dated 1781, the year of Charles Morris’s death, its precise age was unknown at the time of the move. Through a combination of dendroarchaeological, cartographic, and documentary evidence, our research significantly alters previous understandings of the building’s history and complicates the narrative advanced by heritage advocates in its defense. In doing so, it also raises questions about the interface between empirical research and the socio-political factors influencing the determination of heritage value.

    No full text
In the year 2008, the University of Ibagué launched several initiatives to articulate higher education with local development. The Programa Paz y Región (Peace and Region Program) is one of those initiatives and it is the focus of this article, whose purpose is to analyse this program in the light of two related concepts: university extension programmes and social responsibility (SR). Our analysis is based on a managerial perspective and our hypothesis is that “Paz y Región” responds to regional development in Tolima, Colombia, from a co-constructed perspective of extension programmes

    Hypomyces lactifluorum

    Get PDF
Parasitic on Russula and Lactarius species (Harrison & Grund 1977), particularly members of the R. brevipes species complex (Laperriere et al. 2018). Found in mixed hardwood forest. Reddish orange subiculum forms a powdery coating on its host mushroom, deforming the shape of the pileus and covering the gills completely. Some specimens within the same patch displayed a white subiculum. Rogerson & Samuels (1994) delineate the white form as Hypomyces macrosporus based on a negative KOH reaction on the white parts compared to a purple KOH reaction on the red form, while Harrison & Grund (1977) label both forms as H. lactifluorum based on microscopic characters. Further research is needed to determine if these different phenotypes constitute separate species. ID number: 20.23.04.2021https://orb.binghamton.edu/macrofungi_eastbrookvalley/1047/thumbnail.jp

    Pleurocybella porrigens

    Get PDF
Saprobic; grows scattered or gregariously on decaying conifer logs, especially Eastern Hemlock; often accompanied by large patches of moss; grows most often in September and October though our specimen were found in July; nationwide and worldwide distribution. 2.5-10cm; shelf-like, fan-shaped body, broadly concave or broadly convex; white to pale cream cap; smooth; pliable, thin, fleshy and relatively fragile; white gills; crowded; cap smooth; occasional pseudo stipe present. Though a popular edible in Japan, P. porrigens caused fatal acute encephalopathy in 17 humans in the country in 2004 due to the presence of the toxic amino acid pleurocybellaziridine in the mushrooms (Wakimoto et al. 2011). It was found that of the 55 people affected in the outbreak, most were suffering from renal failure, likely causing an inability of their kidneys to filter out the amino acid (Kawaguchi et al. 2010).
