Maple Ambrosia Trefoil Knot, Figure 1

    No full text
The original wood block was 2.5 x8 x8 , and the final piece is about 7.5 in diameter and 2 thick. The trefoil knot is formed by the raised edge which goes through the three holes, so this trafoil knot is embedded in a genus 3 surface. The curve, if seen from above follows the pattern usually used to draw a trefoil knot on paper, with alternating over and under crossings. It therefore shows the 3-fold symmetry of the trefoil better than if it had been carved as a (3,2) torus knot.https://orb.binghamton.edu/mathematical_sculptures/1636/thumbnail.jp

Trefoil knot, Figured Maple 2, Figure 2

    No full text
I completed carving two more versions of the Trefoil Knot, these made from a piece of Figured Maple which was originally 3.25 x8 x8 . I split it into two pieces each of size 1.5 x8 x8 , and the final results were about 7.5 in diameter and 1.5 thick.https://orb.binghamton.edu/mathematical_sculptures/1643/thumbnail.jp

U.S. Covert Actions in the Indonesian Genocide: the International Criminal Court

    Get PDF
After the Korean War in 1950, the Cold War expanded to Asia transitioning from purely economic aid in Europe from the Marshall Plan, to direct military intervention then to covert military operations under the Eisenhower Administration in Indonesia. The focus of this research is on the United States military intervention through covert military operations from 1950-66 and details the evolution of foreign policy in Indonesia from the economic aid to supplying names of PKI insurgents to be slaughtered. With the general research questions of How did CIA interference through covert military operations in Indonesia highlight a shift in CIA intervention from economic aid from the Marshall Plan to infiltrating regimes and massacring civilians such as Chile during the Cold War? Why is it that the major powers are rarely prosecuted for crimes against humanity, war crimes and genocide under the International criminal court and rarely face any consquences? From, 1953-1958 the United States intervention in Indonesia took on a new form, of infiltrating the PKI party through the CIA and then began to form “civic action” missions through training opposition troops in 1957, the US trained Suharto assist in turning the Indonesian army to a counter insurgency unit independent off Sukarno led state, through establishing SESKOAD civic action training centers run by the CIA that became the training grounds utilized for the political takeover of General Suharto. In 1962 the United States began covert military operations to Indonesia and drastically increased its MAP to the region, and four months before the coup two large trade deals these weapons and communication systems were used in the communist purge amounting to war crimes, crimes against humanity and assitance in genocide and these trade deals would also benefit Suharto’s business partners until 1966. Due to the anarchy of the international world system, and the lack of enforcement from the ICC the United States will not be held accountable for crimes against humanity and genocide

Judaism and Capitalism: Ideologies in Conflict

    Get PDF
Under the American capitalist system, modern Jewish communities gradually and subconsciously compromise on their core values in order to flourish in said system. Jewish tradition has long espoused socialist economic practices and constructed institutions based on socialist values of social sensitivity, responsibility, and equity. My method is first to outline several ancient institutions in the Torah that exhibit these socialist values. Then, through comparing these structures to the practices of Modern Orthodox Jewish communities today, I will demonstrate that although these institutions and practices have largely been phased out, the values that underpin them remain. Furthermore, these socialist values necessarily clash with the capitalist ideology in which they are situated. This ideological conflict is reconciled by the sublimation and modification of Judaism’s socialist inclinations to fit the dominant capitalist model, which forces those values into obsolescence and instead prioritizes the pursuit of monetary gains. There are still some forms of Judaism today, though they exist on the fringe of Jewish society and society at large, that challenge capitalist ideology. The communist Kibbutzim and ascetic chassidim are two very different communities that each exist on their own and attempt to live outside of capitalistic pressures. Judaism is a religion that prizes moral character and “loving thy neighbor as thyself” above all else. As a Jew or non-Jew, it is important to recognize how our capitalist reality distorts our values and ever so slowly distances our communities from each other and from the ideals that built them.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2022/1020/thumbnail.jp

Some Day My Prince Will Come: Archival Analysis of The Disney Prince, Relationship Portrayal and “Happily Ever After”

    Get PDF
Disney is one of the largest distributors of media to children, portraying romance, love, and the happily-ever-after endings in its popular collection of animated films (DiPirro 2007). The purpose of this study is to examine the Disney princes and the phenomenon of chasing after a prince for that “happily ever after” ending. Studies have previously explored aspects of the princess and her story, therefore this research investigates another angle of this franchise. The hypothesis of the current study is that Disney Princess movies will end in “Happily Ever After” with Princes with no character or character development in the earlier films, and minimal change over time. The current research method includes a combination of observational and quantitative analysis of eleven of the Disney franchise Princess movies from Snow White in 1937 to Frozen in 2011. Descriptive statistics, as well as t-test and trend data, will be collected and analyzed. Moreover, while watching the movies, relevant quotes will be recorded that depict the character’s personality and portrayal as well as some more general observations about how the film is depicting the prince and the relationships that will included in the study. The results indicate that the hypothesis was somewhat supported as most of the Disney Princess movies end in “Happily Ever After.” However, while the prince character becomes more complex as time goes on, he is still traditionally masculine and is a part of an outdated, gendered love story.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2022/1030/thumbnail.jp

The Implications of Adderall on College Students

    Get PDF
The abuse of adderall among college students is a prevalent issue in today’s society due to the stress they face with deadlines, assignments, and external pressure. Adderall is a stimulant that changes brain chemistry and reduces appetite. A study was conducted to examine the extent to which adderall has an effect on student’s nutrition and mood. An anonymous online survey was administered through GroupMe, text, email, and word of mouth. The survey included basic demographic questions and questions on mental health, diet, and the illicit use of stimulant drugs such as Adderall. For analysis, demographics from the survey were compiled together and coded using Google Sheets. Implications of Adderall abuse on mental health and nutrition in college students compared to non-users were then compared. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 25.0. Based on the 157 responses received from the survey, there is a positive correlation between Adderall intake and malnutrition (poor quality food choices) including high stress level, mental health issues (e.g. sleep difficulty, anxiety, weight loss, and depression), and caffeine intake. Those who abuse Adderall are more likely to follow a Western dietary pattern. These results suggest that the illicit use of Adderall not only impacts mood but quality of food consumed.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2022/1048/thumbnail.jp
