Employing Boundary Element Approach With Genetic Algorithm to Increase Travel Range of Repulsive Actuators

    Get PDF
The design of repulsive electrostatic actuators having enlarged travel range is achieved by combining the boundary element approach and a genetic algorithm. The boundary element method enables calculating the electrostatic forces without time consuming finite element simulations. Once a static equation that uses a model of effective lumped mass solves the travel ranges, the GA maximizes travel ranges by optimizing the dimensional parameters. The effectiveness of the scheme is demonstrated with extensive experimental results showing the travel ranges of a micro out-of-plane actuator are increased by up to 190%. The developed platform can improve the signal-to-noise ratios and the performance of general multi-electrode systems

Hello! My name is Andonia Gountanis, I am a junior and a neuroscience major at Binghamton University. My studies mostly consist of heavy-loaded-science courses. I enjoy writing in my free time! This gives me a little diversity in what I do, and gives me a break from all the heavy science material I learn in a day

Tracking the Spread of Invasive Species in the Binghamton University Natural Preserve

    No full text
Our research focus on the two most common invasive plants--Autumn Olive and Common Reed distribution pattern analytics and campus community education level of the invasive species. We used Survey123 to collect campus community members\u27 opinion and their educational background on invasive species. We also used ArcGIS FieldMap to collect the species distribution data. Finally, we integrate them and get a conclusion. Our findings point out that the invasive species spreading corresponds with the most frequent trials. More education programs should be implemented in order to protect our environment. Some solution inludes volunteer cleaning up program, report invasive species, etc. Further research can be focused on using advanced technologies to track invasive species, interactive dashboard implement, etc
