Death and Rebirth of Public Archaeology at Strawbery Banke, 1970–1985
For nearly a half-century, Strawbery Banke’s archaeology program has contributed to and benefited from major trends in American urban archaeology. During the 1960s this outdoor museum in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, was a focal point for radically different approaches to the study of urban landfill by Roland Robbins and Daniel Ingersoll, at a time when landfill was largely neglected. Strawbery Banke also explored the variable practices of contracted and academic archaeology and realized early on that neither approach produced an enduring legacy of public engagement. In 1975 the museum experimented with retaining a resident archaeologist and soon committed to construction of the Jones House Archaeology Center and the hosting of an ongoing public archaeology program. This article reviews the genesis and evolution of this program during the period 1970–1985
Accessibility or Environmental Conservation? Evaluating the relationship between Environmental Protection and Hiking Trails Accessibility via LiDAR & Remote Sensing
Binghamton University Nature Preserve spans 190 acres of land, with a notable 20-acre wetland serving a multifaceted purpose. It is dedicated to preserving the ecological integrity of this landscape, fostering biodiversity, and facilitating research and environmental education. Furthermore, it serves as a recreational space for students, enhancing the bonds between the campus and the neighboring community. This research focuses on Binghamton University\u27s nature preserve as a case study to explore the intricate balance between two vital objectives: ensuring equal access for all user demographics while safeguarding its ecosystem services. To achieve these objectives, the study employs diverse public engagement methods, encompassing surveys and community mapping, to gather valuable insights from various stakeholders. Additionally, the research integrates cutting-edge technology, such as drone flights (UAV) and remote-controlled vehicles equipped with iPhone LiDAR sensors, to acquire comprehensive data on trail conditions and the surrounding environment. The innovative fusion of community input and high-tech data collection empowers a data-driven approach to environmental management, offering the potential to advance accessibility and sustainability simultaneously. By bridging the gap between these two fundamental considerations, this study not only enhances the Binghamton University nature preserve but also paves the way for formulating novel, inclusive, and environmentally responsible public policies and potentially transforming the management of natural preserves nationwide
Duchenne muscular dystrophy from brain to muscle: The role of brain dystrophin isoforms in motor functions
Brain function and its effect on motor performance in Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is an emerging concept. The present study explored how cumulative dystrophin isoform loss, age, and a corticosteroid treatment affect DMD motor outcomes. A total of 133 genetically confirmed DMD patients from Sri Lanka were divided into two groups based on whether their shorter dystrophin isoforms (Dp140, Dp116, and Dp71) were affected: Group 1, containing patients with Dp140, Dp116, and Dp71 affected (n = 98), and Group 2, containing unaffected patients (n = 35). A subset of 52 patients (Group 1, n = 38; Group 2, n = 14) was followed for up to three follow-ups performed in an average of 28-month intervals. The effect of the cumulative loss of shorter dystrophin isoforms on the natural history of DMD was analyzed. A total of 74/133 (56%) patients encountered developmental delays, with 66/74 (89%) being in Group 1 and 8/74 (11%) being in Group 2 (p \u3c 0.001). Motor developmental delays were predominant. The hip and knee muscular strength, according to the Medical Research Council (MRC) scale and the North Star Ambulatory Assessment (NSAA) activities, “standing on one leg R”, “standing on one leg L”, and “walk”, declined rapidly in Group 1 (p \u3c 0.001 In the follow-up analysis, Group 1 patients became wheelchair-bound at a younger age than those of Group 2 (p = 0.004). DMD motor dysfunction is linked to DMD mutations that affect shorter dystrophin isoforms. Surface enhanced raman scattering-based multiplexing detection of proteins in solutions
The Influenza virus infected over 36 million people in 2019, whereas the COVID-19virus caused a deadly pandemic that has infected over 700 million people to date. Both viruses share a magnitude of similar symptoms, which presents a key challenge for the need of a highly sensitive and selective biosensors that can simultaneously detect the specific biomarkers for each of these viruses. This work focuses on developing a Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) based biosensor for detecting protein biomarkers related to the two viruses such as H1N1 and S- protein. Gold nanoparticles are used for SERS signal amplification. The objective of this work is to determine the use of gold nanoparticles to enhance the sensitivity and selectivity of the biosensor in a multiplexed detection of the two different proteins in solutions. The nanoparticles are conjugated with different Raman reporters and capture/detection antibodies for SERS detection. The results demonstrated that the SERS intensity increases with the protein biomarker concentrations. The results also demonstrated the viability of using SERS for the multiplexed detection of the mixed proteins in the solution. The findings will be discussed, along with future experiments to analyze more than two protein biomarkers at one time, ultimately improving the multiplexing capability
