Extending the Spectral Difference Method with Divergence Cleaning (SDDC) to the Hall MHD Equations
The Hall Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations are an extension of the standard MHD equations that include the “Hall” term from the general Ohm’s law. The Hall term decouples ion and electron motion physically on the ion inertial length scales. Implementing the Hall MHD equations in a numerical solver allows more physical simulations for plasma dynamics on length scales less than the ion inertial scale length but greater than the electron inertial length. The present effort is an important step towards producing physically correct results to important problems, such as the Geospace Environmental Modeling (GEM) Magnetic Reconnection problem. The solver that is being modified is currently capable of solving the resistive MHD equations on unstructured grids using the spectral difference scheme which is an arbitrarily high-order method that is relatively simple to parallelize. The GEM Magnetic Reconnection problem is used to evaluate whether the Hall MHD equations have been correctly implemented in the solver using the spectral difference method with divergence cleaning (SDDC) algorithm by comparing against the reconnection rates reported in the literature
Digital scholarship at Binghamton
The following slides are part of a presentation at the 2023 CIT conference (SUNY\u27s Conference on Instruction and Technology), where we talk about how digital scholarship has evolved at Binghamton and our work to bring SUNY Create (an organizational instance of Domain of One\u27s Own by Reclaim Hosting) to campus for use as professional sites, digital projects, and class projects
Teaching for now and planning for later: balancing a user-friendly web and sustainability practices as digital scholarship librarians
The following video and slides are from a presentation we gave at Reclaim Open 2023. The presentation talks about how SUNY Create is used at Binghamton, including our workflows for digital project management, defining roles and responsibilities, and our web accessibility checklist

A Bug’s-Eye View: Examining the Impact of The Bug Squad Exhibit at a Local Children’s Museum.
Hands-on playing is vital in the development of children, as it promotes their ability to progress socially, emotionally, and cognitively (Ginsburg, 2007). While children’s museums are designed to support such progress, it is important to consider how specific interactive exhibits may play a role in supporting children’s engagement and development. The purpose of this mixed-methods research study was to analyze how children, ages 2-12, at a local children’s museum engaged with the new exhibit, The Bug Squad, and how it influenced parents’ decisions to return. Data was collected through observation of children’s engagement in an interactive exhibit and a short survey to understand parents’ points of view. Initial results from observations indicated that certain elements of the exhibit such as the “Chrysalis Spinner” or “Pollinator Power” were more popular amongst the children than others, and we hypothesized this would remain consistent throughout the remainder of the observations. These potential findings can contribute to the sustainability and retention rate of other interactive exhibits to support the social, emotional, and cognitive development of children.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2023/1025/thumbnail.jp
Happy Medium High School Magazine Development Program
Undergraduate students working with Happy Medium, a subsidiary organization of the Student Association at Binghamton University, worked with faculty member Heather Dorn to develop and facilitate the pilot of a program through which undergraduates worked with high school students to create a politics magazine at their school. Chenango Valley High School, which was chosen to pilot this program, is also a pilot school for New York State’s Seal of Civic Readiness program; the administrators welcomed Happy Medium’s program as an extension of this state program. A group of students from grades 8-11 attended weekly after-school meetings for five weeks, including four workshops facilitated by undergraduates: introduction to political journalism, research practices, productive political discourse, and the editing process. Three high school students were selected to serve as copy editors. The development and pilot of this program were funded through a grant from the Binghamton University Center for Civic Engagement.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2023/1027/thumbnail.jp
Correlation Between Fruits and Vegetables and Mood
The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between fruit and vegetables consumption and mental well-being. Soluble fiber positively affects the gut microbiota, which has an impact on mood. However little is known about the impact of eating fruits and vegetables on mood. An anonymous online survey was administered through a variety of social media platforms. The survey included basic demographic questions and questions on dietary practices. Pearson Correlation Coefficient was used to analyze data in SPSS version 25.0. Findings suggest an increase in fruits and vegetables corresponds with an increase in better mood. Our results suggest there is an association between a healthier diet and increased mood. This strong connection can be attributed to the positive effect on the gut microbiota from ingesting soluble fiber.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2023/1044/thumbnail.jp
January 6th, 2021: The Day The World Watched A Shameless Demonstration of White Supremacy
On January 6th, 2021, the United States democracy was assaulted as rioters stormed the Capitol to prevent the genuine power transfer from Donald Trump to President Joseph Biden. They weaponized “patriotism,” holding a sense of entitlement to their “Real American” views paralleled in white supremacist history (Anderson). These insurrectionists opened an important conversation about how far-right extremism is built from exclusionary politics; specifically, the historical continuity of white supremacy and how white entitlement is fostered by the United States’ institutions (Anderson, Diem & Hawkman). Since this ideology combines with racism, I find it necessary to further investigate far-right extremism in a human rights context. I argue that January 6th was a demonstration of white supremacy through the analytical review of rioters’ rhetoric as well as their affiliations. In this report, I attempt to hold privilege accountable, and shed light on the immense threat January 6th posed to social, civil progression.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2023/1068/thumbnail.jp
Art & Capitalism
This research paper explores the impact which the economic conditions of capitalism have had and continue to have on art. Through analysis of various case studies and other examples of the predatory nature of capitalism being expressed in the art world, the paper highlights the issues brought about by the commodification of art, such as the diminishing quality and authenticity of works of art. The paper also investigates the role of the art market, and how it derives the value of art from the status of the artist rather than artistic merit of the work. Research into the economic conditions of artists is also presented, highlighting the necessity of status in living as an artist. This research is presented with the hope that there can be a reevaluation of the relationship between capitalism and art while advocating for alternative approaches that prioritize the intrinsic value of art rather than its monetary value.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2023/1071/thumbnail.jp
