Prison Reformation, Observation and Rehabilitation of Convicts in Oke-Kura Prison, Ilorin
No full textThis paper focuses on the role of the prison in the rehabilitation and reformation of offenders. In recent times, emphasis has been placed on the need to advance the rights of prisoners in Nigeria through influencing policy actions and frameworks to reverse the state of inefficiency in which the Nigerian prisons have found themselves. Triangulation was used to generate data for this study, which includes; unbiased observation, documentary evidence and a structured questionnaire. The study revealed a tripod imbalance in the prisons system which is the mitigating factor to achieving the objective of rehabilitation and reformation; the personnel, policies and prison facilities are at the core of this deficiency. Recommendations for both short term and long term prison overhaul were proffered. It was concluded that, required policies and actions be implemented for the prison system to efficiently carry on its task of reformation and rehabilitation and adequate line of action be followed to control criminality at its socio-economic base
A Comparative Study of Genesis Creation Story and Yoruba Myth of Creation
Get PDFThe field of comparative studies in the attempt to appreciate the beauty of God\u27s creation has persisted in theological research for common denominator in the myths that surround creation story. For several centuries, many people, especially critical scholars have called attention to the obvious discrepancies between the creation accounts found in different theories. True enough- but the narratives are fundamentally very different and still talking about the sarne event. The aim of this paper is to articulate the relevance of Yoruba myth in comparison to Genesis Creation Story. To this extent, the comparative and theological research methods are employed while relying on secondary sources factual analysis. The research findings revealed that creation theories were theories indicating that the Supreme Being is the originator of all creations. God was the first worker Who created, designed, fashioned, engineered, molded, and constructed the entire universe, therefore He is the base of all theories about the creation of the heaven and the earth propounded by different scholars in the past, present and future world
Traditional Histories and Historical Reconstruction of the Origin and Early History of Ilorin: A Reexamination
Get PDFSince the 1950s when African and Africanist historians began to use oral evidence as a veritable source for historical reconstruction of Africa’s pre-colonial past, traditional histories have continued to occupy a central stage in modern African historiography. In spite of its limitations, no serious historical inquiry into the past of Africa’s non-literate societies would ignore traditional material. The use of traditional accounts of the origin and early history of Ilorin has continued to pose serious challenges to historians and non-historians. Some reasons may be responsible for this including Ilorin’s multiethnic and multicultural configuration; inexhaustive analysis and interpretation of various versions of Ilorin’s traditional history in existing attempts at reconstructing its origin and early history, and the fact that much of Ilorin’s history up to the 1820s has not been reconsidered in the light of historical and archaeological evidence from various parts of the Old Oyo Empire and the entire region within which context the origin and early history of Ilorin is located. This paper adopts a multidisciplinary approach to reexamine the traditional accounts on the “origin” and “early” history of Ilorin and posits that various elements in the traditions suggest different phases in the historical evolution of Ilorin and of the developments before the late 18th century
Nigeria Inter-Religious Council in Lagos State: Its Formation, Impact and Challenges
No full textAbout two decades of the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC) has been more than plausible in solving the problems emanating from various religious groups and personalities. This, to a large extent, puts the Council in a proper stead to stem the tide even before issues are unfolded. The Council prices well in the hand of relative Government particularly at the time when bigotry, extremism and terrorism in the name of religion bite harder. As a formation that follows the trend of events at all times and in all places the council has achieved tremendously. Lagos State Government always collaborates with the Council to ensure relative peace is enjoyed despite the volatile nature of the citizenry in the State. The aim of this paper is not only to present NIREC in Lagos State in particular and Nigeria in general has a formidable religious initiative of the government, but also to evaluate their activities as commendable noteworthy in controlling and reducing religious crises to the barest minimum in Lagos State. It was discovered, however, that this would not have been possible without constant interaction with Religious Leaders in the State. Through the Council, various policies of the Government get across the polity since majority of the residents are Christians and Muslims. It is the opinion of this paper that relative peace enjoyed in Lagos State should not be taken for granted. It is on this basis that some suggestions were offered on possible ways of strengthening the Council for better achievements. The paper, however, solely adopted a library based approach in gathering all necessary information for its actualization
A Lexico-Grammatical Analysis of a Funeral Oration: Michael Imoudu – The Struggle was Your Life
Get PDFFuneral rites are among the oldest known rituals to man. One of such rites is the presentation of funeral oration. More than any other activity associated with burials, funeral orations highlight the personal characteristics of the deceased and serve as a means of reinforcing social bonds and status. The funeral oration selected for this study was presented by the president of the Nigerian Labour Congress, Comrade Adams Aliyu Oshiomole at the burial of the Union’s first president, Michael Aithokhamen Omiunu Imoudu. The speaker’s main objective is to recount the prominent roles the deceased played as the founding leader of the labour movement by means of which he championed the cause of the oppressed and positively impacted on the national life. This work attempts a lexico-grammatical analysis of the selected funeral oration. It explores how the grammar constructs reflect the general atmosphere pervading the context. It also analyses the clauses in the oration, using the semantic theory of Leech and the systemic functional theory of Halliday and Matthiessen. From the analysis, the trend of the speech reflects a predominant use of declarative and few imperative clauses. The role language plays in the oration is “constitutive” and the type of interaction is “monologic”. The medium of interaction is “spoken” with “phonic” channel and the speech is “persuasive”
Revisiting Indigenous Methods of Arbitration for Peace Building in the Contemporary Yoruba Society
No full textThis study focused on the indigenous method of arbitration and peace building in order to show how effective it was in the maintenance of law and order as well as social equilibrium in the pre-colonial Yoruba societies compared to our modern day society. In traditional Yoruba societies, peace was not an abstract poetic concept, but rather a down to earlh and practical concept. In Yoruba indigenous religious institution, peace is conceived, not in relation to conflict and war, but in relation to orderliness. It is a religious value in that, the peace in the universe and society is believed to be divinely established and the obligation to maintain it is religious. It is also a moral value since good conduct is required of human beings if peace and order are to be maintained. The study was descriptive and qualitative relying on secondary data sources. It found that the Traditional models provided for a win-win arrangement relying on collective wisdom of the society while the involvement of native gods compelled compliance with resolution terms for fear of non-compliance. The study concluded that the relevance of the ancestors, community leaders and the gods are largely limited to intra-ethnic conflicts while it has been perverted by political elites but do not imply that they are no longer relevant. The study recommended that government must pay attention to early warning signals to minimize direct violence and develop strong political will to confront the issues of conflict. Finally, the indigenous methods of arbitration and peace building models concerning the intervention of the ancestors, community leaders and the gods could be combined with Western models where practicable as they cannot stand alone
Pneumatology in African Perspective and Its Implications for the 21st Century Christians
Get PDFAfrican Traditional Religion assets that the world is permeated with divinities and spirits who can have positive effects on every aspects of life. It is believed that the bad spirits inflict injury and cause accidents and sufferings. Spirits are also said to posses and influence human beings for their own purposes. These beliefs still exert a powerful influence on the 21st Century Christians. In fact, strong beliefs in the spirit world and morbid fear have led many African Christians and Churches into unbiblical doctrine and practices. The descriptive and analytical methods were used. The paper discovers that although the spiritual world plays such an important role in African life, the spirit in general belongs to the ontological mode of existence between God and man. To sum it all, spirits are not bad as people think; they have many roles to play. They are invisible and can be either malevolent or benevolent depending on how people experience the forces of nature and how they act towards human beings. Biblical and African views on the problems of evil are so close. Although certain aspects of the African views are surpassed and need to be modified or perfected by the biblical message, other aspects could be retained as very useful means of planting Christianity firmly in the African soil
The Affirmative Action and Women Participation in Politics in Nigeria: An Assessment Study on the Legal Constraint
Get PDFThe participation of women in politics and decision making is one of the major issues that have dominated the world; this is because women constitute about fifty percentage of the world population. The importance of women participation in politics cannot be over-emphasised, considering the fact that women are mothers, social, cultural and political activists. In Nigeria, the affirmative action contained in the National Gender Policy is a strategic tool for enhancing women participation in politics. The policy has brought about tremendous increase in women participation in politics in Nigeria, as more women are willing to participate in both appointive and elective politics. However, the affirmative action is a mere action plan of the executive and falls under Chapter II (Fundamental Objectives and Directive Principles of State Policy) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) which makes it non-justiciable. So, where the government fails to abide by the affirmative action, the government cannot be compelled and such cannot be challenged in the law court (as currently being experienced in Nigeria). This paper seeks to discuss the relevance of the affirmative action to the participation of women in politics in Nigeria. The legal constraint to the enforcement of the policy is particularly identified and discussed, while imperative legal measures towards giving legal prominence to the policy are recommended
Education and Religion: The Role of Christianity in Ilorin, Nigeria
Get PDFChristianity is one of the world’s major religions introduced to Nigeria in the 15th and 19th centuries respectively. The city of Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State, is one of the towns that benefitted from this endeavour much later after its inception in Nigeria. Though, Islam had been well established in the town before the advent of Christianity, since its introduction into the community, Christianity has made tremendous impact on every area of her developments. However, our focus in this paper centres on the immense contributions Christianity has made in the aspects of educational advancement. Other areas of development like religion and politics have been dealt with in other publications of the author. The present study examines the location of Ilorin, introduction of Christianity to the town, and the developments it has brought. Findings revealed that the introduction of Christianity has complemented the socio and economic outlook of the town. It is recommended among others that Christians should develop spirit of tolerance, respect and appreciation for the doctrines and belief system of other religions. This cooperative attitude will assist individual adherents to jointly develop the town socially, economically and educationally
