Justice in Deuteronomy 16:218-20: A Sine Qua Non for Yahweh\u27s Covenant Fulfillment
The derek wamidhar (exodus and desert) experience of the Israelites was monitored by YHWH and guarded by the sinatic torah waberith (law and covenant). YHYH made laws for his people so that they might know how to relate well with him and wiith one another in a humane and fair manner. Laws are usually enacted to point out sin, make people avoid sinful habits and practices and mere out punishments for culprits so as to maintain orderliness and protect people\u27s rights in the society. Thus- YHWH wanted justice, the fair treatment of people and sagacious ruling in all matters, even those which the written laws may not cover verbatim. This paper therefore seeks to examine the concept of justice in Deuteronomy 16: l8-20 as a prerequisite to enjoying the benefits YHWH had provided for the Israelites in the land of Canaan. Hermeneutical research approach was adopted, to clearly delineat the concepts of justice in the context of Deut 16:18-20. It was discovered that despite the fact that Judges were appointed inequality, oppression, bribery and corruption still persisted among the Israelites, which YHWH pointed out were factors responsible for their untimely death and poverty. The paper concluded by recommending that credibility should not be compromised in appointing Judges; the judiciary should be sanitized and corrupt members should be heavily sanctioned
Translating the Qur’an from Arabic into English: A Semantic Examination of Some Lexical Equivalents
The Holy Qur’an was originally revealed and compiled in the Arabic language. It employs many linguistic, stylistic and rhetorical features to convey its intended meanings. The use of those features poses serious challenges to the translators of the Holy Qur’an, who are to naturally be agents of conveying the understanding of its messages. Here, this paper makes a semantic examination of English translations of some lexical items in the Holy Qur’an using, intermittently, Marmaduke Pickthall’s (1930) and Yusuf Ali’s (1975) translation versions of the Qur’an as references. This study traces the selected lexemes to their etymological origins in order to reveal their original meanings and juxtapose them with the sample translations, so as to understand the possible loss during translations. The paper finds out that there are semantic losses in the selected lexemes during translation and thus suggests, among others, that translators must be mindful of the etymology of the Arabic lexical items and cultural context of the target audience before their equivalents are chosen
An Examination of the Impact of Religion in Nation Building
For decades, the desire to build a just, orderly, peaceful and progressive society has been uppermost in the minds of Nigerian leaders. But due to external influences on them, their mission and vision continue to remain a mirage. These influences coupled with high level of corruption, poverty and selfishness, lack of contentment increased their problems. This made the Nigerian leaders derail from their avowed vision and mission with the result that at the end of a leader\u27s tenure little or no progress would have been made\u27 Corruption, poverty, selfishness and other social vices would be on the increase\u27 Hence, the goal of nation building is not achieved. This is causing grave concern to well-meaning members of the society. Religion\u27s stern qualities of sincerity, honesty, selfless service to humanity, contentment among other qualities appear to be a better alternative for building a progressive and a sustainable society. The paper adopted analytical and descriptive methods in order to achieve the purpose of the paper. The findings of the study validate the fact that a progressive society anchored on the afore-mentioned qualities which are essential for building a progressive Nigerian Society. These qualities are the core teachings of every religion. The study further discovered some vital innate qualities in religion that make for sincerity of purpose, contentment and selfless services irrespective of Internal and external factors. This paper asserts that it is wise and realistic for the multi religious society of Nigeria to look into the common values inherent in the various religions toward a viable and peaceful coexistence capable of enhancing holistic development of the nation
Historical Development of Mosques in Ilorin Emirate, 1823–1992
The word, mosque or Masjid, occupies a significant place in the spiritual minds of the generality of Muslims. It has been stated that prayers are uniquely and strongly recommended to be offered in a Mosque as part of Ibadah for the Muslims. Mosques are places where Muslims congregate to know each other better and to form a solid community through religious interaction. In addition, praying at mosques in congregation promotes and teaches unity among the people as well as serves as meeting places where various problems are identified with a view to finding solutions to them. It is against this background that this paper chronicles the historical evolution of mosques in Ilorin, investigates their structural developments and examines their functions and challenges within the context of socio-economic, political and religious perspectives. The paper finds, among others, that appointment of imam has become hereditary rather than eligibility on the basis of merit. In view of this, the paper suggests consideration of merit in the appointment of Imam of mosques. This will ensure Islamic activities in the Ilorin Emirate are commensurate with modern Islamic trends
Sights and Sounds of Northern Nigeria in AbdulRasheed Na’Allah’s Poetry
The pact between the artist and his community is underscored by the relevance of art to society. The artist plays a vital role in the community’s growth and development in some ways: he represents his community through the artistic mode; he helps in preserving cultural values by rescuing such from extinction or degeneration and these values are transferred from generation to generation. In essence, Literature depicts man and his environment and it is the conscience of society. The diversity of culture which defines the heterogeneous composition of the Northern Nigeria is artistically captured in these collections. Apart from the sociological imperative of the poet’s songs, there is also a touch of humanism as a philosophical guide. It is submitted that from style and language, these collections interrogate dynamics of cultures, attitudes and entertainment of many tribes and ethnic groups inhabiting the northern hemisphere of Nigeria, the most populous black nation in Africa

In Search of Good Governance in Nigeria: The Islamic Paradigm
ln 2014, Nigeria lavishly marked her centenary anniversary with fanfare. Notwithstanding the colossal amount spent on it by the Federal Government, there were diverse feelings concerning the historical event. The political class jubilated because at least Nigeria maintained her unity in spite of all odds. To the economists, it was worthless considering the down-turn of the economy and dwindling industrialization. To the blites, the flamboyant ceremony was meaningless because not much infrastructural or technological development was accomplished given the long age of the country; while to the common man it was a sheer waste of fund where poverty rate is outrageous. Apparently, the bane of the low development in Nigeria lies on purportedly bad governance of various administrations in the country over the years. Hence, the purpose of this study is to search for principles of good governance. Findings in the study revealed that there is a wide gap between what obtains of governance in Nigeria compare to the tenets of Islam on stewardship. Therefore, considering Islam as a comprehensive code of conduct and a complete way of life, the paper examines its provisions on governance with a view to exploiting such as paradigm for good governance in Nigeria. Although, several related works are in existence on this subject; it is obvious that the problem of governance in Nigeria is yet to be resolved. Consequently, the unceasing clamour for change in the Nigeria political landscape explains the need for the present study with a view to chart a new course. The study adopts historical and analytical methods. The paper concludes with recommendations that political leaders should see stewardship as a trust and both the leaders and the followers should develop new (Islamic) political orientation and always uphold the rule of law in order to inject sanity into governance

A Discussion of the Features of Qurtubi’s Al-Jami\u27u li ‘Ahkami ’l-Qur’an
Qur\u27anic exegesis, otherwise known in Arabic terminology as Tafsir, is an integral intellectual strive necessary for the study and understanding the messages of the Qur\u27an. The Prophet was the pioneer exegete obliged by the Divine commandment to explain the contents of the Qur\u27an to the entire mankind. The paper examines the contributions of Qurtubi\u27s work to the exegetical knowledge and its characteristics in the subsequent generations after the demise of the Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W). His work is with particular emphasis on the Tafsiru-l-Ma’thur: explanation of the Qur’an by the Qur\u27an itself, Hadith of the Prophet (SAW), statements of the companions of the Prophet and their followers after them. His work on Tafsir: Al-Jamiu-li-Ahkamil-Qur’an is a codification of legal verses of the Qur\u27an. The paper intends to explicate the salient attributes of Qurtubi\u27s work and its relevance to the contemporary exegetical challenges in the Muslim world. This paper therefore adopts illustrative and exegetical approaches to examine the characteristic features of Qurbi\u27s legal exposition in his Tafsir work. Thus, it concludes that Tafsir literature could be incorporated into various academic institutions of learning
