The editorial board of Ariadne agreed unanimously to dedicate Volume 18 to the memory of Anna Missiou, our colleague who passed away, untimely, on 18 May 2011. Her death came soon after her retirement, upon completion of two decades of a devoted and substantial high-standard contribution to teaching Ancient History and to the overall activities –scholarly, social, and other– of the Department of History and Archaeology and the whole academic community at the University of Crete. We also agreed to include at the beginning of this volume a special Section dedicated to Anna Missiou, comprising: a short curriculum vitae with a list of her publications, and a note on her library and archives which were off ered by her sons to the University; the Announcement of the Dean of the School of Philosophy on her demise, and two contributions relevant to her life and career from the Day Conference which the School organised in her memory on 4 April 2012, nearly a year aft er her death; and, fi nally, a contribution from one of Anna’s students, who is pursuing a most promising academic career
The natural history of civilization in Scottish Enlightenment
SCOTTISH Conjectural Histories represented an important genre of historical writing in Britain during the 18th century. The expression ‘conjectural history’ was coined by Dugald Stewart. Unlike other uses of conjecture to complete philosophical history, in the Scottish histories conjecture means naturalistic explanation rather than theological speculation. Most importantly, natural is referring to the gradual, ‘by stages’ transition from savagery to civilisation, pace the abrupt transition from the state of nature to the civil society in the social contract narratives of civil society. This typical transition traditionally depicted in the four stages schemes – nations of hunters-gatherers, shepherds, farmers and commercial-minded people – is supposedly followed by all mankind notwithstanding unusual environmental factors that can prevent it from occurring. Conjectural narratives also involve systematical speculation that dismisses the miraculous and the extraordinary in order to set up holistic forms of interdependence between institutions and practices as an explanatory frame in a given society of a period. Therefore the notion of progress is considered less as a triumphal march of the European civilisation and more through fi ne-grained theoretical tools, especially as it applies to the civilizing process of the internal ‘savage’ of Scottish Highlands.SCOTTISH Conjectural Histories represented an important genre of historical writing in Britain during the 18th century. Foreword / Εισαγωγή του αφιερώματος: Support from Greek researchers for a Science of Human Nature alive in relationships, from birth
The invitation from Theano Kokkinaki for an introduction to a celebration of work in Greece on the developmental psychology of infants gives me great pleasure. I was asked to recall studies that have, since the 1970s, changed scientific appreciation of infants’ self-aware cleverness and their powers for sharing their interests playfully. I was also asked to respond to the articles for the Journal. All the contributors work together to keep alive this natural science view of what being human is like for us before we are able to talk about it
Professional socialization is a process that extends beyond the educational period and the stage of preparation for choosing a profession (socialization for profession) and involves the entire professional career of a person (socialization in profession). In the case of the school teachers, socialization for profession begins while studying at the University. On the other hand, socialization in profession begins when a person starts teaching at school. This is the moment when one transitions from the anonymity of the student status to a position of responsibility, and more specifically to a position that is controlled not only by the school management but also by the state, the family and the society. This is a role that newly appointed teachers are very little prepared for. This often results in changing the perception they had as students about their future role and mission. Another important factor for this change is the conditions in the workplace and especially the “work culture”.In the case of Greek teachers, the present study shows that there is a significant difference between teachers and students (studying in teacher education departments) with regard to their perceptions on several aspects on the role of the teaching professional
This paper presents a model of school-based teachers’ training. The Learning by Design (Learning by Design) was implemented during 2013-2014 at the 17th Elementary School of Nikaia, Greece with the participation of seven teachers. The pilot implementation of Learning by Design aimed to enable teachers to develop learning scenarios through collaborative professional learning. Teachers acted as curriculum designers developing learning scenarios based on the national curriculum specifications and their school needs. They also utilized social media for learning and their students’ knowledge and cultural experience. The design emphasis was on the improvement of student performance with measurable results through the ‘weaving’ of knowledge processes and on reflexive documentation and redesign of learning scenarios. It became obvious that the involvement of teachers in peer learning groups ensured effective collaborative learning and diversification of teaching in terms of planning, educational choices and outcomes

The Greek-French Friendship Association involving students of the Department of Early Childhood Education at the Democritus University of Thrace, choosing French as a foreign language, created the “Awakening the French language and culture” project. In the context of this project, a specific double pedagogical project (PP) is organized every year: the PP1, with the aim to achieve a dynamic approach to the specialized domain language, based on active learning and action (production of educational materials and encouragement through workshops). Additionally, the PP2, has the aim to involve children of age 5-11 in the French language and culture through playful and creative activities. Evaluation of PP1 was performed, with a closed questionnaire based in a previous “open” one. Students showed interest and satisfaction from their participation in the project (9.03) and developed accountability (9.28), collaboration (8.78), linguistic and methodological skills (7.39 and 7.67 correspondingly). Despite all the difficulties pointed out, they have also shown considerable interest in the continuation of the program. The Greek-French Friendship Association involving students of the Department of Early Childhood Education at the Democritus University of Thrace, choosing French as a foreign language, created the “Awakening the French language and culture” project.
Approaches to the Hermeneutics of Literature: Gadamer and Ricoeur
IN THIS ESSAY, I distinguish between three levels of reading Gadamer’s and Ricoeur’s hermeneutics of literature. First, terms such as ‘dialogue’, ‘tradition’ and ‘mimesis’ occupy a prominent position in the relevant texts of the two philosophers. As a result, hermeneutics is often presented as a reactionary theory that endorses a simplifying construal of the above concepts. Certain critics reject Gadamer’s and Ricoeur’s writings a little hastily, arguing, for instance, that Gadamer regards the tradition as some ineluctable authority.Second, I emphasize the radical elements of Gadamer’s and Ricoeur’s hermeneutics. A cautious study could show that Gadamer, by extricating poetry from the hegemony of a stable exterior point of reference, defends the idea of poetic self-referentiality and semantic indeterminability, hence his interest in Celan’s hermetic lyrics. Similarly, a serious interpretation of Ricoeur could conclude that his concepts of ‘world’ and ‘reference’ do not coincide with the author’s socio-psycho-biography or any state of affairs pre-existing the literary text. Hermeneutics is a multi-faceted and complex approach that recognizes a series of elements of alterity inherent in the process of writing and reading literature. Finally, a specific objection to the otherwise intricate and innovative hermeneutics of Gadamer and Ricoeur is that all the instances of non-presence the two philosophers admit to are interpreted as negative elements that could be sublated during the later phase of reading. Such negativity entails that the salience of those elements is underplayed, andthe radical singularity and autonomy of the text is not taken very seriously. One can claim that those allegedly negative elements are not merely negative but constitute, rather, the positive conditions of possibility which alone can give rise to an authentic work of literature and to a responsible act of reading worthy of its name.IN THIS ESSAY, I distinguish between three levels of reading Gadamer’s and Ricoeur’s hermeneutics of literature.
