Imperialism, Ethics and the Popularization of Medical Theory in Later Fifth-Century Athens: Airs, Waters, Places
The body of the hero: death and heroization in Sophocles’ Oedipus at Colonus and Plato’s Phaedo
OEDIPUS at Colonus, Sophocles’ last tragedy produced after his death in 401 bc by his grandson, is a remarkable play. In his last play, Sophocles restores his most famous hero, the terrifying and miserable Oedipus, a polluted (miaros) man par excellence. The tortured old man now finds a peaceful death at Sophocles’ own home deme of Colonus at Athens. The play, which presents Oedipus’ last day alive, also stages the extraordinary process of his transformation from being a helpless and blind, old beggar to a powerful cult hero.Almost two years after the play’s production in Athens, in 399 bc, Socrates, another famous historical figure, finds his own heroic death at the prison of Athens. In his dialogue Phaedo, Plato undertakes a task similar to that of Sophocles: he tries to restore the fame of the unjustly accused Socrates, and in doing so he portrays him as ascending to a truly heroic status. In this paper I bring together the remarkable deaths of these two seminal figures, the mythical Oedipus and Socrates, and I seek to unearth possible affinities between the two heroizations. I will focus, in particular, on the central role of the physical bodies as a source of pollution (miasma) and seek to explain the way in which both Sophocles and Plato create glorious heroes out of hideous and polluted bodies.OEDIPUS at Colonus, Sophocles’ last tragedy produced after his death in 401 bc by his grandson, is a remarkable play. Second Chance Schools: educational innovations and school culture
The current study investigates the conditions of establishment and development of Second Chance Schools (SCS) in Greece, which are considered as educational structures for adults coping with educational exclusion. Analysis of the institutional framework of the SCS is firstly conducted with respect to the attempts made to adapt their function to that of secondary education reference schools. The innovative features of SCS are also investigated, mainly on the basis of the Ministerial Decision issued in 2003, in an attempt to reveal the culture of these schools, as it was formulated in practice by their stakeholders, i.e.: the principals and the teachers. Finally, the study explores the extent to which both innovation characteristics and culture are reproduced in the institutionalized context of SCS. In conclusion, the current investigation provides significant observations on the negative effects of the institutional changes that took place in the SCS and the implications on their function that steadily tends to become similar with the secondary education reference schools. The current study investigates the conditions of establishment and development of Second Chance Schools (SCS) in Greece, which are considered as educational structures for adults coping with educational exclusion. Divisive or objective the law about choosing the principals of the school units (4327/2015)? Study case in prefecture of Thessaloniki
The current article moves in two basic thematic pivots: a) the nature and the characteristics of the collision as a specialized phenomenon as part of the school unit of the secondary education and b) the collisions that came up in the school units of the secondary education due to the introduction of the procedure of choosing the principals from the teachers’ board of the school unit. The theoretical substantiation of the two pivots was carried out with the assistance of bibliography and the article writing from the Greek and foreign reality. The survey of the second part of the article was limited in the study of the desiderata in schools of Thessaloniki (study of the Case)The current article moves in two basic thematic pivots: a) the nature and the characteristics of the collision as a specialized phenomenon as part of the school unit of the secondary education and b) the collisions that came up in the school units of the secondary education due to the introduction of the procedure of choosing the principals from the teachers’ board of the school unit.
The current study examined the relationships among the dimensions of romantic attachment and identity formation. The sample consisted of 237 undergraduate and postgraduate university students from five Greek universities, aged 18-25. The following measures were administered: Close Experiences in Relationships – Revised (ECR-R), Dimensions of Identity Development Scale (DIDS), a demographics questionnaire. Attachment anxiety and avoidance were positively associated with ruminative identity exploration and negatively with the identity commitment dimensions. However, the attachment dimensions were not related with the adaptive dimensions of identity exploration as hypothesized. Gender effect was insignificant. The current study examined the relationships among the dimensions of romantic attachment and identity formation.
